Hated Grand Budapest? What? ;-)

Well actually it is a 2014 release. It only played at festivals in 2013.

It is playing at the Music Box Theater right now in Chicago, so I would assume that it is, at very least, playing somewhere in NYC and in L.A. Last night I watched Elena, by the same director. It was alright. Similar in tone to his masterpiece, The Return, but with the results being not quite as impressive.

No fault of the film, but I don’t think I’ve come upon another film to which the word “noir” has been applied so terribly wrong. A plot point is “noir”-ish, but nothing outside of this film is even remotely “noir.”

RIP Anita Ekberg yesterday, you couldn't have La Dolce Vita without her...

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/...bol-dies-at-83

On the Golden Globes was good to see indie films get tons of wins. birdman, Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood etc. Just damnit Jessica Chastain better win a Oscar this year imo she's on a future path to being a great american actress.

She's already there, if you ask me. Can't wait to see A Most Violent Year.

Agreed. She doesn't need an award for validation. O'Toole never won anything from the academy.

A strong year of performances, although IMO none of those I've seen are all-time great performances.

Hardy was incredible in Locke. I'm still in awe with how effective it was. Although more mainstream, he was also excellent in The Drop last year.

While I like Jennifer Lawrence, I still think Chastain should've won for Zero Dark Thirty. A lot of great younger talent right now, both male and female.

To make this Criterion-related, are there any films from last night you all think will end up in the CC? Grand Budapest and Boyhood aside, I don't think so. Maybe Leviathan?

I really liked Tom Hardy in the few films I’ve seen him in. The Drop is on my radar – hopefully, I’ll be able to get it at a Red Box later this month. I’ve never heard of Locke, so thanks for mentioning it guys! I’ll look into it.

It's amazing how history was made last night.

Wes Anderson never won a Golden Globe or Oscar yet. But now he has for Grand Budapest Hotel. At least for a Golden Globe award in the best motion picture / comedy or musical category.

Richard Linklater never won a Golden Globe or Oscar yet either until last night when his film Boyhood won 3 Golden Globes for best supporting actress, best director and best motion picture / drama category.

These are 2 of my favorite younger directors working today and its thrilling to see their latest films are also probably their best films to date.

I'm not big on comparing actors of different generations, but for me Hardy is the closest out there to young Brando. His performance and character in The Drop I think are analogous to Brando in On the Waterfront (not saying his performance is as good as that one, mind you, just similar).

For sure. Many of you know my distaste for Anderson, but it is great to see two very popular directors finally win.

I wouldn't mind if Leviathan got the treatment, but I think if they're going to bring in Zvyagintsev, it needs to be The Return. That's his best film, if you ask me, and is just criminally underseen.

Either way, I do not place a lot of stock in these award shows anymore.

My personal top five of 2014...

1. Under the Skin (I know that it's technically a 2013 film, but still...)
2. Cold in July
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
5. A Most Wanted Man
I've been in a critics circle for a number of years now and even I don't much care for awards shows either, esp. not when such obvious bait (The Imitation Game, Theory Of Everything) is involved. At first it was exciting to be sent screener discs and other assorted paraphernalia, but I've grown tired of it in recent years. I actually review only a handful of contemporary releases these days, instead preferring to focus on older fare.

That being said, I was quite surprised to see two excellent films recognised in the top categories last night. Boyhood is really impressive, and while it didn't make my own top ten of last year I am looking forward to revisiting it. Grand Budapest Hotel was my favourite American film of the year.

My top ten of 2014 for reference.

1. Adieu au langage 3D (Jean-Luc Godard, FRA)
2. P’tit Quinquin (Bruno Dumont, FRA)
3. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson, US)
4. Bastards (Claire Denis, FRA)
5. Listen Up Philip (Alex Ross Perry, US)
6. Horse Money (Pedro Costa, POR)
7. School Of Babel (Julie Bertucelli, FRA)
8. Maps To The Stars (David Cronenberg, CAN/US)
9. Guardians Of The Galaxy (James Gunn, US)
10. Welcome To New York (Abel Ferrara, FRA/US)

At the time of compiling my list Inherent Vice, Foxcatcher and A Most Violent Year had yet to be released in the UK, while I missed Jealousy.

How often does Criterion preserve the original logos on the films (e.g. United Artists, World-Northal, etc.)? And does the Blu-ray of Quadrophenia keep its World-Northal logo?

While this are two of my favorite directors too, and while i liked both movies and i am happy for them, i feel like they both have done much better films (Rushmore, Royal tenenbaums, any of the Before trilogy), but i am not sure if they just won because there wasn't much competition, or if when they made their finest films there was too much competition for them to be nominated.

Don't know, i guess for me it feels a bit like when Scorsese won for The Departed, although he of course had much more years of snubs, and at least was nominated many times.

The Return is one of my top three favorite films of the 2000s, along with The Lives of Others and Werckmeister Harmonies.

I agree, under seen for sure. Wonderful film and deceptively complex.

Heh, just noticed it's in your top favorite films. Have you seen Elena? That one lingers in similar ways. Leviathan is feels more broad than any of his other films, which is why I don't think I can rank it higher than The Return, much as I like it.

I'm seeing that the MoC edition of Two For the Road is releasing very soon. I sure hope that the Criterion clue was indeed for this film. Titles like this make my "Region A only" stance harder and harder to maintain.
