I find Steven Soderbergh a strange director, I have a huge love/hate relationship with his films. He can make some really 'hollywood' films and then he can make some incredible cinema. I guess he does it to help fund those bigger films from him, but I find it a bit odd. I guess he is very similar to Guillermo del Toro, I cant wait to check out Crimson Peak, and that other little tim he was doing - he needs to make more films that are same level as The Devils Backbone and Pans Labyrinth - they are so personal and heart breaking.

I love that Lars Von Trier funds his film through his Porn company haha, so fitting.

I did love Contagion however, I thought it was incredible and so terrifying. Personally I found it very realistic and it felt like something that could really happen, unlike these other films about diseases' and viruses taking over. It also had some phenomenal performances that came across as so honest and genuine. Also my god he stuck some big twists and turns into it that I did not expect at all.

Definitely recommend that film - although ti has a very odd soundtrack (that fits so well with the film!).

I still need to check out Greys Anatomy - would you guys recommend this?

Im pretty sure there was but can't think off the top of my head! Although I never knew that MoC's release of The Ballad of Narayama is the remake of the one in the Criterion collection, so can't wait to check that out.

This doesn't count, but La Cage Aux Folles does have a remake, which is so bad haha, thankfully that is not in the collection!

Without getting into the "what is a remake" discussion, I think "The Lower Depths" fits what you are asking.

As do some Ozu films, but I don't know if both films being made by the same director would be different than what you were thinking.

Although I can't wait for the remake of I Saw The Devil, The NEW Ring remake, Loved the Oldboy remake... of course I am kidding. Although I have seen a lot of the 'Hollywood' remakes of asian films and by god they butcher them.

Perfect example I would say is watch 'A Tale of Two Sisters' and then watch the remake 'The Uninvited'.

I loved Soderbergh's Solaris. I found it to be an exceptional film and would love it see it arrive on Blu-ray. A release from Criterion would be most welcome.

On the flip-side, I haven't been able to finish the original version of Solaris. I found it to be over-my-head somewhat and didn't know what was going on while watching it. I also didn't like that there were so many long, drawn-out shots of things like walking and driving without much of anything else going on. I do feel I should give it another shot eventually (and maybe hear the commentary) but it was leaving me cold compared to the remake. (I'm also sure that I am in the minority on this one as a lot of viewers have written off the Soderbergh version and hail the original as being on par with 2001: A Space Odyssey, though for me the latter worked so much better and is actually one of my favorite science fiction films).

well they have to make them easier to understand , maybe at a sequence that explains everythign at the end for the people that had to much trouble keeping their attention up for 90+ minutes..

i love how these korean movies sometimes have a runtime of 140min , got multiple story twists and you cant just play around with your smarthphone every other minute and still follow the plot..

pretty sure a movie like "A Muse"

He put most those scenes (in particular the long car scene) in so people who got bored easily would leave the cinema apparently, he wanted people who could focus to watch and not get distracted.

Not sure how I feel about it though, in a way its quite funny. But there are many people who have a lot of patience and watch many films that require attention that may not like Solaris, so in a way it doesn't really work lol.

(this isn't an insult post or a dig!) just sharing a fact haha - I guess sometimes when done too much it can be tedious! Don't watch Gerry though haha, its a beautiful film but my god.... it can be a tad slow, and I have a lot of patience with film!

I get that, but isn't part of the fun of these films is creating the answers your self, or coming up with your own theories and personal ideas about the film - I love that because it can stay with you longer and makes the film more personal.

It's a shame people struggle eight the originals, but I won't judge as some do struggle, but its a HUGE shame.

I'd love to see 'Hollywoods' remake of 'Visitor Q' (Criterion, if you are listening, give us some Takashi Miike!)

I am overjoyed right now.

My "Used - Very Good" Criterion Blu-ray of The Man Who Fell to Earth that I bought for $80 and change arrived in the mail today, and the package is actually in perfect condition.

The digipak, booklet, inner case, and disc all look as though they were just unwrapped at a store. I still followed the same procedure that I did with The Third Man by putting the disc and the booklet in one of my empty plastic Criterion single-disc cases and putting the digipak in a safe spot, but I'm still happy that everything looks great.

I'm looking forward to revisiting the movie this weekend, and seeing it in high definition.


Incidentally, my Kino Lorber Blu-ray of The Falcon and the Snowman (with the Bowie song, "This Is Not America") arrived in the mail today as well, so I received two Bowie-related titles on the same day.

The Criterion DVD release of Douglas Sirk's 1954 remake of Magnificent Obsession also includes John M. Stahl's 1935 original. Now that's yet another title I would love to see upgraded to blu-ray!

It's not really comparable to anything Criterion have released from him, in terms of the content of the film, but quality wise it's top-tier Godard. Have you seen either of the Cohen Godard Blu-rays? It's closer in tone to those films than the 1960s films. With all this said it's an accessible movie, and was one of his biggest successes at the box-office.

I didn't love Solaris (2002). In fact, I really don't even remember all that much about it.

But I would love to see it released as well because I'd love to give it another look.
