speaking of TSS, Adam, I finally sat down with Une Femme Mariee. I liked it. much of what I have come to expect from Godard… enough there for multiple viewings. And the booklet for the MoC release is like 100 pages!! I skimmed through it and saw that JLG references the Truffaut film in his movie. Let's not talk about, though, because I haven't seen The Soft Skin , so the references went over my head. happy with Une Femme Mariee, though.

So my haul for the imminent flash sale will be Hausu, My Winnipeg, Tokyo Drifter, and Walkabout.

I'm not sure what my relationship with François Truffaut is.

The first film I saw by him was The 400 Blows and since then I have seen Jules and Jim, The Last Metro, and just last week, The Soft Skin.

They're all quite good films, but none of the latter three floored me in quite the same way that his debut did. Maybe part of my criticism for them is because I am expecting the experience I had with The 400 Blows, but I get something milder or darker. Maybe, too, I'm just not invested in any of his characters outside of Doinel. I really don't know.

You might lose your investment in Doinel by seeing Masculin Feminin, Day for Night and Made in U.S.A.

OR...

Scottie can double down by revisiting Pierrot Le Fou and spotting his cameo and saying to himself "oh cool! Jean Pierre Leaud!" (or admittedly, like I did: "the kid from The 400 Blows!"

then spot his very funny cameo in Godard's Weekend.. after that, one can be sure that those busting on his acting chops are all just haters.

If you plan to take advantage of the twice yearly 50% sale then don't forget the "loyalty points" you earn with Criterion direct.

So far my favourite Truffaut is Shoot the Piano Player.
Probably need to rewatch The 400 Blows and catch some of his other well-known films, but Shoot the Piano Player is just soooooo good. Jules and Jim is a great film, but I thought that his style, as fun as it was, ultimately kept me at a distance from the central relationship.

I'm pleased to hear that. The relationship between The Soft Skin and Une Femme Marieé is fascinating. The latter is basically Godard's response to the former. I find it amazing that the whole project was conceived of and premiered within three months.

I adore Une Femme Marieé, and I love The Soft Skin too.

In fairness not many films can stand up next to The 400 Blows! It ain't just a problem with Truffaut's other movies! That being said, I think The Soft Skin and Stolen Kisses come near.

Weekend is a film full of amazing cameos. Jean Eustache is in there!

OK, after 3 weeks, I got to ask...

Why all the guesses about the Criterion Flash Sale?

As an owner of 70+ Criterion Blu-ray & DVD I've taken advantage of the sale many times over the last few years as well as the B&N twice annual sale but it seems like the Flash Sale idea has been torturous lately. LOL

So if this sale is really happening tomorrow I've decided I'll be getting three titles. I narrowed it down to:

Sword of Doom
The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant
Every Man for Himself/The Soft Skin

Can't decide on the last one. Should I go Godard or Truffaut?

So I am thinking about picking up
Repulsion
Picnic at Hanging Rock
The Music Room

My questions though, is how would everyone rate the rewatchability of these and how are the transfers (mainly for PaHR & TMR since they're on Hulu Plus)
Also is merchandise included in the flash sale, I really want a T-Shirt
Thanks everyone

Maybe try turning the booklet around so the spine faces the center of the case? That way the little flanges don't catch the edges of the pages.
That's exactly what i did. Don't know if that will help with the top and bottom though.

I just make sure that when I get out a disc or the booklet to line it up correctly before closing it back up. That doesn't cure the ones that are damaged at the factory but it makes sure the ones I have aren't getting chewed up as well.
That's the thing. They don't come damaged like that. It's damaged from normally moving around the case and opening and closing it. Like you said, i'm going to have to start carefully lining the booklet up before i close the case.

Really weird.

Awesome, Thanks for the help. Every sale I've had this one in my hand and alway talked myself out of it. Why? I have no idea because I clearly want it lol, so it looks like I will definitely purchase it.
