I love the BBS set but it's a pretty hefty price tag if you only really want The Last Picture Show or Easy Rider.

It's all to make money for those niche Chinese and Korean films that are coming any day now.

He was just using Raise the Red Lantern as an example but there are many, many, many films that I will believe Criterion could secure the rights to if they wanted which would serve his point.

I'm in for Fisher King. Bridge and Valerie pique my interest.

Criticizing Criterion at all in this thread is a fool's errand, it would seem.
It's not that. It's the sense that "just 1 of 2 more titles from literally any other Asian country besides Japan" won't be enough. Besides, you should know by now that they will be releasing Ray's Apu Trilogy late this year. That's three more Asian titles not from Japan, which is more than you asked for.

Or am I taking you too literally again?

It is interesting for people without any of them, i really liked Vanya on 42nd Street, but don't feel like paying that much since doesn't have much extras, the set makes it a bit more economical, but i haven't seen the other 2 yet.

So people who only want Five Easy Pieces don't have to buy the whole box set?

I am really flabbergasted by not only the box set and separate releases, but the re-release of Five Easy Pieces...

Couldn't tell you. I really, really, really liked the extras (no counting the commentaries: I'm sure they're great too but I'm just not inclined to listen to them in general) on all the BBS discs but I can't remember what specifically was on the Easy Rider disc.

It looks like they're basically knocking twenty bucks off the SRP if you buy all three of them. They did pretty much the same thing when they put Yojimbo and Sanjuro in a slipcase and called it a set.

And what about all of the other box sets? I know a lot of people only like one or two films in certain sets (see: David Lean Directs Noel Coward). I mean could really give a hoot less about any of the films in the America set, but I would gladly purchase The Last Picture Show.

My point is to release the films in the box set and not re-release them separately. Waste of a release tbh.

The box set is a much better value too if you're planning to get all three

I'm so happy about Valerie and Her Week of Wonders! It's a great little film and it really deserves to be seen.

I'm happy that I finally get to own Five Easy Pieces, mainly because I wasn't going to shell out the cash for the rest of the films in the set that I didn't particularly care for.

The Criterion adds a second commentary track by Peter Fonda, and Paul Lewis.

I LOVE Easy Rider, since it's release in 1969, but even I only listened the one time, then sold the BBS box, and have never felt inclined to buy a standalone from say, an eBay seller ( even though I've seen some very affordable copies there).

Really cool releases for June! I'm super pleased to see My Dinner with Andre receive a blu-ray upgrade, although I'm not sure if that was a title that really needed an upgrade compared to some others. I'm a fan of Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory so I'll be curious about the Demme film: A Master Builder. I'm really psyched about The Fisher King the most as its one of my favorite Gilliam films. I'm curious if Criterion meant to have a new video interview with Robin Williams but missed out because of his untimely death last year. I don't quite understand why Five Easy Pieces has received a separate release since its already in high quality blu-ray in the BBS box set. The Bridge looks interesting since its the first postwar anti-war film to come out of Germany. I have no clue about the Czech film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders but might watch it someday.

You're right, it's not enough, but it's a start. I still don't understand what would be so bad about them expanding their focus for awhile? Is your concern that we wouldn't be getting as many Japanese films, were this to hypothetically happen?

Good on them for releasing the Apu Trilogy later this year. He must be another significant seller for them, considering the number of releases his films have received on Criterion and Eclipse.

Oh, I completely understand it, but where is this coming from and what's happening in the future?

Are they going to re-release every Tati film now in a separate release? Every Demy film? Every BBS? Every Zatoichi?

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders looks interesting (although it is weird the blu ray doesn't have a preorder button and price, and the amazon link goes to nowhere), and the cover is awesome, also very interested in the Wallace set.

It doesn't seem like the standalone release of Five Easy Pieces took the place of a regular upgrade or new release so i am not complaining.
