I had a little time last night so I popped in a short, English-speaking film that wouldn't drive my wife nuts while she graded papers. Watched The Palm Beach Story and liked it, but not nearly as much as Sullivan's Travels. I'm sure the film was somewhat shocking for the time in its depiction of marriage and Claudette Colbert open discussion of her sex appeal.
It was also fun watching the supplement with Bill Hader and listening to him rave on Sturges. I would like to see more Criterion videos from him in the future. He seems very dialed in on Criterion with this, the vault video and his Documentary Now! show. My Moonrise Kingdom pre-order should arrive at any time today. Can't wait to get a new digipack in my hands. |

This may speak to my feelings about Wes Anderson, but I'm more interested in the packaging of Moonrise Kingdom than the film, but I'm going in with an open mind. |

Have to disagree with Dr. Svet's assessment of Moonrise Kingdom. Fantastic film, like all of Anderson's work. Can't wait to add this disc to my collection.

While I disagree too since I think Moonrise Kingdom is one of his best, I do think that what he mentions applies to The Grand Budapest Hotel, also not a fan of Bottle Rocket and Darjeeling Limited, but they are ok.

I think this is the place most likely to get an answer, so here it goes.
This weekend I watched a film called Going Places by Bertrand Blier, a director I had never heard of before, it was a fantastic mixture of comedy, crime and even some humanity in the weirdest of places, I recommend everyone with Netflix to watch it before it expires on October 1st, although be warned that the movie is misogynistic, politically incorrect and tends to show a lot of nudity, both men but more women ![]() Anyway I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this French director, and wondered if you guys have some recommendations of other of his works, it appears this movie I mention was released by Kino, but there really isn't much talk about it that I could find. Sorry JW007, I didn't see your message. Here is my reply:

I don't recall Mister Johnson getting rave reviews here. I was pretty young when it came out so I could be wrong, but I don't ever hear critics or film buffs talking about that film when Beresford's name is mentioned. |

The managers at my store are trying to figure out how exactly the 20% off for members will work with our bestsellers (which are already 30% off for non-members, and 40% off with the membership). While I'd love for there to be 50% off for hardcover bestsellers, that seems highly unlikely. But, since Moonrise Kingdom probably won't be discounted anyway, it should just be 20% off. |

Hey other Los Angeles area folk -- UCLA Film Archive is screening several CC classics over the next few weeks, including:
Oct 02 - The Red Shoes (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...ry-celebration) Oct 03 - Gilda (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...ry-celebration) Oct 16 - Night of the Hunter (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...hunter-macbeth) Oct 19 - My Darling Clementine (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...-yellow-ribbon) Never been but I can't NOT see Gilda in theaters. Anyone else been to the UCLA Film Archive? Yay / nay? When I was a student at UC Berkeley, I went to their film archives pretty often and really loved it. |

<----- Big fan of Buffet Froid. I've seen Going Places and I think Get Out Your Handkerchiefs. However, it was 15+ years ago so I can't really remember anything. May have seen some others. I think I found him a little disappointing because I loved Buffet Froid and wanted his other films to be great but, to my recollection, were more of a mixed bag. I'd like to revisit them though. I'm sure Pro-B has probably seen most of them and can give a better assessment. Last edited by buffetfroid; 09-22-2015 at 07:05 PM. |
