Thanks for that - I plan to pick it up in the B&N 40% off sale this month. Even though I was too old to grow up with Pokémon et al I still think it's something I will enjoy.

In other news, I looked at my stats and they seem to be pretty much spot on!
  • Strongly overrepresented: Film-Noir, Foreign, Imaginary, Surreal
  • Overrepresented: Coming of age, Dark humor, Family, Musical
  • Underrepresented: Action, Horror, Nature, Sport
  • Strongly underrepresented: Other

I expect Jellyfish Eyes hits at least two of my over-represented categories

I accidentally left off Speedy from my 20% off pre-buy thru Criterion.com. When I emailed them I got a response from "Claire". Just like Mr. Mulvaney she is the only person I ever get a response from with Criterion's customer service.
Is this a real person or another Paul Bunyan of Criterion?

They did work with me to waive shipping on this order and include the addition of Speedy and a House t-shirt with my December 30th shipping. What a nice company to take all of my money and make me feel wonderful about it.

I have emailed Mulvaney a bunch of times the past 3 weeks and have not heard back once. I used to hear back usually the same day for any inquiry I had, but this time, nothing.

Is anyone else experiencing this with his email?

Jon Mulvaney doesn't use email. He's a wave existence. His energy in the universe ebbs and flows. When the time is right you'll get a response from an intern inspired by the spirit of Mulvaney.

Oh I meant John Travolta! I realize now my post was unclear, just edited. Brian de Palma's the man.

Everyone needs to see this at least once.

And it needs an upgrade.
This is indeed a mesmerizing film with a powerful ending that hits all the right notes at the right time imo. Ranks with the best Slovakian films I've ever seen. In fact, it's probably somehwere in my short list for favourite Criterion discs, as I 'discovered' it through their release. I would buy an upgrade of it immediately.

I saw The Wages of Fear for the first time last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has me tense the entire time (which probably wasn't a good idea to watch as I was going to bed, haha).

I knew this title was in the collection, but there have been waves of applause here recently for this title. I don't recall hearing anything about an upgrade so I'll put the DVD on my shortlist for upcoming buys.

I haven't seen The Music Room yet or the Eclipse set of Ray's later films. I've seen six Ray films and so far he's six for six. The guy has never let me down.
Yes, go with The Big City... CinemaBlu is right - it comes with a second film that is pound for pound (at 69 minutes or so) nearly as good as the main feature.

speaking of endings, I happen to LOVE the last scene of The Big City, too. and that isn't any kind of loose spoiler or anything... its just good. it works. the actors, the music, and the dialogue are all just perfect punctuation marks.

Now you should try watching Friedkin's Sorcerer, which is a remake of that film. I've seen both and I like Friedkin's better, but that's IMHO.

I'm personally more fond of The Wages of Fear than The Sorcerer, but that's just me. Both are quite intense.

While I was in South Australia I had to stop by and see this place relevant to the collection:

It was 43 C that day - imagine going about in heavy Victorian clothing in those days, with no AC!

Fantastic field trip!

People back then must have taken a lot of cold baths to cool down in such sweltering heat.

I'll gladly have a picnic there anytime, and will clean up my rubbish.

It's actually already being restored in 4K by the Czech National Film Archive. When (or if) the big C will decide to release it is another story.

So today I went to a Barnes & Noble store to exchange a Criterion Blu-ray that was damaged in the mail. Piece of cake, right? Walk in with my copy, exchange it for a new copy, and walk out with the new copy. And it was within the 14 day return window so they couldn't refuse my exchange. Turns out it wasn't as simple and straightforward as that. The cashier says she won't be able to exchange it for a different one unless I paid the difference because the Criterion 50% sale is over. WTF, she wants me to pay to do a exchange. The movie is back to full price. What kind of policy is that? I just wanted to exchange for another copy. I talked to a manager and he reiterated the same thing. I decided to just get a money back.

If that's truly corporate policy and not just the staff at one store being dunder-headed, then shame on B&N. I don't know of any other store that won't let you exchange a defective item for the same product, even after the sale period is over, as long as you were still in the return window. The only exceptions I've seen were for limited stock or clearance items, but that is clearly not the case here.

They pulled that nonsense with me before. I just went to another B&N.
