I know most already accept the kings to just be for Kings of the Road, but I just realized that the 1927 and 1931 versions of King of Kings is part of the Criterion Collection. So, I still think the clue makes sense for that title in addition to Kings of the Road. The drawing just makes the middle king stand out more than the others, implying he's the king of kings. It just has that Criterion pun feeling to it in my opinion .

I watched Yi Yi for the third time last night...this time with the commentary track just in case there was some crucial piece of thematic/stylistic substance that I was missing on my own.

I had pretty much the same reaction I had the first two viewings.

It's a good film, but I'm not blown away by it.

It feels like one of those films that I'm supposed to love, based on all the glowing reviews it received, but I just don't love it.

Which isn't to say that I would recommend it for a one-off viewing.

...it just wasn't a great choice for me as a blind buy.

This is a long shot but can anybody think of a way to fold, spindle or mutilate the angel clue so that it points toward 1964's other 'unsanctioned nuclear bomber strike on Moscow' movie?

Cause that would be pretty freaking cool.

Oh hey, my mom worked for the screenplay writer (Walter Bernstein) for that movie

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

Pick-up of the day today! Won the OOP Rialto 10 disc set on eBay for $71. The slip isn't in the best condition, but this is by far the best price I've seen on this set. I've seen it go for $250. I have all of the titles except Billy Liar and Murderous Maids.

My watch of the day was Monsieur Verdoux. I enjoyed it, but it is my least favorite Chaplin talkie in the collection. I'd say 8/10. It's like a tame Honeymoon Killers.

How often do Criterions go out of print?

Does it happen every year?

...every two or three years?

It doesn't happen on schedule. It only happens when Criterion loses rights to a film, which happens randomly.

Obviously it doesn't happen on schedule.

But I bet you could look at all the Criterions that have gone out of print over the course of the last ten years and calculate some kind of average.

I would do it myself.

...but I'm not very smart.

That along with Queen of Earth are probably the next ones on my Netflix watchlist, but couldn't decide which to see first, thanks.

I have Beasts of No Nation and Queen of Earth sitting in my queue. They'll both be watched in the near future!
