Criterion already has digital content.

It's called FilmStruck.

This is obviously how they want you to consume their movies digitally, by paying for their service. I'd be shocked if they "cannibalize" that revenue stream by offering free digital copies of their movies with Blu-rays. By not doing that, they get you to pay them twice - once for the disc and again for the streaming service.

What a powerful film that is.

The sheer beauty of the story almost brought me to my knees. If you're looking for an art film that really makes you think, this is one you have to see. To my knowledge, Criterion does not have any Andy Warhol films in the collection.

That needs to be remedied.

I would urge everyone here to send Jon Mulvaney an email about this ASAP.

He'll get the message the next time he checks his email account and sees 20+ emails with the subject line...Blow Job.
I hear it's a tear jerker.

Yep, that is a very bad argument. Using someone's fandom of another director/movie to discount their opinion is pretty low.

Has anyone been successful lately in getting a response from Criterion about discs that won't play? I've emailed them twice since the beginning of December about a replacement Le Cercle Rouge disc, since the one I have won't boot to even the main menu on two different players. All I've gotten is crickets. I know the title is OOP, so even if they can't replace it, a simple "sorry we don't have any more stock" would be fine. But I can't get a response at all.

I have the exact same problem with my copy of "Le Cercle Rouge" and have e-mailed them four or five times in the last couple months. No response.

Hey, sometimes the brain needs a break and a little escapism. That's why I have Weird Al's UHF and that terrible adaptation of Howard the Duck.

I'm wondering if this is even possible...

What if I wanted to digitize my entire Criterion Collection blu-ray library?

Could I actually do this or does each disc have some sort of lock for ripping discs?

Could Criterion send me complimentary digital copies if I sent them proofs of purchase (from receipts I saved over the years)?

I mean, being a loyal customer, I feel it would be unfair if I simply wanted digital copies of all of my films and they told me I'd have to re-buy everything digitally. And that's just counting Criterion. I figured bigger video distribution companies would be impossible to persuade if I just bought their physical media on blu-ray or dvd.

Ya know, let's say I plan on moving overseas or someplace like Hawaii and want to live in a yurt and can't possibly manage to take 6 bins full of blu-rays with me for my relocation...wouldn't it be amazing to have digital copies of my entire film library?

What are my options here? Or do I even have any options at all or am I shit out of luck and now forever punished for buying physical media?
It's very easy to digitise BDs yourself, although it's time consuming and I don't really have much faith in external HDs lasting long providing that's where you end up storing the copies.

When I was ripping/encoding DVDs 7 or 8 years ago, I remember the process taking about 2 hours per disc. I can only imagine what a BD-50 would take.

It's not far off two hours if I remember correctly. Not done it for a while, though.

True, True. I've to add Tammy to the list.

.. Don't know what was it that I found interesting - Melissa McCarthy being unusually obnoxious or the crazy grandma.

With the recent demise of both George Michael and Carrie Fisher , 2016 has been a rough year for notable deaths.

I'm sure if you check the obit listings for every year, you'd find there have been many notable deaths annually. It's just that after Bowie and Rickman early in the year y'all have been setting up a database for 2016 so that every time an actor or musician dies you went "AWWW HELLLL TIME TO PILE ANOTHER ONE ONTO THE 2016 LIST!!"

I'm ambivalent about this whole 2016 thing. It was amusing at first but now it sort of reduces these deaths to a statistic.
