Wasn't the whole book a revenge plot against Amy Adams?

No it was showing her that he had moved on but also expressing how hurt he was. showing her that she didn't stand by him and believe in him when she should have. There's a scene where he first writes a book and she doesn't like it and he states that he just wanted wanted her to say she liked it. That's why he sends her the book because her opinion was all that mattered to him and wanted her to believe in him. The book is his way of moving on. Not just a **** you revenge tale.

Well, I didn't pick up on any of that. Probably because of the crippling boredom I was feeling.

Modern western/thrillers aren't for everybody that's for sure

I wouldn't go that far in defining my taste. Just that one was not for me, not in the least.

I can buy that being part of his motivation, but not all of it. How do you explain
[Show spoiler]why he didn't show up at the end? I think that was his real "f--k you" revenge.

You're good it's not for everyone and I expect more people to have the ending really than the movie. By anyways you're not in the minority it's got a 74 percent or something like that on Rotten Tomatoes I just didn't want other people to think it's some simple revenge tale cause it's not it's got layers. All good though

If you guys want to discuss Nocturnal Animals, you should probably at least spoiler the discussion. People who haven't seen it and are trying to avoid discussion about it until they do would have a reasonable expectation that they can read the Criterion thread without stumbling across Nocturnal Animals details.

Yeah.... I'll even buy that
[Show spoiler]the are-you-kidding-me, on-the-nose "an eye for an eye" 'moral' of the novel was a red herring to get her to think he didn't want revenge, because Revenge Is Bad, See, I Wrote a Book About That, to allow it just a little more complexity and make that absurd plot point just a little more excusable, but that is not clearly communicated in the movie if that was Edward's point, due to the too-clever-by-half choice to never show present-day Edward. I did find it interesting how it tried to depict the way we move in an out of absorption in a fictional world and how what we imagine and how it effects us is influenced by our present reality, but ultimately, it needed to set up a much clearer delineation between "imagined" and "real" for that to be truly effective (even if it eventually breaks that distinction down). Making it more apparent that the "novel" was actually and very specifically Amy Adams' character's imagination of the novel she was reading, and making it clear whether the flashback scenes were "third-person omniscient" or specifically her possibly-distorted memories would have strengthened the whole film, I think. But in the end, it's a very pretty movie, at least, Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are fantastic, and I got to watch Jake Gyllenhaal take a shower.
It's a let-down after A Single Man, and now I'm suspicious Ford just got lucky, but I do hope he makes another movie to confirm or disprove that.

I searched for years to find something that would fit around my Marienbad set (the original card one) and last week found the perfect item. Anyone remember snappers? A company made clear plastic cases for them, similar to steelbook protective sleeves, I came across one on a DVD I was getting rid of and lo and behold, it fitted!

[Show spoiler] The reason he doesn't show up at the end could be a couple different reasons. 1. He never intended to go and was just a **** you. 2. He wanted to meet her but couldn't let himself go back to her after all he had been through and had finally overcome it. 3. He wanted to see her one last time and tells her he'll meet her but never intends to go in he just wants to see her. The meaning I took at the end was number 2. And even Jake Gyllenhaal talks about it in his Nerdist podcast interview and the director himself has talked about why he ended it like that.
As far as Tom ford goes most people agree he's 2 for 2. I found this one to be better but I love both films.

Default Year-End Poll

Another reminder that Saturday is the last day to vote in the year end poll.

To make things interesting I've chipped in a $25 gift code for Criterion.com. This is my way of giving back to a thread I've enjoyed reading and posting in for several years. It's gotten me through many days I did not want to be at work!

Anyone that submits a ballot and has been a member prior to December 2016 is eligible to vote. Winner will be selected via my randomizer (OFFSET-RANDBETWEEN formula) in Excel.

The link to the ballot is in my signature. So far I've received ballots from:

Finally getting a chance to catch up on some purchases from the past year. Watched The Kennedy Films yesterday. Quite good, and really interesting after this past election season. I enjoyed Primary and Crisis the most. With Crisis I just sat there thinking, "man, we haven't really come that far in some ways since the 60s." I know we have in many ways, but it was still quite poignant. Anyway, enough politics.

Hoping to finally watch The 400 Blows today, and then one or two noir films. I'm thinking the line up will be Only Angels Have Wings, Asphalt Jungle, and if I have time, Night Train to Munich.

Whoa, you mean to tell me there were two Japanese-centric movies titled "Black Rain" that were released in 1989?!

Yes, and I'm hoping this is the better of the two (though I've seen neither at this point). Apparently the US film has Tomisaburo Wakayama in it though, so who knows?

I've only seen the American film, and it's great. Just captures the 1980's feel really well, and has a nice gritty edge to it, and a solid soundtrack. Will try and seek out the Japanese film, as I've liked most of what I've seen from Imamura.

Visually, being a Ridley Scott movie, Black Rain is also very cool looking. Some scenes in Japan felt very Blade Runner-esque to me. I have this shot as a background pic on my profile page

I wonder if we'll see an upgrade of Early Summer in 2017, completing the Noriko trilogy on BD.
