Has anyone else had trouble reading the subtitles when the shot is mostly bright white? Vivre sa vie at the record store is one off the top of my head. Pierrot le Fou at certain points may be another. Maybe it is a Godard thing?

Not just a Godard thing. Many black and white movies have white subtitles, making them very difficult to read on a white screen. A while back some folks tried to "solve" this problem by using yellow subtitles and/or a black edge on the letters. That's hard to do when the subtitles are on the film itself, as is the case with many old foreign movies.

Kuroneko is the first japanese film I have watched. I had a bit of trouble with the subtitles on that one. I thought it was a pretty good movie overall. I was just wondering if there is any chance for some Eric Rohmer on Blu? Have no idea if there are any new masters but as a big fan I'd love to own a collection of his films on Blu. There is a Studio Kanal box set available with a big chunk of his output but unfortunately DVD only as well.

Aside from the big Potemkine set that you could import...

Rights for many of his films are all over the place in North America. I would assume Criterion could do Six Moral Tales on blu (although the fact that they haven't even though the masters have been out there for years has me wondering), but not sure about the rest.

Film Movement has currently released 2 Rohmers on blu-ray for NA.

Thanks a lot. I'm from Germany living right near the French border. Don't know why but I completely overlooked this beautiful collection. Will probably pick it up on my next trip to France.

I wish one of those smaller sets had Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle because that's the one Rohmer I've seen that I'm over the moon about. :/

I've had a dream once where I broke into the Criterion offices in broad daylight and raided the closet.

Fortunately I didn't have to shoot anyone, but I did have to bash Mulvaney in the face with my AK-47.

He was trying to be a hero and I had to put him down.

I escaped with two large money bags full of titles, had a pretty intense shoot-out with NYPD on Park Ave and fled the country.

...it was glorious.

I agree with both of you. I have a bunch of Criterions I bought a few years ago sitting and gathering dust (esp. a couple of titles from Costa-Gavras and several Antonioni films). I sometimes wonder why I bought these films? Was it because, in order to have a "respectful and serious film library", it was essential that I buy these movies? But for whom? Who am I supposed to impress or gain respect from? I just can't get in the right mood to watch certain movies. I've had Kurosawa's Dreams in my blu-ray player for weeks now gathering dust while I'm on Netflix every night watching documentaries and tv shows (not to mention old Bob Ross episodes).

I went from watching Criterions to Bob Ross 25 minute episodes?

Why is it that I find more pleasure watching a deceased white man with an afro painting mountains and little happy clouds than watching classic Italian Neo-Realism from Michaelangelo Antonioni?!
