Looks like Amazon wised up on WCPII and didn't list it for $39 this time. Greedy capitalists...

I never put much attention to the Title, but after reading about it with relation to Robinson Crusoe everything makes sense now, but I still think it's odd since this problem wasn't on the original play, just the way it was adapted here.

I get that her character was not the typical at the time, but in the end
[Show spoiler] there is not a single hint that their new relationship will change anything, she seems to just be overpowered by Grant charms, their past relation already ended up in a divorce, which meant she wasn't happy with him, and we don't get any indication that this time it will be different with the way he treats her

Many years ago when Criterion issued The Rules of the Game on DVD I saw it for the first time. I struggled to get through it and checked my watch a few times.

Re-visited it this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I don't think I was ready for it the first time. This was the case with 8 1/2 in college, too. I made the mistake of going into a long Fellini film not being well rested. My second viewing was on the big screen and I loved it.

I watched it a few weeks back and I was surprised at the speed at which characters were talking and most times there was absolutely no gap between dialogues by different characters. It felt really artificial.

See, the crazy dialogue is what I love most about the film. As to sounding artificial, I think that was the point. But I really embrace that. I can't imagine the film working as well if the dialogue were very natural. For me, that would have been a step down.

Different strokes, and all that.

I think it makes the comedy work better, but sometimes it is hard to follow specially when reading the subtitles.

Oh definitely, subtitles would be difficult for me to follow at that speed.

Unfortunately, my first viewing of 2001 was an HBO broadcast in the early 80's where I thought I would die of boredom. I caught it again years later on the big-screen and was fascinated by it. Some movies really do NEED to be seen theatrically, though I would argue even smaller films benefit from that large screen, giving both the actors and the visuals the scale they deserve.

Yeah, I first saw 2001 at the theater. Sadly, that theater, which was a repertory theater, with a single screen is long gone. It was a mile away, too.

I saw so many fantastic classics there. I miss that so much. Oh well.

I first viewed 2001 in 7th grade and I took to it immediately. It was presented on VHS on one of those roll out A/V carts. My teacher also showed us Carl Sagan documentaries.

The last few years the sales have been on Feb 25th, March 10th, and Feb 23rd according to my old orders.

It could be any time now. Or a few weeks away.

I'm kind of in between here.

I was in 7th grade too and saw it at a classmate's house. We watched a network broadcast that was cropped and edited for content/commercials we definitely took to it in the sense that we really enjoyed watching it. But if you asked me about it a month later I have a feeling all I would have been able to come up with would have been detailed descriptions of the effects and 'I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that'.

It wasn't until many, many years later that I took to it for real.

Hopefully they will wait for the release of the Before trilogy on the 28th.

This would surely be their top seller at 50% off so I would be surprised if that's not the plan.

I had a similar experience with Rules of The Game, but it didn't hit me until the 3rd viewing. Now I love it.

For my birthday, my Dad took my brother and me and a group of my friends to see 2001 back in 1970 at the Ziegfeld on W. 54th in Manhattan. It was a return engagement. I was only 8 or 9, so I don't remember much of the actual film but do remember much of the experience, with assistance from my Dad who enjoyed retelling the story of our space-crazy group. Funny enough, more memorable was another film we saw at the Ziegfeld right about the same time, Marooned, with Gregory Peck. Also saw Close Encounters at the Ziegfeld years later – what a palace!

My first viewing of 2001: A Space Odyssey was on a local cable station during my childhood in the early 1980s, soon after I had finished reading the novel by Arthur C. Clarke.

Having read the novel prior to seeing the movie for the first time, I felt that I had a good handle on everything that was going on, although I was only 11 years old. In a way, though, I wish that I had experienced the movie first.

I've watched it a few times and as much as I usually like Hawks' use of overlapping dialogue I found it here to be exhausting. Too much; too fast. At times, I just wanted them to shut-up. I'll be picking it up but more for The Front Page restoration than the main feature.

I first saw The Rules of the Game on PBS's broadcast of the Janus Film Collection when I was first starting to appreciate foreign films and my reaction was similar to yours. Watching=zzzzzzzzzzzz! I remembered it more for
[Show spoiler]the brutal hunting sequence
than anything else. After getting some background about how
[Show spoiler] this class of people and their carefree lifestyle would vanish completely with the Nazi occupation
I saw it a whole new way on my second viewing. It remains as one of my favorite CC films.

That's how it was for me with 2010. I read the book in my school library right before the movie came out.

With 2001, I'm sure I had seen parts of it on TV at some point growing up, but it wasn't until the DVD that I watched the whole thing straight through. And I didn't have to reappraise it on a future viewing, I was into it right away. But like other films ( Jaws comes to mind ) I'm fairly sure a lot was left out of the TV version. Still haven't seen it in a theatrical presentation. Howard Stern's account of his viewing of the theatrical release was pretty funny, though.
