Well, it's sort of TV, I guess, but since they are doing so much from Netflix, I'd love a Criterion release of Martin Scorsese's "Pretend It's a City" limited series with Fran Leibowitz. It was a joy the entire series through. (7 episodes).

Doubtful. And I'm not sure what the point would be. There are already solid releases of the first and last.

Damn, I wanted at least two of those (Harold / Days).

I suppose it's good to know the Fellini set isn't affected, but I'm not in a hurry to pay much on that one. It's gonna be a long, difficult road to acquire the two personally requested at set price.

We do not typically disclose things that are about to go out of print...

And that, to me, is the label's most unflattering fault to me. Not their encodes, not their reluctance to release movies on UHD; it's THIS.

It really is a no win situation, I am sure they keep negotiating to renew titles until the last possible moment and they also don't want to alert scalpers about titles going OOP.

Yup. Plus, the end result is the same.

Okay, so if they announced it a month ahead (if they even knew), then the prices/demand would have gone up all the same, just a little bit earlier.

I'm sure they can't just print out 1000 extra copies or whatever at the last-second. That'd be kind of a messed up thing to do to Paramount, a business partner they've been working with for forever.

I don't understand the bashing they get for not announcing it. It's not like they want things to go OOP.

Of course the scalpers are gonna be in on it if they announce it in advance; that's an unavoidable downside. But at least it'll give the customers who aren't in this for profit an opportunity to prepare themselves for what they want to order before it's too late. Charge in like warriors, not like scurrying rats.

You guys have your side on this, I have mine. And to me, nobody wins from an unexpected discontinuation, except for maybe the most eagle-eyed.

I just don't think there's a difference.

Whether it's announced on March 1st or on April 1st, scalpers and customers who aren't trying to profit are still rushing to buy them as soon as the announcement is made and the end result is the same.

The supply doesn't change much because Criterion isn't pushing out a bunch of copies last-minute anyways.

You may or may not be right. Criterion is a niche label, so their stock may not be as plenty as a major brand. All I know for sure is how they process stock through their flash sales, which normally general the most sales for them, and they seem to do a good job keeping up with the demand for the most part. So I'm not really onboard with thinking the difference between announcing it later or never would be marginal.

Nothing I would say is gonna change Criterion's course. Que Sera Sera. All I could do is lament.

Why would that bother Paramount? Criterion doesn't do limited licenses like Twilight Time did. The only way it would matter is if Criterion's license makes unsold stock worthless, otherwise it's no business of Paramount how Criterion manages its stock.

Just read the Memories of Murder review. Soooo is Criterion possibly using 4K masters which were graded for HDR, but have down converted them into SDR?

I mean I'd expect oversight from Curzon. They are more concerned with cinema distribution, and the AE line is just about increasing availability of some film's.

But Criterion are all about home video distribution. Someone surely should have known about this.

And why I would not be surprised this 4K master was graded for HDR, is. That it was made with the Korean market in mine, not international markets.

The same could also apply to the Kar-wai films.

So not only are Criterion in the business of not understanding that Blu-ray media is not just spec'd for hardcoat as some superfluous additional disc protection. Which has lead them to being the prime offender of disc packaging atrocious.

They now seem to not understand that HDR graded 4K masters can not just be simply converted into the SDR space.

So the Criterion Channel is showcasing films by Indian film-maker Bimal Roy. I'd recommend interested folks here to check them out. Roy was a mainstream Bollywood film-maker but he was also inspired by the artistic film-movement of the 60's incorporating those realist sensibilities into his work. My personal recommendations are for Do Bigha Zameen (2 cents of land), Bandini (the prisoner) and the unusual gothic supernatural melodrama Madhumati (which had Ritwick Ghatak as one of the writers).

The day after it was announced, I went to two local Barnes & Noble stores. The first had none of the affected titles; the other had four of the five I needed (and I'm certain that I just missed out on getting all five). So, announcing it at the last minute didn't really impact me much at all.
