No. Criterion is skipping 4K and this is their first 8K disc.

It sounds like their making a conscious effort to move away from releasing films from directors like Lynch, Antonioni, Kaufman, Bergman, and Melville. They still have to pay the bills but it sounds like they're moving towards deeper cuts as a form of self-flagellation.

I think they're relying on the big box sets to support them to a large extent.

Yes, all these deeper cuts of niche interest and obvious limited mass appeal such as Memories of Murder, Secrets and Lies, Irma Vep, Celine and Julie Go Boating, the Wong Kar Wai set.

I think they've pretty much covered what Bergman they are going to release for a little while yet. That set was a big deal. The rest of the Lynch is probably (with the exception of Inland Empire) tangled up by rights issues as some of them are already with other labels. I think they are not releasing any (presumably Charlie) Kaufman because they or another label have already made pretty good releases of all of those.

It's not a conspiracy. They're not releasing titles that you don't know to spite you, but rather to make people like you aware of them.

Good. There are other important films that deserve the exposure that those directors' films have had for decades now. Criterion releasing Bergman and Antonioni at this point is like TCM playing Casablanca and Gone With The Wind... after all these years, you can come up with something else. And they are, to their credit.

I would love to see their first 4K be a release of Mulholland Dr. for it's 20th anniversary.

[Show spoiler]And the statement you quoted only said that 'old white men's' viewpoints are more prevalent, not that there is anything inherently wrong with someone of that demographic having a viewpoint, so there is zero bigotry on display. The old and the white and the male are, of course, welcome to continue contributing to our various national dialogues, but their voice will not be the only one considered.

Finally, word to the wise - few if any self-identify as "woke." It is easier to rail against a scary buzzword than the actual issues in many cases, and "woke" is simply the new "SJW" or "PC." I certainly know what you're talking about when you say the word, but I've never once thought of any ideal I hold within the framework of it being "woke" or not, so any attempt to box in my argument with a term that your side has spent the majority of the effort defining is pointless. No one is ever going to go "whoa you're right, that IS inconsistent with wokeness!" because "wokeness" is only an actual definable ideology in your imagination.
so there's not a single aspect of woke culture that can be called into question or is debatable. is that what your saying?

I don't think it's a conspiracy. They've been quite open about it. I had never even heard of Deep Cover before but it sounds interesting and I will check it out. I think because Duke seems more a genre filmmaker, in comparison to Lee or Burnett, he hasn't been considered an auteur. At least until now. I just wonder if they can sustain their business model if such films become dominant in their release schedule. Obviously they are a very smart company to have survived this long. Hopefully it works for them.

I had not heard of it either, but I'm very interested in seeing it, especially with the cast it sports. I see what you're saying and I hope they can sustain the business. To be honest though, I don't see a Lynch film selling as much as a genre movie, especially in the case of Blue Velvet where it's already been released. I'm not subscribed to the Criterion Channel, but when Deep Cover was announced it had me wondering if it had been on there and generated a high level of viewership. Can anyone comment on this?

Pretty sure it hasn’t been on the channel but they had the streaming premiere of his first film, The Killing Floor, which was originally a TV movie and hadn’t been easy to see, so that might have generated interest.

I don't really mind them changing directions if they feel that it aligns with their company statement, they're still releasing things with often very limited ways of actually watching and helping a wider audience gain access. My own selfish hope is that this doesn't mean they'll completely move away from releasing classic hollywood films that are also often neglected as it's what I mainly buy the collection for. Their recent announcements have pretty much relieved that worry, but it's hard not to still have them in the back of my head.

I know there are sadly some people that entirely disregard older films as far too dated in their themes/attitudes/etc. to be enjoyable to a modern audience or even worse the ones that try to police what others can watch using their own weird moral opinions as some gold standard. I'm glad the current curatorial director seems to not be of that opinion and is still interested in those kinds of releases.

It's national dove day, so hopefully that means we are getting a John Woo set.
