I feel like the only physical media that appreciates in value are rare Vinyl records. To me that is a solid investment compared to blu-ray discs.
No, they don't. Because of the brand recognition and due to the fact that they are so expensive to buy new to begin with, used Criterions will still sell really well.

So here we go again...just got Malcolm X 4K and Wall-E 4K and as always checked for scratched discs and I wasn't surprised by what I found...
[Show spoiler]absolutely pristine discs as usual . Wall-E was also delivered by Amazon on release day in great condition. My B&N had two copies of Malcolm X and five of Wall-E, YMMV.

Got a $10 credit at amazon, gotta make a third order, I'm a filmnoir fanatic. Just watched in a lonely place, the naked city and High Sierra and really loved them also, ordered Purple Noon, Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge and Rififi all watched before but I want to get a blind buy what you guys recommend from these or other criterion that are must have: Night and the city, Leave her to heaven, Detour?

"Malcolm X" is out for delivery from Amazon!

I'll be spending the whole middle of the day with it tomorrow. The film and supplements.

Saw it opening night in the theater 30 years ago. Seen it a good bit since, too. Owned it on VHS, snap case DVD, SE DVD, and blu book blu ray.

But, I couldn't pass up a Criterion edition, as well.

It was my Best Picture choice back in 1992. Just a classic, now.

Still Spike Lee's magnum opus.

Night and the City and Detour are must haves. Leave her to Heaven is an odd ball being in color for film noir but I would put it #3 on the ones you listed.

I would add The Breaking Point. My favorite noir. Very dark in tone and a ending that
[Show spoiler] will absolutely break your heart.

That looks like an excellent choice, didn't see it before but Hemingway and Curtiz sounds like my taste. Thanks!

Watched kiss me deadly, Sweet smell and Ace in the hole all are great. I was thinking to get Gilda didn't see a Rita Hayworth film before. I came back and forth on getting Thief it's my favorite neo-noir, but I'm afraid it will get 4k soon, so I'll wait.

It’s a far different movie than the previous version of the same story-To Have and Have Not.

I'm very curious to see what the first week numbers for WALL•E end up looking like - I have a sneaking suspicion that Criterion might be about to experience the best sales week they've ever had.

Thanks for all the responses.

I hope you're all right about this.

As we can see with DVDs going the way of the dinosaur, I'm hoping this doesn't happen with blu-rays in the next 5-10 years. I'm glad my 300+ Criterions won't be worthless anytime soon.

Heck my Criterion LD aren't worthless. Since I bought a lot of them in the 2000's as people were getting rid of them I suspect a lot of them are still worth more than I paid. Some of them might even be worth quite a bit more than I paid though we're now talking 30+ year vintage.

I'd be happy if DVDs actually did go that way, rather bizarrely they're still half the market more than a decade after BD was introduced. It's hilarious to see somebody leave a Best Buy with a brand new HD (and in some cases UHD) television and a handful of DVDs.

Here's the thing, most of these people use mostly streaming. Plus, most of them sit much too far away from their HDTV to be able to see the difference between 1080p and 4K, or DVD vs Blu-Ray vs UHD. They're buying 4K HDTVs because they really don't have a choice any longer.

My B&N had only one copy out when they opened. I suspect this will be hard to come by during the sale.

Not sure how much brand recognition has to do with it, necessarily, it's mostly just that you can never get them for less than $20. They don't end up in the $5 bins at Walmart like studio releases do, they don't end up $10 on Black Friday like Kino releases do. So there's no downward pressure on prices from actual retailers.

Criterions sell well because they are Criterions. They are considered the prestige label among many collectors and that's the reason they don't drop in prices like that because they don't have to.

Buy your discs for the joy you get out of watching them. The future market value for any technology based consumer product, especially a digital data product, is always a dicey thing.
