I like Criterion, but I've almost run out of titles to add to my collection. I primarily collect Classic Hollywood and almost have all the Classic Hollywood titles. I started to branch out with French New Wave as I discovered those films. I am also branching out into 60s and 70s American cinema, so I suppose there is more out there for me to discover. During the B&N 50% off sale, I got the Bruce Lee box set, "Thelma and Louise," and "Targets." I just saw "Enter the Dragon" for the first time this year at my first TCM Film Festival and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but I went because my husband wanted to go.
My favorite boutique label is Kino because they have been killing it lately with Classic Hollywood releases. I am not region-free, but I do have some region free Indicator titles and I just got my first Imprint the other day. |

I enjoy many of the Criterion releases, but certainly not all. There's nothing wrong with that. |

I am interested in seeing more films from the 60s and 70s, so I am exploring those. However, I am less likely to blind buy those than I am the Classic Hollywood. Thankfully the library, Criterion Channel, and TCM are there to help me see some of those films. I loved the Alan J. Pakula "Paranoia" trilogy. I just hope that "All the President's Men" can find its way to a Criterion or other boutique release some day. I hated "Shampoo" when I saw it. With such a scandalous-seeming presence, I thought it was boring. Maybe I just didn't "get" what Hal Ashby was trying to do. |

In reality though, no, Indicator and Eureka do not compete. Criterion has the largest library of films from the greatest directors of all time and its not even a discussion worth having. Tarkovsky, Kurasowa, Bergman, Fellini, Ozu, Scorsese, Chaplin, Bresson, Godard, Truffaut, and thats just scratching the surface. Love other labels all you want, but nobodies library comes anywhere close.

"Library" is only half of what we're talking about...curation is the other, and the "reality" is that Criterion has been surpassed in that department by some of the above-mentioned labels when it comes to presentation, quality control and supplements.
I wouldn't expect somebody with a collection as small and Region A-centric as yours to know that, though. |

IMO those are Pakula's best films agreed, just really captured the paranoia of the 70s. Criterion should put them out as a boxset. Pakula's death was bizarre, like something from The Parallax View. |

One heck of a haul from my local library’s Friends of the Library store. 50 cents each, just over $25 total. They only sell items donated by someone to help the library. Not former library titles. They had three out and I kindly asked if there were any more in the back as they had added two after I grabbed three and went with my daughter to the kid play area. To my surprise the volunteer came out with a cart full, ended up with 49 total titles. Only one Blu, but I’m not complaining at all. I’ll pay it forward to some friends with ones I already have on blu.

If you owned any Eureka, you'd know that your original premise of them not having an auspicious and eclectic catalogue doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Just a cursory glance at their output will yield an impressive selection containing Wilder, Huston, Lang, Scorsese, Fuller, Welles, Keaton, etc.
Criterion dominates my boutique label collection; I've made two trips to B&N already, including one tonight. But to blindly dismiss the strides that other labels have made in the physical media game is ridiculously shortsighted. |

What some other labels have managed to do, however, is surpass Criterion when it comes to consistent excellence, be it superior A/V quality, beefier extras, booklet quality, etc. |

Almost all 4K is region friendly. I'm surprised that some are English subtitle& extras friendly too. That region free Blu-player argument doesn't hold water anymore. It did 10-10+ years back but times change.
