To me this speculation is almost worthless since, 90% of whatever Criterion releases will make most of us happy.

All of us have our favorite films or directors and sooner or later they will make it.

I would just like a little bit of uniformity.

People are speculating about a BD release of another Kurosawa film because a) Criterion is obviously deeply enamored with the director and b) the next releases to be announced will fall within the month of the 100th anniversary of his birth, so there is the very real possibility of an announcement within the next week or so. Before Che was announced, there were frequent discussions about rumored dates and no one complained about those because there were strong reasons to believe it would be announced soon.

I get that some of you don't really like Kurosawa, and would rather talk about other directors. But it's kind of a big Kurosawa anniversary right now, so people ARE going to want to talk about him. Get over it - adding posts about how discussing it annoys you won't stop the discussion, it'll just further sidetrack things. It'll pass soon enough and there will be another director-of-the-moment or some such to talk about.

I could of went on for a while, and I shouldn't went on for the length I did. But I was just making a point, if there is no truth behind a release, it's a "Wish Lists" type post, so it should be in the "Wish Lists" thread. Also I raer have all the ones I listed plus some of the ones you listed before Seven Samurai.

Oh, it's fine. Did you hear Criterion should put out all of the "Cassavetes 5 films" out on blu this year?

Is there actual information on this, or a real reason to believe this is a possibility? Or are you being smarmy to try to prove some point? Because if the latter - you are completely missing the point.

I think you make a good point about Che and the 100 years.

But what I am saying is that if Criterion is releasing 2 movies a month one of which is an IFC new release then the other should be an opportunity to introduce something new to the collection, instead of rereleasing a Kurosawa movie which has been available in several editions already.

Well they are trying to release more than 2 Blu-rays a month. They have 3 each for January and February, and have said in multiple interviews that they want to be able to put both new and old titles out in Blu-ray at a regular pace. They want to ramp up their Blu-ray releasing capabilities and get more out the door each month.

Doing older Criterion releases in higher quality has been part of their standard operating procedure for long before Blu-ray anyway - they were going back and re-doing old DVDs with higher quality DVDs and trying to get a certain number of those out each year.

Can someone point me to the Criterion thread on here, I may be in CassavetesGodard's blog?

I was purely guessing, nothing more. Not based on any rumours/hints, just on the fact that I think Criterion will announce a Kurosawa title for March.

Wrong Seven Samurai needs to be on blu right now. Many, and I mean many agree that it's one of the best films of all time.

Anyways Kagemusha has already been released.

Personally I would rather have films by Godard, Schlondorff, Visconti, Melville, Olmi, Cassavetes or many other directors before another Kurosawa on Blu-ray.
I think you completely miss my point. I have no problem with anyone wanting to discuss other director or what box Criterion uses to release it's movies. However if it's a director I do not enjoy the movie I do not feel the need to mark smart little immature remarks about it. Some people on this thread like to think they are the only important thing there is and we should only talk about what they love.

I actually I got you point which is why I said the thread can encompass both conversations and I never made any remarks about Kurosawa, until you post which is the one which annoyed me.

But the fact is you mad the immature comment of basically saying that Criterion cases shouldn't be discussed and are not that important. Then saying Kurosawa is one the all time greats, end of discussion. I will buy the Seven Samurai when it is released, but I think there is room to discuss how great it is. In my opinion Kurosawa is not in the Top 10 director's ever, but he's up there.

So in conclusion I was just mocking your post, because the thing you accuse me of doing is exactly the same thing you did.

I guess you just missed the whole point, completely.

I agree that many people think it one of the best films ever and that it should be released, and I will buy it the first day when it is. But that is their opinion, not mine. I just dont like being made to think in monolithic mentality.

General Black & White statements don't leave room for conversation or personal opinion which what I was rebelling against.

It's disappointing to me how hostile this thread has become. I've been away from here for a couple weeks, and to find these types of conversations here makes me want to stay away for a few weeks more.

I remember when this thread was a place for fans and collectors to discuss Criterions, and to create wishlists for what they hoped would come out on Blu. Now it seems all that occurs are arguments as to why this director is terrible, and how can they do that but not this.

Here's a thought, if you don't enjoy Kurosawa (or any other director for that matter) don't buy that release. Yes cirterion released almost the whole of Kurosawa's catalogue, why, probably because it's a name that even non-cinephiles would recognize.

Bigger Than Life is amazing. I've been dying to get this title on Region 1 DVD forever. But to get it on Blu Ray?

When Beta started this thread, the first post reads: "I thought this would be a good way for Criterion Collection Fanatics, and the casual blu-ray fan alike, to track releases, specs, and rumors of Criterion Collection Blu-rays."

So yeah, it IS the place to discuss potential rumors about Seven Samurai coming to blu. Regardless, it's on Criterion dvd, and this is a Criterion forum. Seems like people just get bent if THEIR favorite director isn't getting talked about, and one that isn't their favorite is.

Love Kurosawa, love Samurai, I think Kurosawa is much more influential to the grand scheme of influential filmmaking than Nicolas Ray, but I still love some of Ray's works. He's essentially the Spielberg of Japan, which helped open up foreign filmmaking to the mainstream, and I think his place in cinema history is cemented.

Glad to hear you're getting into the game of Criterion blu-rays, substance. Obviously, every release by Criterion won't be your new personal favorite, but hopefully you'll, at least, be able to find an appreciation for all of the films they choose to release. I like to think that after I witness a film released by Criterion that I've never seen, I walk away with an enlightenment that I didn't possess before viewing that particular film.

I totally agree with you Ccfixx. I have been collecting/watching Criterion releases since the laserdisc era but I was always late in the game. In 1998 when I first bought my first CC LD, they had already released over 500 titles and started migrating to DVDs. Then my college years, I mostly rented stuff. This time I believe I have the right timing to start collecting. There are about 27-28 titles released so far and about 21-21 of them I am interested in(which I have purchased 14 of them already). So another 6-7 titles I am uptodate. 2 to 3 titles a month is just the right pace for me to be able to purchase them as they come out(maybe a bit faster because I wont be interested in some of them)

I also like to buy different versions and editions of my fave movies. I like The Seventh Seal very much. Any of you purchased the european release? How does it compare to the CC edition? I like the cover art on the European release I think I will be purchasing that one to but hoping it will bring me something newer than the cover art such as different supplements than the CC release
