SpiderBaby, thanks for posting this. Have never heard of either of these. More Soviet era cinema is a good thing. So many I have yet to discover. There are a lot of gems there waiting to be found.

Illustration? I believe it's from the movie, although I've only seen parts.

(Although one might be excused for thinking "Women, children, red Indians, spacemen, and sort of idealized versions of the complete Renaissance Man first"... )

No prob. Both films are on Youtube in full, though I am Twenty doesn't have subtitles (July Rain does).

The movie looks like it's rendered in charcoal? If so, my memory of it must be pretty hazy.

Really ? Where did that rumor came from? If true, 2012 is shaping out to be a great year for soviet cinema in BD . Also, does anyone know who grabbed the distribution rights for Sokurov's Faust? It would be nice to see some of Sokurov's greater and lesser efforts in the format.

B&N started doing unique codes, because of the exact reason you asked this question. Too many people were using the 50% off ones via this forum, and other places. Sorry.

Quit mocking me! And it's very easy on how they do that, they obviously ship stuff from different warehouses, don't read packing slips, and/or don't communicate with the other warehouses. That's why I figure I got two copies of Dazed and Confused, since they came in two different boxes.

Branded to kill has shipped, and hopefully it will be Branded to Kill, on BD, or else I'll stop shopping from B&N.

BTW, thanks for posting the link to Youtube to watch Letter Never Sent Zui, I'll have to check it out when I get home (potentially early as it's the last day before 2 weeks of Christmas vacation!) this afternoon.

Alas, I missed it, but thanks for the tip. I was watching The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, which I absolutely loved.

Default Spinal Tap DVD question...

I have the MGM DVD, but not the blu yet (hinting my priority) but a local shop has the CC DVD used for $15. Any thoughts on if it's worth picking up? I know it has a different commentary, but I spend less and less time listening to them (except for CC's since they are so informative).

I definitely appreciate opinions... Without them I will have to pray to my life-size miniature of their Stonehenge for guidance.

This is true! Rushmore and Fear & Loathing definitely have new transfers but the same art. Are you sure about Fanny and Alexander? I haven't watched the blu yet but was pretty sure I read it was the same transfer. Also hadn't realized Charade didn't get a new DVD with the blu upgrade. Anyway...foot, meet mouth

I had a chance to hear the Criterion Commentary, and it's interesting to hear Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, and Christopher Guest, rather than Derek Smalls, David St. Hubbins, and Nigel Tufnel. It's an excellent commentary, and the other features are pretty inpressive.

However, to me, that's bit pricy for a used DVD, even if it is a Criterion, and Spinal Tap, considering I paid that much for the Blu-ray, and I paid 3 dollars for the MGM DVD brand-new, when The Source (Canada's version of Radioshack/Circuit City) was clearing out their remaining DVD stock, as they began to focus on games and electronics instead.

I'd lean more towards the BD upgrade. I'm kicking myself for not knowing about the UK version being cheaper and having different/better special features than the North American version at the time I upgraded though. If you have the capability to import and play region B, I'd look into that version, as there's one that comes with a portable mini-amp.

Definitely pick up the criterion. There are a number of deleted scenes that vary from the criterion to the mgm. That price is to good to pass up. A spinal tap criterion blu is my number oneunrealistic dream upgrade. A new version with all the special features of both versions has become something of a holy grail.

Belle de Jour site review is up - and it looks like I could maybe find some room in my collection even though I have the (pretty good) SC UK import...maybe. Want to see some more reviews on the video discrepancies though.

Given that I haven't the urge to pick up many of the Criterion 2012 releases as thus far announced, though, eases this choice come next big sale.

I'm pumped for A Night to Remember. The commentary with Marshall and Lynch should be very nice. Looks to be a very solid package all around. And just in time for the 100th anniversary of the disaster! (I'm sure this isn't a coincidence)

I was looking at the releases for March, and all have me pretty excited. A Night to Remember, though, seems like a pretty cheesy rip-off/imitation of the James Cameron classic.

Hey, I'm entitled to my 100% accurate opinion.

I read that book in 6th grade. I only remember it well because I had an incredible teacher who made reading those books an experience. He made us sit outside of our classroom on the balcony (it was very large) when it was cold outside when we read Alive (the story of the soccer team that crashed in the Andes).

A Night to Remember was a great book, and I am looking forward to seeing how much more accurate this story can be with out love taking over, or that stupid blue diamond.

I agree. If it only had Celine in its soundtrack it would stack up. Long line Canada's best!!!
