My favorite filmmakers in no order are:

Stanley Kubrick
Woody Allen
Akira Kurosawa
Martin Scorsese
Seijun Suzuki

And I've only seen four of his films but Rainer Werner Fassbinder is becoming one of my favorites.

Seriously. But really though, what I have seen is incredible. Every single one a masterpiece. I'm looking forward to diving in to his other work.

He's one of the only directors about which I can say I've seen his entire filmography (well, 17 out of the 18 total) and I have liked/loved every single one of them

He's becoming a favorite of mine too, but I've only seen 4 of them as well...so I feel like I need to see a few more before I can put him on a favorites list.

I have e-mailed Criterion and have not received a response yet. Does anyone know if they will replace the discs for me? One was purchased used here and The Seventh Seal was from Barnes and Noble (no receipt anymore).

Thanks for any input

Hey same here with Howards End (Bought during November BN sale, finally saw it a couple weeks ago) it skipped around 13 minutes. Ugh they told me
To mail it in and they'll replace it. Could anyone tell me how smooth the process is?

I find that, since he sticks to a rather strict style he's perfected over the last 30 years...if you love a few of them, you'd love nearly all of them.

Considering you received a response from them, I would say the hardest part is over already.

Anyone know if Criterion have any plans or interest in releasing the Hanzo the Razor series on Blu-ray? Just watched 'em all on Hulu and would love to have proper BD releases.

They also gotta release Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure and every other one of his films they can get their hands on. :p

Without a doubt, Alfred Hitchcock for me. After that, probably Akira Kurosawa or Yasujiro Ozu?

Great question. Kubrick, Scorsese, Imamura, Kurosawa and Kobayashi are the ones that come off the top of my head immediately.

I really love Nicholas Winding Refn's work a lot as of recently. Drive was my favorite movie of last year. Speaking of that, how amazing does Only God Forgives sound? I cannot wait for that to come out.

Definitely. Refn is a director who should be watched, for sure. Though, I would add Malick to your list...but that's me. All of your other choices are good with me

Oh I do love Malick, but obviously not as much as those other directors I named.

Though for someone like me, who absolutely hates 90% of the movies that come out nowadays, it pleases me that I'm actually excited for once about upcoming releases, notably with Only God Forgives. I do love that artsy kind of filmmaking by guys like Refn and Malick.

My favorite directors:

Ingmar Bergman
Terrence Malick
Federico Fellini
Krzystof Kieslowski
Luis Bunuel

Followed by:
Stanley Kubrick
Francis Ford Coppola
Martin Scorsese
Jean-Pierre Melville
Jean-Luc Godard

I am happy no one mentioned George Lucas. He is such an overrated director.

So many to count , but here are some of them or at least most of the "top" ones: Almodovar, Buņuel, Melville, Gavaldon, Makavejev, Iņiarritu, Eisenstein, Kiarostami.

Oh, for sure! I'm with you 100%. Most of the movies that are released these days are very much disappointing. And to have someone like Refn come out and make movies that appeal to me is absolutely amazing

Absolutely. I've seen almost all his films with the exception of Fear X, and I just love the guy's work. All his films could be considered masterpieces in their own way, Drive especially. And I'm extremely confident he will give us another masterpiece with Only God Forgives.
