Awesome, all I can say is I hope ya like it. People can start with whatever, but I would recommend a film like this first because if you don't end up loving this, I don't know how you can get into Fassbinder.

All well worth seeing, especially King of Comedy, which is a Fox film, and in theory could be licensed to Criterion.

Unfortunately, Alice and After Hours are Warner owned, so no dice for Criterion there.

I have finally caught up a little and I see the discussion is stimulating as usual (lists, bad sarcasm, hating on CC, Lena Dunham, etc, etc.... Glad it stays the same, as I hate change..

Pat, I am glad that you enjoyed the Rossellini set. I think it is one of the better sets out. I actually just revisited my Mizoguchi set, as I am tempted to pick up next weeks UK release.

By the way CC, I think rekindling that online flame is a fantastic idea. If you post her picture you received years ago on Facebook, I am confident you will find her.. Then again, maybe not...

Because I love to help in the discussion I found this great link below. I figured I would post it to help bring it all into perspective....

Has anyone got any reply from Mulvaney on any e-mail you have sent to Criterion in the past week or so?

I haven't contacted Criterion lately, but I've decided to no longer answer any of their e-mails, either. They can write me all they want and I'm gonna just watch 'em pile up in my Inbox.

You and me both brother. They always play games. When they want something, they have no problem e-mailing me, but when I need something from them, no talkie.

Mulvaney almost never answers e-mails within a week, sometimes two. It's nothing new.

Love how this thread is shrinking by the minute... what did I miss ?? (Was just getting to the good parts when the shrinkage began, oh well, another of life's little mysteries.)

Picnic at Hanging Rock was incredible, it would look ( and sound) great on blu. Honestly I've always admired Peter Weir, but considered him a genre filmmaker. Ive got to check out Witness at the very least. I'm kind of ticked it was referenced in Tiny Furniture.... I'll be dreaming of Hanging Rock, absolutely gorgeous. Some of those scenes seared my eyes. I love films that express how insignificant we are. A timeline of the universe and we wouldn't even be a dot. Highly recommend it!

I have yet to see Picnic at Hanging Rock, but does anyone here have the Australian Blu-Ray? I was thinking about importing that and a few other region free Aussi titles.

The Criterion disc of Harakiri suffers from noticeable EE, telecine machine noise (old HD transfer from 2005...), blown out contrast, missing image on the sides, and windowboxing. I'd go with MoC, although I wouldn't call it perfect either -- while I'm definitely not a fan of the heavy handed contrast manipulation in the Criterion version, I'm not exactly a fan of the... soft (?) contrast in the MoC version either. But it's the [much] lesser of two evils and much more watchable. Criterion disc has more/better extras.

As for M, it seems that MoC and Criterion use the same transfer I believe but the one that you'll want to buy is the German version which is a more complete restoration. It's region free and has English subs, so that's not an issue.

No comment on For All Mankind; haven't looked into it.

Off of Langtoninfo.com it's 23.64 (16.65+6.99shipping) enticing, but the last time I got a region free Blu ray (Certified Copy), CC announces their own a couple months later.

I've contacted them something like 3 times in the past year or so, and I've never received a response to any of those.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of my most wanted upgrades from Criterion (along with Le Samourai and the Soviet films like The Cranes are Flying and Ballad of a Soldier).

The fact that the Australian New Wave films of the early-1970s to the mid-1980s are almost totally MIA in North America on blu-ray is a real shame. Peter Weir's Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously are fantastic films and among my most wanted. So many others I could list. I keep hoping Criterion will pick these up and release them all in a great big ol' Aussie wave of blu-ray love, but at this point I'll take them from anyone who does them justice.

As popular as these films were back in the day, it's tough to see them absent from blu-ray for so long. I thought for sure Crocodile Dundee would have come out by now. At least Beresford's Breaker Morant was out for awhile, but it is now OOP.

I have the Picnic at Hanging Rock UK blu (B locked) and it is ridiculously gorgeous. I would be surprised if CC was able to put together a better package when the time comes.

This was one of the first CC titles I owned on DVD as well. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I second Le Samourai. But the Picnic movie, put me to sleep twice. Cinematography was great, the overall story was mediocre at best. I do not find girls laying on rocks for about 2 hours entertaining.

My order of The Last Temptation of Christ from deep discount has already shipped. I'm most likely getting it before the release date.

I just watched my first silent film, Hitchcock's The Lodger. I've started downloading and watching some public domain films from http://www.archive.org/

I found The Lodger to be excellent, it greatly exceeded my expectations. I was kind of hoping for a different ending, but overall I really enjoyed it. The silent film experience was interesting as well. It's a little strange to see people talking but not hear them, but the story was exceptionally easy to follow, yet engaging and not oversimplified. Though I shouldn't have been, given the director, I was surprised at how chilling the film was all the way through.

I also watched The Most Dangerous Game the other night from the same website. I enjoyed it very much as well. Part of the reason I wanted to watch some of these old public domain films is so that I could view them for free and then be wowed if/when they are upgraded to Blu. I would be very pleased to see either of these get a release from Criterion or otherwise.

I am glad you liked silent films just mention. I would recommend any movies by Buster Keaton, F.W. Murnau, Fritz Lang. Also watch The cabinet of dr. Caligari. Awesome film.
