Okay I added a bit of input:

I'm interested in The Criterion Collection, specifically the following films. I would really appreciate it if you guys could give me some insight into how these films are, provide me with a list of films I should get before others, and anything else you guys could recommend.

* = I definitely want

Future Releases:
[SPOILER]Brazil*
Game* (Pre-Ordered / Coming Tomorrow)
Heaven's Gate* haven't seen but I'm dying to get my hands on this!
Qatsi Trilogy:
Rashomon* now this is a great blind buy!
Rosemary's Baby* one of the greatest horror films, hugely unsettling.

Blu-Rays:
[Show spoiler]3 Women*: very Lynchian per se, it's about identity and dreams much like Mulholland Drive. It's paced like a Lynch film too.
8 1/2*
America: Lost And Found*
Belle De Jour: I think youd like this one: im sure Lynch has been influenced by Bunuels work (even if he hasnt said as much)
Bigger Than Life: a great melodrama that dives into drug abuse.
Black Moon* I'd say rent beforehand. Some may find it cold and detached, but I personally liked it.
Black Orpheus: very enjoyable, filled with great music and sights. It's very romantic and looks marvelous.
Broadcast News*
Carlos:
Crumb: its a very illuminating and off kilter doc bristling with creativity!
Cul-de-sac*: I'd say rent beforehand
Diabolique: Must have! Twisty turny and deserves it's title.
Down By Law* maybe rent beforehand, It's not as great as his previous film.
Four Feathers*: A must buy for fans of Epics, technicolor, and Brits.
Gimme Shelter: if you like this era of music, get it now.
Godzilla
Gomorrah* it's a bit hyperlink (tells
Great Dictator: it's hugely entertaining and waaay ahead of it's time. Charlie Chaplin plays a guy who is mistaken for a certain mustachioed dictator.
Hunger* very graphic and mildly disturbing. Steve McWieen is a visual artist. Contains a single, unbroken 20minute conversation scene. MARVELOUS
In The Realm Of The Senses: I think this is a masterpiece. It's very graphic and filled with unsimulated sex, but it's a very compelling study on obsession, TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING....
Island Of Lost Souls* a must for monster movie fans, there are clear sexual S&M undercurrents.
Kiss Me Deadly* a cheap B film noir(pulp fiction took an element from this film)
Kuroneko: get thus, very atmospheric and unique
Last Emperor* must have
Last Metro me
M* a great film about a serial killer!
Modern Times
Naked Kiss: it's a wild and fun movie about Prostitution and abuse!
Night Of The Hunter* one of the greatest in the collection
Night To Remember*
Pale Flower: MUST BUY
Paris, Texas: slow languorous and sensual, it's a great character study and very moving
Repulsion: a great Movie about going crazy... Pair this one with Rosemarys baby
Revanche: a Wondrous visual treat.
Seven Samurai: The king of samurai films
Seventh Seal* if you're gonna buy one Bergman make it this one
Shock Corridor: fun and wildly satiric movie about a mental institution
Solaris: a very moving (If slow) movie about memory& loss... In space
Stagecoach: The first great western
Sweet Smell Of Success: Must have if you like smart Crime movies
Three Colors: MUST HAVE
Tokyo Drifter: fun, colorful and wild
Videodrome* MUST HAVE
Wages Of Fear: MUST Have, a great thriller
Walkabout: an incredibly beautiful movie, it's a coming of age amidst Australian vistas.
Wings Of Desire: a moving film about an angel, that...
World On A Wire: way ahead of it's time,

I crossed out many that I'd suggest renting first, even if I like them.

But yeah, 2/month isn't exactly a bad year either.

To the extent there are haters at all I would say they (sometimes we) hate mostly on fanboys (and no, that's not directed at you). It hasn't (yet) gotten to the point where people are lobbying Criterion to do a Batman retrospective but it gets close.

As for Nolan and Fincher themselves, I like a lot of their stuff - some of it quite a bit. But I also think it's all pretty standard Hollywood fare (aside from being good, of course) and I also think it's more alike than not. Memento/Fight Club, Dragon Tattoo/Insomnia, The Prestige/The Social Network...are these indistinguishable? No. But are there any real differences between them? Eh.

If one defines extraordinary to include making better mass-market Hollywood movies then most of the other people making mass-market Hollywood movies then sure, one could consider them extraordinary.

But aside from that...
Fanboys/fangirls of any sorts are annoying when they take things to the extreme. I count myself as extreme at times too btw.

A guy I used to work with was always such a jackanape towards me because I was m'eh to Inception. He would react as if I slaughtered his entire family and deficated on their corpses and kept trying to push me to like the film. It ultimately made me hate the film, due to such behaviour from him.

My tastes have changed obviously. but Nolan's films have never really been all that enjoyable to me. I find them dull. Inception was boring. Interesting concept but for me, it fell flat.

I admit I'm a poor film critic as I tend to focus more on content, such as plot, acting skills, and to a certain extent, costumes and historical accuracy, rather than technique and PQ quality.
Atleast you know what you like and aren't afraid to admit it. Many try to be very cryptic and mask their tastes...I generally can forgive poor plots (holes, inconsistencies and contrivances are usually a source of unintentional humor) if they are in service of wondrous sights. Hell, I love Femme Fatale, can something be more telling.

I learned to stop caring about what people thought of my film tastes long ago. I mean, my favourite film is the Monkees' film. I like some stupid crap, and I like a lot of good quality stuff. I just find that some people get far too wrapped up in their personal tastes, that they forget others might not share them. I admit I snark on preferences at times, but I'm not serious about it.

People take this forum too serious sometimes.

And yes, I will be buying Dark Shadows in a few weeks because it was light fluffy fun. Alice Cooper was awesome. Apologies to P@t in advance.

The Game is already on its way from Amazon for me. Was this some special release date for Amazon or did they make a mistake and ship it a week early? Not that I'm complaining or anything. Just thought it was interesting that their release date is a week earlier than what shows on Criterion's own website.

And to be fair, the backlash can get pretty thick too. A lot of times it seems pretty clear that people sneer at 'the Facebook crowd' just to make sure everybody knows they're not, you know, in the Facebook crowd.

BTW, do you consider typing 'Nez' with a straight face one of those extremes?

No, the whole omg, Peter is soooo pretty is extreme. Next calls himself Nez. He's an interesting guy if you read his Facebook. Last update included mentionings of skunks with wife beaters and tattooed and pierced deer trashing his lawn.

Also, the arguments I get into with others on this forum about the legitimacy of their music, since so many people still believe mike never wore his own hat or any of them played their own instruments despite everything that has been said to the contrary.

I better stop now before I get too extreme in my Monkees fangirlism.

Forgot to address this point. I do agree, that sometimes people get a but snobby about certain titles. I poke fun too, but I'm not serious about it as I like some of the "Facebook stuff" too, as you can see by my 2012 purchases.

$10 Word of the Day
(jackanapes) whippersnapper: someone who is unimportant but cheeky and presumptuous.

Personally, I would've used jejune in that situation because it's more fitting. Plus, you get bonus points if you say it out loud and someone doesn't know what it means.

I use jackanape because I'm a huge fan of the novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel. The majority don't know what it means either.

Amazing line-up for December. I'll probably end up buying all of them.
Brazil will definitely replace my current Universal Blu-ray. Luckily I haven't bought the germand release of Koyaanisqatsi yet, so I won't have to double dip on that one. Following of course is also definitely a very nice surprise. I've never watched this film, but I always wanted to. Just recently when I was watching the making of Memento, where Nolan is also talking about his debut, it made me want to see this film so badly.

I think 2012 has been a terrific year for the collection. So many fantastic upgrades and new additions. There were so many great films this year, I couldn't even follow up with buying them. But that's what the B&N sales are for...

Years back, I saw three films that I thought were exceptional. I have always wanted these on Blu ray, once the format took off, and never picked them up on DVD.

The first one has finally been announced! Christopher Nolan's Following.

Now, if only someone would release Aranofsky's Pi and Frankenheimer's Seconds, I would be thrilled!

Contrary to popular belief I do have a first name.

Also, the robot rumor is not true.

No, they're not. (kidding)

I didn't see what the 2nd one was, but the first one is region locked. I don't have a region free player. I will not be investing in one either. I'm sure they'll release one some day. In the meantime, I have enough to keep me occupied. I can't even watch the movies I buy because I have so many unwatched films that I'm trying to get through. So...I'll wait.
