So Bergman is boring to you but you haven't seen any of his films? At least give his films a chance.

Bergman looked a bit dull to me before I gave him a chance - You just have to pick the right entry point for you.

I went with Smiles of A Summer Night and my wife and I really loved it. Have Fanny and Alexander on the to watch pile at home now. Grabbing Wild Strawberries when it comes out.

Meanwhile, hope my sale orders don't take too much longer to get here - I'm down to my last couple of unwatched films. (Though Fanny and Alexander will keep us busy for a week ;D)

Holy crap! Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha totally floored me. I hope to post a full review by tomorrow on my blog.

In short, yeah, it's definitely berserk. I do find it interesting, especially in the context of Williams S. Burroughs' life and writings. On a list of top weirdest films, I'd place it third or so (juuuust slightly behind Eraserhead and Inland Empire), and if I made a list of favorite weird movies, Naked Lunch would be pretty high up there.
Thanks for the link. I'll give it a read as soon as I revisit it in the next two weeks.

My biggest interest in The Devil's Backbone is all the supplements Criterion is putting together with it. Really looks like some of their most groundbreaking work.

Right?! I shouldn't really complain about this, since I was really lucky to get to see it in September, but it's been killing me that I haven't been able to see this since then, especially since I know how fantastic it is.

If you read towards the bottom of my post, you would of seen in Fanny and Alexander that I have seen a couple of Ingmar Bergman's films but found them boring despite them being good looking. That's why I said Wild Strawberries doesn't look as boring as his other films. Because I've already seen a couple and most of the others sound similar in style.

FYI, the couple I've seen are The Seventh Seal and Persona. I have given him a chance and I intend on giving him another chance with Wild Strawberries and possibly Fanny and Alexander if I decide one day that I really want to see it.

Agree'd. If its the same audio commentary from the UK release, that's worth the price alone. Del Toro does exceptional commentaries that are usually so packed full of information that it becomes exhaustive haha

Prepare yourself for a double disc release of Man on Fire

Speaking of left field announcements, I think it would be cool if they released Superman Returns and included Tarantino's essay and Matt Zoller Seits' visual essays.

---------------

Brandon 260,
We are on the same page. I do not think its a film where Baumbach compromised himself and made something more pleasant, which I'm sure some deem it as. There were many times in the film where I felt such great despair for her that it literally made me nauseous. It's funny, moving, tragic, but always full of life. Moments reminded me of Cassavettes.

Man, The Seventh Seal and Persona are two of his best. The only ones I prefer to those are The Silence and Fanny and Alexander.

Doesn't Olive have the rights to Hal Hartley's films?

I don't know about all of them, but they have released three already. (Trust is an essential for all fans of quirky romantic comedies).

The two I liked were Playtime and Mon Oncle. The others I've seen didn't do much for me, M. Hulot's Holiday and Trafic coming to mind. But I did manage to watch them all the way through, so ymmv.

Which particular films are you thinking of?

1.66:1 was a popular ratio in the early days of widescreen cinema in the 1950s (it was invented by Paramount) and remained in use in other territories for quite a long time after.

So while a particular foreign film might have been shown in 1.85:1 in the US, it might well have been composed for another ratio originally.
