My Criterion viewings have been put on hold for a few days, because my copy of The Vincent Price Collection arrived in the mail today, earlier than I expected. I just finished watching Pit and the Pendulum, starring the beautiful and talented Barbara Steele, who appeared in Fellini's 8½. I really need to go find more of her films, especially Black Sunday. I'm also hoping that Criterion releases Cronenberg's They Came from Within (Shivers) soon.

Your post is more informative than mine. I totally agree with your poster.

Each decade has it's gems as well as the run of the mill generic films. Also, we see more mediocre films from the 80s not because they were great films, it is because it will sale due to nostalgia. When we sometimes buy into our nostalgia, we find out that it was not as good as we remember it. Either we are wiser, or our taste has changed.

There is nothing to which one is more severe than the errors that one has just abandoned.

Especially after a few drinks.

My own Blu-ray collection. Actually some in the older title include earlier titles. By remaining DVD's definite include some earlier ones from Edison and the Lumière brothers.

Slightly off topic, but did anyone end up pulling the trigger on the Herzog Collection? I got a shipment notice earlier today so hoping to see this somewhere around release date.

And when Nick Cave played From Her to Eternity, I was transported back in time to that final scene in Criterion's Wings of Desire, when he performed that very same song in the film. I almost had tears in my eyes because I had seen that movie so many times and it was so surreal watching this live and seeing him do this same performance almost like I was a character in the audience in that film. If anyone else has seen this band perform live, you probably would have to agree with me that Cave has this bewitching magnetic energy with the fans and its amazing how touchy-feely he is while performing. It is pure art and pure cinema and I cannot think of another music artist that has this effect on their fans.
I'm a fan of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds & the film. His scene he was in the film was just perfect. I never had the opportunity to see him live though.

I bought the individual Blu-ray of Herzog's Nosferatu, and I'm hoping that Aguirre: The Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo receive individual releases someday.

I've seen most of the films in the Herzog Collection before on DVD, and, quite honestly, I have no desire to see most of them again. I respect and appreciation the artistry and subversion in Heart of Glass and Even Dwarfs Started Small, but one viewing was enough for me.

The site reviews look great for all of the titles, though, with the exception being, funnily enough, the one that I own. My Scream Factory Blu-ray of Nosferatu looks good in motion to my eyes, but those who view Blu-rays with extensive scrutiny will be disappointed.

He might be referring to the original DVD release, released in 1998. It was one of the first three titles Criterion released on DVD to go quickly OOP (the other two being The Killer and Hard Boiled). Criterion didn't get the rights back until 2008, when they released it on Blu-ray and (again) DVD.

I hadn't been paying attention to what second-hand prices were reaching once I had gotten a copy (fairly cheaply, as it was early on), but I seem to recall that prices kept going up, because unlike other OOP Criterion titles, it didn't have a release from any other label.

I pre-ordered the set, however I have not been contacted regarding shipment. I have been waiting patiently all summer.

I watched Pickpocket last night and this was a beautiful, humanistic film. Even though it was only 76 minutes in length, the character and his story was very absorbing. Films like these, and especially directors like Robert Bresson, are few and far between. I honestly doubt another movie like this will ever be made. I highly recommend this. Sorry this isn't much of a review, but I think its worth a purchase.

Re-watched Amarcord for the first time in about a year and a half, which was my very first viewing. Liked it a lot more, now that I knew to expect a more change-over-time story than a traditional narrative.

As far as retailers go, I notice my local Barnes & Noble (in Glendale near Los Angeles) has quite a few Criterions without the Blu-ray stickers, and for one Zatoichi set, doesn't even have the front/back sticker over the packaging. Assuming these are used copies that have been re-packaged? I've heard others on this thread mention that was a problem at some locations. Shame too, since the only Black Orpheus and Tiny Furniture copies they have are either missing the sticker or in damaged cases!

I've not done it yet but you should be using Indesign to set things up for print, I'm sure there are criterion cover templates on the web, not got one off hand though >.>

Some Criterion are just cheaper, usually it's because of lack of supplements or something.

I think Benjamin Button is cheaper cause its not just Criterion - isn't that release a joint effort? hence the blue case?

Yes - Paramount (now Warner Bros.)

TCoBB's home video release is the result of some special arrangement between Paramount and Criterion, wherein I think CC took care of producing the disc, while Paramount took care of manufacturing and distribution (and now Warner does).

This is just my idle speculation but perhaps CC didn't have to pay a license for the film. Perhaps they were even paid by Paramount for executing the release and for the use of their label's prestige value.

yeah I have never really considered Criterions as expensive?

I though £25 for a bluray was pretty decent, especially for the quality, supplements, booklets, and the artwork.
