Great to see the camera work being one of the talking points of the film. Incredible stuff. Emmanuel Lubezki is such a genius. I could usually detect the cheats, but they are much smoother than say in Hitchcock's attempt in 1948's Rope, but amazing considering the film has to chronicle a passage of time of at least a month.

Also, can't stop thinking about Whiplash. Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons gave two of the best performances I've seen this year, and the film has perhaps the best ending I've seen of any film this year. Absolutely riveting.

My favorite film of the year still is Boyhood. Really want to see it again, but so frustrating that the Criterion release is likely a year or two away.
Ah Wiplash! was trailer infront of Nightcrawler for me and I got quite excited about the trailer, I'm a sucker for films that show obsession and struggle and looks really really good. Will try see that soon! nice to see it mentioned .

And damn. I need to see Birman, even if its VOD option! lol

Not going to happen, at least not for a good long while, given that Kino has the North American rights and released it on Blu-ray just a year ago.

Not quite as good as one would hope, but still pretty good. There's a review of it here.

I ask how it is groundbreaking as there are a couple films out there already that have been made with one entire shot.

Russian Ark is pretty famous, its one long take, no cheating and its got a HUGE cast, orchestras etc etc - Trailer: "Russian Ark" - YouTube

(want this in collection please!)

I love the cast and i've not seen anything with Emma Stone thats blown me away but just by trailers she looks so different. Has Watts ever given a bad performance? She was even good in King Kong! and man that film was poorly made at times!

I can't wait to see this film though, huge fan of the directors work and this looks so different and I find it exciting when directors branch out and try new things (Lars Von Trier for example!).

Have you seen Map To The Stars yet? its pretty weird at times but the acting throughout is top notch and the only thing that really let me down was a small bit of bad CGI lol - I really enjoyed it and Julianne Moor and Mia Wasikowska were incredible to watch.
It's groundbreaking (to me) at least that the film is SEAMLESS in terms of flow and pacing...even if its not technically one actual take for 2 hours, you feel as if it is almost, and if time was sped up and distorted as well. The cameras seem to float and hover in the air at times and there's even good use of CGI for a certain sequence in the third act which I won't go into. The film is almost a fairy tale in some ways, mixing realism, surrealism and neorealism. Different genres intermingle here and the director uses really awesome methods of blending everything together seamlessly. I totally loved this film, Birdman.

Need to see Map to the Stars still, as that is a Cronenberg film...looking forward.

I will be back on Monday night to check in on the forum... have a good rest of the weekend folks.

Ah right - have you seen Enter the Void and Irreversible? There is some spectacular camera work and visual effects used. Technically those films are pretty groundbreaking, and I love the film characters, stories and soundtracks too - they are so full of emotion and so dark and raw. I recommend them to anyone who appreciates films but they can be hard to watch!

I love how he made the first part of Irreversible so sickening by having the high pitched tones and the camera literally spinning round in the scenes - I like when they directors mess with audiences a little :P

Also hope you enjoy Map to the Stars, I went in seeing just few trailers and not knowing much and really enjoyed it

Irreversible is one of those amazing films that you only really want to see once (or maybe twice).

But I agree, it really is quite an accomplishment.

Ive seen so many times, just because I'm in love with it, the acting is so realistic and genuine, I adore the cinematography and the music is bliss, who doesn't love a bit of Beethoven?

But I can see how some may struggle multiple viewings.

Enter The Void takes all those incredible elements from Irreversible and creates this mind**** of a film that for me, beats it on so many levels.

Well, I just got back. Incredible film. I need to watch it again as soon as possible to completely formulate the thoughts it left me with. My only criticism is that some of the music queues just didn't work. In my opinion this is the best film so far this year

The exact same thing I said! Some of the score really let some scenes down. Other than that I cant really fault it, maybe they could have added 30 mins-1 hour but thats it really. Acting was superb.

I can't think of a better performance thus far this year than Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler.

He was superb but for me it has to be Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl.

Even still a lot of the darker score really worked. I just didn't feel the 'heist' type music fit with it when it was there, such as the time lapse of him saving all his news clips on his laptop. It didn't match the mood that was set up.. I agree about the actors, this is top notch all around. His 'employee' was phenomenal. I loved the long scene in the car about the raise. They just don't make very many like this anymore!

Yeah it was fine in certain scenes, but some scenes for me were ruined by the soundtrack - one that jumps out at me was the pic played when he's talking to the woman infront of the image of the city in the studio (when he's talking about business plans) - it didn't need it. But I kinda let it go as the rest of the film was pretty strong.

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece like some critics have but it was certainly really good. I loved the voyeuristic themes and how child like he became when he was with the camera - very creepy at times.

I found her performance to be rather average. The character of Amy was such that anyone in that role would get acclaim IMO; her acting wasn't any thing special to me and I think in a stronger year, she wouldn't even be a major consideration for an Oscar nom.

Ah really, well I disagree but we all have different opinions :P!

Im just trying to think of films I've seen this year where I remember a performance and I am struggling haha - but I loved her in that role.

I'm just looking over the schedule now, and am I right in saying that for all the titles released only on DVD in 2009/10, not a single one has been upgraded yet? I pointed this out some time ago as a case against something being released and something was cited as contrary to this (I think it was The Ice Storm, which actually does not fall in this period).

The fact we know the War Trilogy is coming hopefully will start a trend to let us see Z and The Human Condition and other great films on BD.
