Definitely interested in Smooth Talk. Will be picking that up.

Side note: I stopped in B&N today to pick up the Varda set and it had the spider wrapping. Thankfully no noticeable damage to the packaging.

I find myself just about always now returning their regular sized cardboard digipaks and box sets, and have decided not to bother any more. It's been a while since anything cardboard that I did order from them arrived without some sort of damage to it. (Even replacement (outer box) packaging from them the last time I tried was a bust, even after 2 (3?) tries. Though before that the few times I got replacement outer boxes it usually (but not always) worked out better.)

I'll stick with store bought, until that becomes a thing of the past. The big big box sets (olympics, bergman, varda, presumably fellini) usually amazon or deep discount, if they leave the outer cardboard protective box in place (and if it's still available), are usually no-brainers (b&n the one time I tried didn't have it, and no surprise the big big box set arrived with big old corner dent).

And yeah, I know, everybody else never has any such problems....

Interesting that Smooth Talk features Joyce at 34 and it’s also on Girlfriends. Joyce Chopra and Claudia Weill both directed it. Still interesting that they included it!
I don’t mind shared extras, gives more people a chance to see it, so long as it isn’t the only supplement on there. I definitely own some extras two or three times. But if it is the only extra I’m more likely to buy one release over another, which can be frustrating.

Would have loved if they'd went boxset for Bahrani and added Goodbye, Solo (imho his best film) but excited nonetheless for the other two

I've pretty much given up hope on Criterion ever releasing another Kurosawa movie. I'm really annoyed at them, it's been years now since Dreams. You'd think we'd get at least one movie once in a while.
I'm afraid that they are just waiting to release one of those super big, ugly and expensive box sets, which I have no intention of buying (i'm very happy with my regular blu ray). At the very least, give us Stray Dog, Criterion, pretty please? As a Kurosawa fan, these last few years have been very disappointing.

Nothing for me this time. I may check the movies out at some point, but nothing is screaming out to me.

Not thrilled about any of these titles but I'll probably get The Parallax View.

Mandabi, first film made in wolf language?--Not interested.
Man Push Cart--I see homeless men pushing carts every time I go on errands around my neighborhood--Not interested.
Chop Shop--I have already seen enough shops getting chopped during the riots--Not interested.
I may go for Smooth Talk and The Parallax View.

I'm assuming most people who spend money on Criterion blu-rays are also the same people who would never buy damaged packaging.
There are people out there who actually buy these box-sets despite the packaging damage caused by the spider-wrap. Most of the box-sets at my local B&N have spider-wraps with varying degrees of damage and many of them especially the popular titles during sales time don't stay on the shelves long so there must people out there who are buying them.

Agreed. There are three B&N near me, and it's the same story. I think a lot of people accept minor damage as they are more concerned with the films and the discount (if they even notice it at all). Different story here, where the collector mentality prevails - and people get upset and start talking about returning titles that have a slight "bend" in the booklet.

I honestly never heard of any of these titles announced for February. Man Push Cart does sound interesting.

The release announcement today of Man Push Cart and Chop Shop got me thinking about how many times has Criterion released two separate (consecutive) spines by the same director/subject in the same month?

I came up with these (in no particular order)...

Crumb and Louie Bluie (Terry Zwigoff)
Black Moon and Zazie dans le métro (Louis Malle)
Sweet Movie and WR: Mysteries of the Organism (Dušan Makavejev)
Jubal and 3:10 to Yuma (Delmer Daves)
Charulata and The Big City (Satyajit Ray)
Gray's Anatomy and And Everything Is Going Fine (Steven Soderbergh/Spalding Gray)
L’humanité and La vie de Jésus (Bruno Dumont)
Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter (Seijun Suzuki)
Westfront 1918 and Kameradschaft (G. W. Pabst)

I'm not including combined films released under a single spine (such as The Shooting/Ride In The Whirlwind or the Lady Snowblood films)

Diabolique and The Wages of Fear (Henri-Geroges Clouzot)
Bruce Force and The Naked City (Jules Dassin) were released the same month, but don't share consecutive spine numbers.
