I could not think of a better way to ring in the New Year than to re-watch Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire. The film is not a story but a beautiful cinematic poem - centered on Berlin - about angels unobtrusively observing humankind and sharing notes of their vicarious experiences, until one of them (Bruno Ganz) feels compelled to not merely observe but become a part of mankind - to feel hunger, to enjoy a cup of hot coffee and the rubbing together of palms on a cold day, to have his presence acknowledged by other humans. A wonderful supporting part is played by Peter Falk. I was absolutely floored when I first saw it, and it remains an enormously re-watchable poignant ode to the human spirit.
This was one of the early Criterion blu's (2009), and along with Kagemusha, the first I got from them. The transfer holds up, although as always one suspects a newer scan would produce a finer grain pattern and more nuanced color/grayscale spectrum [Edit: Screenshot comparisons with a more recent German blu-ray indicate that it is the case]. If such a thing were to happen for an English-friendly release I would want to upgrade. The audio I am a little less sure of. In earlier watches I was wholly dependent on the subtitles and my audio system was not up to snuff either, so I did not notice. But especially after I started taking French language lessons (and have a decent surround setup), I try to comprehend French dialog as it's spoken. In the early bits involving the trapeze artist, I feel there is some distortion in the spoken audio, and overall I feel that the balance could have been better, as some of the whispers go too low in comparison to the other sound (especially the music). It may be just me, but there it is. People who are HOH are warned that the English dialog in the film (mostly what Falk speaks) is not subtitled. Whether you get the existing Criterion or whether you get a better release, the film itself is an essential for any cinephile (that's not a nihilistic curmudgeon ![]() ![]() Last edited by ravenus; 01-01-2021 at 06:49 AM. |

I thought The Art of Subtitling was interesting and informative. Whitch is included on the Blu-ray and DVD editions of Panique.

Ok Criterion.
It's 2021. Satyajit Ray was born 100 years ago (this May). You know what to do. Make it happen. |

Escape from New York didn't seem to improve much despite supposedly having a new scan done (albeit from an interpositive), and they didn't do much if anything to fix print damage in the new DI. Big Trouble in Little China used the same DI as the Fox release, so it too wasn't notably improved. I saw no reason to ditch my Fox disc in favor of the Shout Factory disc. |

Watched Stalker and unfortunately couldn't get into it. I thought it would be right up my alley but it just didn't grab me. Good cinematography but I can't see revisiting it so it'll probably go to the sale bin
![]() I followed it up with House which I absolutely loved. I think Criterion summed it perfectly by saying: "As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava?" Completely unique, charming and just put a smile on my face the entire time. Also, excellent soundtrack. Maybe the main theme was used a little too much but at least it was a beautiful song. |

https://www.criterionchannel.com/panique I saw what appears to be a remake, Monsieur Hire, many years ago and loved it. I had no idea, until now, that it was based on an older movie. https://www.kanopy.com/video/monsieur-hire (Kanopy links apparently don't play well with this board.) It was briefly on The Criterion Channel, so you never know. Girlfriends was too, and that got an out of left field release, so anything is possible. Beaver has published his (massive) annual review of the best physical media releases. I always enjoy this retrospective, and am grateful for Gary and his team taking the time to put it together.
Criterion's Essential Fellini takes the top spot in the Top 10 Box Sets of 2020, and the label has a couple more titles in that category, and in the the Top 10 BD category: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film9/2020_...f_the_year.htm And yes, he acknowledges the elephant in the room with his very first comment at the start of the review... ![]() [Show spoiler]
