Very happy with the majority of the May announcements (considering getting Nightmare Alley (with another title, The Gunfighter, with the uncertainty of the Signal One releases). Not sure whether I'll get Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Merrily We Go to Hell is a possibility.

A post on the previous page reminded me about a Criterion (States) title I checked out recently which I'm thinking about getting eventually, Cluny Brown.

Wow, was not expecting Fast Times and Nightmare Alley.

Glad I no longer have to hold out for that Signal One release of Nightmare Alley that's clearly never coming.

Closing in on spine number 1,100, I wonder if Criterion will be doing something special for that.

The esteem Criterion has is falling further and further behind other labels. I guess it would be too much to hope they might announce 4K anytime soon.

This is the real big Criterion news of the day, as far as I am concerned. Hope these releases will also include works by Miklós Jancsó, Ferenc Kósa, Sándor Sára, Zoltan Huszárik, György Fehér, and János Szász, all of whom belong in the collection. That said, anticipating Fábri, Mészáros, Bódy, and others from this list gaining Criterion label recognition on this side of the pond is worth celebrating as it is.

Eagerly awaiting some exciting future Criterion releases showcasing Hungary's very fine, criminally-underappreciated cinema.

It's only falling behind for the people who only know how to whine about the lack of 4K releases.

Who genuinely believes Criterion is falling behind? They’re still the most mainstream label.

Im really interested in Trances. I really dig discovering new music through documentaries. I was watching the two minute clip at the bottom of the CC website page of it. I was really getting into the music too until I noticed there isnt one woman in the audience. Dont get me wrong Im def aware of gender roles in that area of the world but to actually see it on film is still unreal for me. I actually zoned out from the music and began playing Wheres Waldo in the audience lol

On a non-4K-related Criterion note, one of the most exciting recent announcements for me was The Ascent, because it signals that they are willing to upgrade Eclipse releases, which it was previously stated would more or less not happen (barring rare and understandable exceptions, such as the Bergman box set). There are so many amazing movies trapped in barebones DVD land (at least as far as Criterion is concerned) that deserve to be rescued, including many of them that have the accommodations for an upgrade in terms of restoration work already done. It's a travesty that the Late Ozu work is only available via Eclipse. I've even resorted to importing the BFI versions of Late Autumn and Equinox Flower (and Early Summer as well, which has a standalone DVD release also in need of upgrading).

For me and whoever wrote Criterion's own mission statement:

Quote:
Since 1984, the Criterion Collection has been dedicated to publishing important classic and contemporary films from around the world in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements. No matter the medium—from laserdisc to DVD and Blu-ray to streaming—Criterion has maintained its pioneering commitment to presenting each film as its maker would want it seen, in state-of-the-art restorations with special features designed to encourage repeated watching and deepen the viewer’s appreciation of the art of film.

Maybe, but it also looks like someone made it dark to the point objects are getting lost in shadow.

The statement literally lists the media they're talking about. I assure you that a small group of forum nerds mad that Arrow and Scream are trickling out a couple of 4Ks while Criterion are not is not diminishing Criterion's brand. It's just gotten beyond insufferable to have to hear people every month whine about this crap like they're surprised. Go buy Tammy and the T-Rex or whatever porn Vinegar Syndrome is releasing if you're more concerned about the format than the content.

Is mainstream synonymous with quality though? They are definitely behind other labels in terms of video presentation.
