I’ve never understood the significance of the title in relation to the film.

Last year, I received an email announcing it at 12:15, just after the sale had begun. Not sure if there was earlier notification on social media.

I think it's more likely to be next week.

That brings up an important point that I had forgotten to consider. I, of course, have a plan for the flash sale, but will I be able to follow through on that if any of it is out of stock?

Well, I checked, and I'm lucky in that all 5 are in stock. So, whew...the plan remains.

Well I just got a gift card for Criterion from a friend, so I figured I would order during their flash sale and since Paramount is putting out Don't Look Now in addition to several other titles Criterion has already released, I thought I'd get them just in case they do go OOP.

Next Tuesday i2/23 s the prime date to really look for it. The last 4 or 5 have been announced in one of the forums, an email, or some sort of Social Media post between 6-9 pm ET on Monday night so there should be some warning -- though I'd check anyway.

I'm giving 80+% chance it's 23rd, 15% for 3/2 and less than 5 for any other date including 'Not at all" which I think is a distant last place

It's the opening words of the story the movie comes from:

I think it has some resonance too re: the theme of faulty perception that permeates the vision.

23 Feb would be fine by me -- I could snag Man Push Cart, too.

Of course, the ideal time would be 23 MARCH!

I still don’t understand why it’s significant enough to be the title of the picture.

How significant does it have to be? The entire film is about vision and perception/misperception, a blind psychic who "sees" without seeing, etc. I'm sure if you think about it, you can come up with your own interpretation based on the film's events. There are hundreds of book or movie titles that are lot more opaque than this one.

Yes, it's all speculative, but just on deductive reasoning, I would say Criterion was simply playing it safe by not acquiring the title. It's a title they have wanted for a long period of time, and to turn it down after such a long period of time sounds rather fishy. Plus the transfer that was released by Scream was rather good.
It's "deductive reasoning" only in that you seem to be deliberately aiming your deduction to support what you think must be true, and ignore what doesn't fit your belief.

That's quite a loaded statement. Even if it was the case that Criterion was ditching Allen and Polanski because of their questionable behavior, it's still highly questionable to cast it as them "shaking in their britches".

Maybe they just decided that Allen and Polanski are disreputable people and don't want to be associated with them any longer, rather than being worried about their image if people thought they were supporting them.

All of the Polanski films they've released on BD and DVD are still in print. That should be just as damning to their image as releasing yet another Polanski film, so why would they keep them in print if they're "shaking in their britches"? But you ignore that because it doesn't fit in with your preferred theory. Just as it does when you ignore the other directors they seem to have abandoned that haven't been tarred with controversy, because there's no apparent hook you can hang your belief on.

The real point is that Criterion has never made any public statements regarding either director. If they were truly trying to protect their reputation, they'd be releasing public statements about no longer being associated with either one, like every other media company seems compelled to do. Criterion has never made public comments about decision-making process, about why they choose to cover A and not cover B, other than vague generalizations about their mission statement. Trying to "deduce" the reasoning behind their decisions to fit some perceived agenda is absurd.

Yeah, I would say Criterion is shaking in their britches to avoid controversy. They don’t want/need any backlash in this climate. Times are dangerous.

Too early to start a wish list for next month? Or continue with this endless speculation of people saying Criterion won’t release things?

I for one. Hope they finally upgrade the Pialat films and Ratcatcher and release Morvern Callar!

If Criterion is the label that ended up picking up the Pianist I hope they release it so I can eat my own foot and get a great film on Blu-ray finally

I’ll do it, but I’m going to need some whiskey to help with the pain. If Shout releases it or Severin, I am expecting some shoe eating from those who doubted me.

I would like to see an announcement for a stand alone release of Hour of the Wolf, and if I'm gonna get real picky, I really want Baby Face.
