My order from Criterion.com just crossed the Canadian border. Might be my last time ordering as I got dinged for $45 in taxes/fees from DHL. Shout and other places ship USPS and usually costs nothing for reasonably sized orders.

Shame... oh well.

That brings each title to $36. So this sale was f*cking pointless.

If you contact DHL and get the waybill you can "self-clear" the shipments with Customs yourself. You'll still have to pay the GST on the items but you won't have to pay the extortionate fees that the courier companies charge to clear the items for you.

It might not be feasible if you don't live in the city but it's something to keep in mind.

It's the one warehouse right? or is there another location they fulfill orders? I'm kinda worried mine are backordered even though it says packing for shipment. but then that's been almost a day and half like that.

I only remember the one location but I guess more people this time around and the whole pandemic thing probably makes it worse. I'd just ask to make sure I'm not going insane but I might be anyway

My stuff has been being packed for shipment for over a day now. Two of the movies I ordered are on backorder, but I don't know if that means mine are included in that. Anyone know? Just not sure if that means I'll be waiting a while or not.

Hi RC. If you don't mind me asking, is that something you can do with a phone call to Customer Service and then arrange a pickup in person at their depot or does that have to be arranged via paperwork beforehand?

Thanks.

IIRC it is just one warehouse. The problem is it's the Alliance Entertainment warehouse in Shepherdsville, KY -- the same warehouse behind Deep Discount, WOW HD, Blowitoutahere & other DirectToU retailers (DirectToU is an Alliance subsidiary), and also a backup online supplier for Best Buy, Walmart, and in rare cases even Amazon (Target once used them as well but now uses a different vendor). There's so many possible ways that warehouse could sell out of a title that it would be a close to impossible task to track all the possible ordering sources in real-time just to avoid backorders. Perhaps the bulk of Criterion orders this week came in during the flash sale, but definitely not all of them.

I've noticed this only ever happened with DHL! Every other courier package seems to go through without any additional costs.... Do you know anyone in the US? If it's DHL I usually have it sent to a friend or a family member who will ship the package to Canada. If you live close to the border it's not that expensive to pay for a postal box, of course this would be after the pandemic and the boarder re-opens!!!

Crazy. My package arrived today from DHL into Canada. I too, got dinged 33 bucks in fees. The only saving grace with that was, I went in on the order with 2 other pals so we divided up the cost. But damn, it was only in transit for a day from the States.

Ya, I got dinged $33.12 by DHL today.

You're right, can't beat that lightning fast shipping... impressive to say the least!

You may have to Google it in case I’m leaving out some steps because I’ve only done it once myself during last year’s TT sale, but after I got an automated voicemail from FedEx saying there would be these fees, I called them to say I’d be self clearing. They gave me the waybill number which I took to Customs who told me how much GST I owed. I paid that and got a receipt. Then when FedEx called to say it was ready for pickup at their local distribution centre, I showed them the receipt and they gave me the package. So there’s a bit of legwork involved but I live close to the airport so it was not really out of my way.

Can you get a breakdown of the C$33? Is it all brokerage fees, or does it also include GST? (Probably none of it is actual "duty", i.e. tariffs.)

Visconti’s The Damned is being added to the Criterion Channel. Hope it starts with the Criterion logo and I hope it gets a Blu!

CRITERION SUB-LABEL ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED:

In addition to owning over 1000 Criterion spines (the majority on both DVD and blu), as of today we now also carry 45 of the 46 Eclipse box sets at Beyond Video.

The one set eluding us is the out of print Eclipse Series 6: Carlos Saura's Flamenco Trilogy.

Not pictured: the sets devoted to work by directors highlighted on our Great Directors Wall. Akerman, Bergman, Fassbinder, Fuller, Kaurismaki, Kurosawa, Lubitsch. Makavejev, Malle, Mizoguchi, Oshima, Ozu, Satyajit Ray, Rossellini, Varda are directors with Eclipse sets who are among the 350~ directors on our directors' wall. Those box sets are kept in those directors' sections with all other films directed by them, rather than the Criterion section.

Went on a little vacation this week, but managed to pull myself away from the white sands and my gooey adult blender drink to grab these. I couldn't get to the room fast enough, however, and missed out on getting Imamaru's "Vengeance is Mine" before it sold out

The vacation was much needed, but catching up on all the posts here since last Friday took the better part of 20 mins. Lots of great buys folks! I would have given many of ya'll the thumbs up but I already ran out of my 24 hour allotment! What a dumb rule.

The Criterion Channel has streamed a number of titles without the Criterion logo that they have subsequently released. The two Dorothy Arzner titles immediately come to mind, as well as the films they were showing to early subscribers before the channel officially launched (from memory, including Mikey and Nicky, To Sleep With Anger, Detour, and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen). Also Where Is the Friend's House? might not have featured the logo either, though I'm working from memory. All About My Mother is another definite example. I don't think even the edition of Come and See that they broadcast was their own prior to its subsequent release.

I guess what I'm saying in an excessively long way is no logo doesn't mean they won't be releasing it, but obviously having the logo is a much stronger predictor.

Yeah I never said anything definitive. I just want the movie to get a Blu release. I know the Criterion Channel isn’t indicative either way. I know people are still convinced movies are coming to Criterion because it had a C on the corner way back in Filmstruck days.

I only mention it because whenever the topic comes up people bring up whether or not there was a logo, and shoot down the possibility if it doesn't, but there are numerous examples of films they've streamed without the logo that they've later released. Arsenic and Old Lace has been a title of particular discussion. It's up right now and doesn't have a Criterion logo, but it's been widely speculated that Criterion has it, so we'll see if they ever release it.
