Well, you activated my paranoia and I had to check. Worked like a charm. Check your time stamp and fast forwarded the entire film at 1 speed to be sure at no point does it get stuck.

I've seen all those except Nashville, which I've been wavering on buying. I better snag one while I can. Virgin Suicides is on my wishlist too, moving it up just in case.

Only one of the OOP titles I'm missing is Days of Heaven. I had it in my hand a number of times during B&N sales, but always put it down in favour of something else. Rather than dash out to B&N to pay full price (my local store has a copy), I may just pick up the new Paramount release. Sacrilege, I know. But full price is two sale-price titles come July.

I would advise everybody who was bothered by yesterday's sudden (if not unpredictable) wave of titles going out of print to write to Criterion and express disappointment in the way it was handled to let them know people want to be given a proper head's up.

If folks have a bad disc, contact Criterion at the orders site and see what they say. OOS or even OOP doesn't mean all copies are gone immediately, but the earlier you ask you more likely it is

If you contact them and they really don't have a copy, then you're certainly no worse off than you will be by worrying about something that may be fixable.

I usually start with orders@criterion.com -- I've only had 3 disc I know that needed replaced out of many hundred. And at the absolute worst -- it's just a Bluray disc, not a body part or significant other
and usually they either help or forward it directly to the correct dept.

Or you could just mail the bad disc to them and see if that will push them

I am literally unable to fall asleep right now. Being forced to downgrade like this are causing me panic attacks, and I switched over to BD to avoid the panic attacks. But it’s even worse now because a simple conversation reminder could trigger the anxiety all over again.

For example I’ve been rechecking the same out of print disc for almost five years now, and even though it always has worked so far, the fact that other discs going out of print and going up in price and could be gone any moment is literally keeping me up at night with heartache. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m felling the edges of discs to make sure they’re not peeling, looking for any signs of discoloration, even checking for a different odor than usual. I am literally having anxiety attacks over this; I am not making this up at all.

Then I hear other Paramount licensed titles could be going OOP even weeks after release and then I’m forced to buy something I might want later immediately and that is never pleasant to be forced to get something in an emergency because it won’t be available in the future. Nothing should ever, EVER ago out of print, so I won’t feel this horrible way ever again.

I had my OOP Pierrot le fou stop working several years back and Criterion replaced that disc for me. This was long after the title had been OOP so there may still be hope if you contact Criterion directly.

I’d rather lose a body part or significant other than be forced to downgrade to a bare bones inferior version of Days of Heaven from Paramount. They are causing me to lose a night’s sleep over this.
This is a joke, right? Like you can't be serious.

(At the very least the compression will likely be better on the upcoming Paramount disc.)

Don't Look Now has been released in a far superior edition by Studio Canal.

La Dolce Vita is still available on Amazon from a third party so you'll have to pay shipping. Better than nothing. Definitely would've been nice to have notice that these titles were all going away at once.

Anyone think the rest of the Paramount-licensed Criterions are going to be affected?

My concern is that a few Paramount releases have been marred by some form of motion-smoothing interpretation introduced. Trading Places was quite egregious in this, and I noticed it in Pretty in Pink the other day on a re-watch. Not sure about the 4k releases, I didn't notice any in Coming to America, but it might be there.

I think at this point you'd have to consider the older ones at risk, and if you have a real interest in any bump them up your wishlist.

Do movies from the various Eclipse DVD sets show up in HD on the Criterion Channel?

So, is the feeling that this is that this is the end of Paramount’s partnership with Criterion, or that it’s just a limited thing? I mean, it seems weird they would let Parallax View get released at this point if this was in the offing and they were just gonna start pulling everything. (Or, as pointed out, let La Dolce Vita stay in the Fellini set.)

I wouldn't say their partnership is completely over as there still might be a few Paramount titles that Criterion has yet to release, but after those are released I could see Paramount not giving Criterion any news titles. At least for the time being.

Is there anywhere that the Criterion of Days of Heaven may still be in stock (that ships to Canada)? I tried B&N but when I went to checkout they don't ship to Canada, which is strange because I could swear I've ordered from them before.

If I have no luck getting the Criterion, I'll just grab the upcoming Paramount release. Sorta bugs me though because this is the ONLY Paramount title that I don't own out of the bunch that are going OOP.
