If I have no luck getting the Criterion, I'll just grab the upcoming Paramount release. Sorta bugs me though because this is the ONLY Paramount title that I don't own out of the bunch that are going OOP.

Bought Friends of Eddie Coyle and Parallax View at my local B&N. Didn't want to assume View would still be around for the next 50% off sale.

I hadn't checked this thread yesterday, so I missed all the commotion. Thanks to those who posted in the Kino forum, asking if Kino might snag some of these suddenly OOP titles. Otherwise, I might have missed out on Coyle.

There’s no way a blu-ray that came out a month ago is going OOP. Most licensing deals are for at least 5 years.

For example I’ve been rechecking the same out of print disc for almost five years now, and even though it always has worked so far, the fact that other discs going out of print and going up in price and could be gone any moment is literally keeping me up at night with heartache. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m felling the edges of discs to make sure they’re not peeling, looking for any signs of discoloration, even checking for a different odor than usual. I am literally having anxiety attacks over this; I am not making this up at all.

Then I hear other Paramount licensed titles could be going OOP even weeks after release and then I’m forced to buy something I might want later immediately and that is never pleasant to be forced to get something in an emergency because it won’t be available in the future. Nothing should ever, EVER ago out of print, so I won’t feel this horrible way ever again.
What exactly do people mean when they say disc peeling? I've never noticed such a phenomenon on one of my discs, although I've had a few discs that ended up bronzing.

In my experience, defective Blu-ray Discs have by and large been accounted for due to acknowledged manufacturing defects. They don't generally "just degrade" the way DVDs would often do, and companies have always been willing to provide replacements.

Criterion has listed the reasons for these all going OOP is "rights expired". So, likely any of the more recent Paramount releases will also go OOP once their licensing period is up, unless something changes and they can renew or renegotiate. That seems unlikely with Paramount's newfound interest in the home video market. Some of the OOP ones seem like fairly large titles for Criterion so it seems like they were either available for renewal or too cost prohibitive at this point.

I remember back when the original Criterion DVDs of Spellbound and Notorious went OOP within months after their initial release. I don't know what the situation was with those titles, but I have learned to not take risks when trying to get the things I want. I gladly paid full price for the disc now instead on betting on the likelihood it would be available this summer. From what I have read so far, the Paramount development with Criterion is conjecture, without official info from either organization.

Pierrot Le Fou officially went out of print only like 3-4 months after the original blu-ray was released, although it remained available at SRP for a long while after that.

By the way, I was wondering if it would possible to take an inventory of Sony-pressed Criterion releases that have been prone to known defects/problems. I know of Le Cercle Rouge, Solaris, The Lady Vanishes, and The Phantom Carriage. I've heard a few murmurs about 12 Angry Men, as well. Any others? Sony-pressed copies of M, Lola Montes, Summer Hours et al. weren't prone to defects as far as I'm aware.

My copies of Red Desert and Vivre Sa Vie seem slightly off. The former is fine cosmetically, but takes an oddly long time to load on a computer(no issues in a set-top box player). The same is true of the latter (long loading time on computer but no set top box issues). However, my Vivre Sa Vie is a bit odd-looking. There's no bronzing/peeling. It's just rougher than normal around the edge.

I think the deal with Pierrot Le fou going OOP so quickly was that the DVD had already been in print for years and they just happened to release a blu-ray just before they lost the rights.

The Parallax View is new to the collection on BOTH blu-ray and DVD so it’s safe to say that one is, well, safe. Lol.

I wonder how in danger some of the Fox titles are in terms of going OOP? Wonder if Disney will allow Criterion to renew those. Otherwise, Kagemusha might be gone soon.

I really hope Paramount plans to do something with La Dolce Vita. The whole reason I started collecting Criterion was because La Dolce Vita was only available through the Criterion disc.

I would hate for it to go the route of Mafioso, which was next to impossible to find after the DVD went out of print.

It should be a safe for well over a year at the very least. I remember they introduced Leon Morin, Priest to the catalog after several Studio Canal titles had already been on the chopping block, and it was around for a little less than two years before they lost it.

They have a BD lined up for later this year.

The interesting question will be what, if any, special features show up on that. The Koch/Lorber DVD still has a few things on it that the Criterion release didn't port over...

This is the real loss for Paramount's new editions...not just possible changes in film transfer, bad cover art, etc.

Well, the Criterion disc is still available in the Fellini set at least.

I have both, luckily... and the Koch/Lorber DVD... so I'm set.

But haven't opened my Fellini box yet after being gifted at Christmas. Is the 'La Dolce Vita' disc exactly the same here as the individual release? What about the booklet materials? Are those also replicated entirely?

I think those three Hitchcock titles were available for a year or two. Straw Dogs was only available for about a year and it had a sticker on the packaging stating that it was only available for a limited time.

Which is why Criterion was able to replace (and may still be; I don't know) copies of Howards End after the Bronzing Business.

It doesn’t include the booklet, but it has the same 4K master, all of the extras, and an additional extra(segment of a documentary that’s included in 4 Parts on the discs in the set).

Never say never again. Paramount could change its mind after a year's time.

At any rate, I suspect that Robinson Crusoe on Mars will be with Criterion until the end of time.
