If memory serves, Blast of Silence and Peeping Tom are looking good for upgrades!

I am debating whether to get single releases I need or a couple of box sets, thinking Fellini and Bergman? Maybe half and half my budget?

I really want to get the Bergman set this time around, but I think I might wait and get it in November. I've seen it in person, it's an amazing looking set physically and the films are great of course!

Yeah, that’s what I’m debating. Maybe I’ll save it for November as an early Christmas present to myself.

I have only $140 to spend on this sale. I was going to get the Varda box but now I really think I will go for single releases. I am not really sure if most of the Varda films will be something I will really like or watch a second time.

I'm going to complete my Criterion DVD to Blu-ray upgrade project with F for Fake and Sweet Smell of Success.

I'm also going to pick up The Human Condition, The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, Bringing Up Baby, and Mirror.

I was also going to get A Matter of Life and Death, but it was already pretty cheap on Amazon. I needed to limit the damage within July, so I got that a week ago.

Did they lose the rights to Arkadin? I assumed this is one of those DVD titles that went OOP because they might be planning an upgrade.

I'm not sure. Often I'll see it say "Currently Unavailable" when they might be planning an upgrade.

Imagine Mr. Arkadin, The Trial, The Other Side of the Wind (plus They'll Love Me When I'm Dead), and Citizen Kane all in one set

The day pre-orders opened on the Bergman box set must have been quite an interesting day at the Criterion offices.

"Wait...we've found a way to release A Ship to India and a bunch of people will buy it? Who else can we do this with?!"

In this case, “how can we get away with rereleasing Citizen Kane on Blu without getting too much anger? Box set!”!

I'm actually kind of surprised Warner never made a set with a snow globe included.

I would love that (Welles is my favorite), but if they wanted to do a comprehensive set, I think the biggest hurdle would be getting Touch of Evil for inclusion since the most recent restoration and reconstructed version are owned by Universal and being licensed to Kino for release this fall. I know that other director retrospective sets (Bergman, Fellini) had gaps, but I believe those are for lesser-known titles, whereas Touch of Evil is one of Welles' two or three most renowned works.

The Stranger is public domain (but with existing releases from Kino and Olive), as is The Lady from Shanghai (but Sony owns the 4K restoration that was done). Olive also has rights to the restoration done for Macbeth. Otherwise, I think Criterion has released the rest of his filmography at some point, with rumors of them releasing Citizen Kane on Blu and having rights to The Trial and The Other Side of the Wind.

I never quite realized just how much I'd like to see Criterion tackle The Lady from Shanghai... until now. Especially if it's stacked like the rest of their Welles releases.

Sony also has a relationship with Criterion, so I suppose it's possible.
