"Select films will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos." It looks like they'll have SDR transfers though, so I hope they choose wisely. Mulholland Dr. would greatly benefit from HDR and Dolby Atmos. An old black and white movie like Citizen Kane, I'm fine with it being in 4K SDR.

Several titles I would like to see get 4K re-releases from Criterion are Tree of Life, The New World, Roma (Alfonso Cuaron), The Irishman, The Last Temptation of Christ, After Hours, Cercle Le Rouge, Army of Shadows, Le Samourai, La Haine, The 400 Blows, 8 1/2, Diabolique, Breathless, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, High and Low, Dreams, Memories of Murder, Mishima, Amores Perros, Ghost Dog, Persona, Three Colours Trilogy, The Before Trilogy, Bicycle Thieves, Harakiri, Kwaidan, Hausu, The Seventh Seal, The Night of the Hunter, World of Wong Kar Wai set, Paris, Texas, Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer Day, Young Girls of Rochefort, Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Graduate, The Great Escape, Dekalog series, Tampopo, Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, The Florida Project, etc.

I'm guessing this or more, depending on how extensive the KANE set is. Maybe $59.95 SRP?
I was thinking the same price-wise. It's going to be painful on the wallet.

It 100% would have been part of this announcement, unless it’s a Blu-only release.

Whatever the price point, I'm definitely waiting for the February sale to pick up Kane. My bet is $60 MSRP and $30 for the sale.

I'm thinking November will be Citizen Kane 4K, Mank, and three other titles. I can see Criterion releasing a 4K title once a month.

Logically if they are releasing Citizen Kane, that would be the most opportune time to release Mank, and I'm pretty sure they picked up the license for the film.

What an announcement. Great slate of films, with half upgrades and half new titles. Happy for everyone who is excited.

I can see Netflix holding out a license for 4K titles. Blu-ray only.

Yeah, sorry all, I did a quick edit to clarify. But looking back at news on Mulholland Dr playing at Cannes Classics this year, Lynch did approve of an HDR master. So I would almost certainly expect the Criterion to have HDR.

This is all interesting and exciting. But we are missing two important pieces of information. First, the price. And two, since they're including the Blu-Ray with the UHD, does that mean there will not be a Blu-Ray only option? We saw how well that worked when they tried it with DVD.

Now, if the Blu-Ray/UHD sells for what the Blu-Ray sells for now there will be no problems. But if the combo sells for more you're going to have a large group of unhappy people, just like they did when they made the DVD/Blu-Ray combo, which was subsequently withdrawn.

Heres the thing there's always gonna be unhappy people. If they do only movie on UHD and all the extras and movie on Blu. Then it will be a different situation than the Blu/DVD situation. Because a good number of the complaints for that were the "useless DVD". Where a movie only on UHD and movie+extras on Blu means that the Blu won't be useless. (Here comes the "I don't watch the extras I just watch the movie" brigade.)

I'm guessing that for the titles that are "new" to Criterion (or returns) like KANE and PIANO, the 4K/Blu combo will be the only release for a while...for the others, I can imagine them splitting them up sooner, if they get significant feedback. But their language seems to indicate that these will all initially be combo sets.

The way I read the announcement regarding HDR was that select films will get Dolby Vision/Atmos and the rest will have the base HDR10 with their normal LPCM or DTS audio track. Maybe I’m making to big of an assumption, but is would seem odd that they waited this long to start releasing 4k discs and not have some version of HDR encoding on all 4K releases.

Mulholland Drive is getting the 4K treatment? I’d buy that for sure, when it’s on sale.

Only definite 4K for me on this list is Kane, maybe The Piano, but probably at a B&N 50% off sale for both. No Best Picture winners, even the ones they already have licenses for (edit: but I guess we knew that when Kino Lorber announced Silence of the Lambs).

I expect people will complain. I don't have a 4K tv and regardless, not in a hurry to rebuy a collection's worth of movies. That said, I have bought combos for the blu rays for specific things - price is the same or less being a big one.
I did get the Hitchcock steelbooks because I'm a big fan and they looked great.

This 4K announcement makes the recent Uncut Gems announcement feel like such a waste. Why release another Blu-ray when they could've easily saved Uncut Gems for 2022 to release it in 4K?
