I wouldn't have minded some new artwork for The Red Shoes. The Blu-ray art is fine but I would like something more painterly or with more colour.

Add in the low quantity of titles and the fact that all three were known to be coming at some point, and it's just a really underwhelming month, especially for me, since lately I've been interested in nearly every single title that isn't a documentary, and usually at least one or two titles per month I feel particularly strongly about.

When is the last time they've ever had just three releases in a single month? I don't believe it's happened since I started following them (around early 2018).
Perhaps it could be due to Criterion soon announcing a Kurosawa boxed set to go with the 3 announced today. One can dream.

Out of curiosity, since I hadn't really been paying attention to this, with the mention of December slates often being lighter, I decided to go back on the past few years and see what the December releases had been.

2020:

Crash
Amores perros
symbiopsychotaxiplasm (upgrade)
Mouchette (upgrade)

2019:

Until the End of the World
The Story of Temple Drake
Old Joy
Tunes of Glory (upgrade)

2018:

Forty Guns
A Dry White Season
Panique
Sawdust and Tinsel (upgrade)

2017:

Election
The Complete Monterey Pop Festival (upgrade)
General Idi Amind Dada: A Self-Portrait (upgrade)

2016:

Heart of a Dog
The Exterminating Angel (upgrade)
Roma
The Asphalt Jungle

So, at least in recent years, there have only been three or four releases in total, with only two or three new titles each time. I'll have to keep that in mind to temper my enthusiasm for future December announcements.

Does anyone know if the UK versions of the WKW discs have been affected by the glitches and defects? Thanks

It would be also be nice to see some films previously issued on BD-R reissued, like Wonderstruck, and several of the Sony released titles like The Handmaiden and The Salesman are now OOP.
A Criterion UHD of Invisible Life would be ballsy! One of the three greatest films of the 2010s for me and also the very last film I saw in the cinema before the pandemic struck.

Whatever happened to the supposed releases of The Color Of Money and After Hours?

I specifically remember reading an article about the restoration of TCOM.

Lots of info in the thread for the set. There are some reddit posts as well. Criterion is replacing the defective discs.

Considering the wealth of great info by reviewers and added by members here on the site, I've wondered why replacement programs aren't listed under specific titles when they occur. Almost all of the ones I've discovered were deep into the forum post comments, and I'm often finding them years after the fact. Luckily, most fabulous companies still have replacements to offer, but in some cases the program has ended, the company ownership has changed, or they went out of business.

Re: Kurosawa box

My guess is it's not easy securing all region licensing (and lord willing, UHD) rights for those films from Toho. I'd imagine Criterion would like to cast a wide net with a Kurosawa box set release. I think the Bergman set did so well because it had a lot of interest outside of North America because the set was region free.

PS: I recall something about Toho enforcing a 6 month waiting period of sorts for releasing movies. I don't know if this is still applicable. Putting this out there because I know someone will know.

Well I'm glad it's just this set and not another widespread 'bronzing issue' that happened years ago.

This may have already been posted, but does anyone know what the price will be for UHD releases of single films, such as The Red Shoes? What would the price be during the 50% off sale?

Thanks.

The prices are always listed on Criterion’s site. The Red Shoes UHD+BD is $49.95, so half price is $25.

Has this year yielded the most “new film” releases from Criterion? It’s felt like every month for the last year or so there’s been something from 2019, 2020, etc

Interesting observation. Of the 123 titles listed with a release date of the 2000s and beyond, I count the following titles that were put out in 2021:

Minding the Gap
Rolling Thunder Review
Man Push Cart
Chop Shop
Memories of Murder
2046
Tiny: The Life of Erin Blackwell
Pariah
Beasts of No Nation
Throw Down
Love & Basketball
Uncut Gems
One Night in Miami

So that's an average of about one post-2000s title per month
