Ace in the Hole and The Night of the Hunter: plastic case
Y tu mamá también: digipack (probably because its 72-page booklet is too thick to be stored in a plastic case)

Site review: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Le-Ce...307218/#Review

Does the colour grading on Le cercle rouge REALLY warrant a 2.5? Is the colour grade actually incorrect or is that score merely based on personal preference? (I'm actually not sure that's why I'm asking - Melville's films do tend to skew towards a more bluish tone)

I don't think anyone has any evidence that the current / "new" grading is incorrect; it's certainly not a blanket grading (like you get with Ritrovata or Eclair) and everything seemed appropriate to me while watching it.

Put it this way, I certainly wouldn't put much stock in a review by someone who gave the previous Criterion release 4/5 in that department when Criterion themselves recognised that their colour grade was incorrect. And considering that they acknowledged that, I don't think they'd release it again without doing some due diligence.

Yeah, I've noticed that he tends to score discs particularly low when he doesn't agree with the colour grading. Gives Criterion discs with awful compression a perfect 5/5 but gives a competent transfer a 2.5 because the colour grade is different.

I'm sure the 24 hour sale will start around 10:00am today. Why? Because I leave town at 9:30 for a funeral out of town and I'll be gone until tomorrow night.

I counter that with "I will be away next Tuesday and won't be near a computer"

Within the last day the BFI added Black Narcissus to the Big Screen Classics series for 4 screenings in March and April.

I'm posting this because it's listed as "Digital". The BFI site doesn't list any details about the dcp. I hope this is from a new 4k restoration. Black Narcissus turns 75 in April.

(BFI won't let me link directly to the movie or to the main whatson page for that matter. Had to deactivate the hyperlink.)

I suspect it isn't. For one, I would expect them to mention it and if it was a 4K DCP they'd list it as 'Digital 4K' rather than just Digital. Park Circus also only list it as a standard DCP.

But Criterion have managed to upgrade The Red Shoes without a 4K DCP being available so it's not necessarily relevant either way.

Maybe it's a good thing for me that the sale is not happening until next Tuesday (if it happens at all).

We completed our taxes yesterday and we owe a couple thousand more to the feds than we had predicted. The wife isn't happy.

A week of cooling off before a sudden $100 charge for movies might be beneficial.

I’m also hoping for the 8th. More because my calendar on the 1st sucks. No time to shop for movies until the late afternoon

Yeah, the recognized their original DVD/blu wasn't COOL enough and should've been even more blue. So yeah, the new release is 100% factually incorrect, which is a shame.

Full disclosure, I haven't upgraded to a 4K TV or player yet, but I do occasionally buy a 4K+BD set to future proof and have a new BD to watch now. Even when trying to assess BD quality though, I don't put a ton of value in screenshots and only occasionally look at them when directed to by a specific comment. So that said, why does this site even include them in 4K reviews, since they say they include virtually no useful information?

Quote:
Please note that the screencaptures from the 4K Blu-ray are downscaled to 1080p. Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc, including the actual color values of this content.

Rainy day here in nyc

Just came back from seeing The Hidden Fortress (1958) at The Film Forum. This is my favorite Kurosawa film, and one of my favorite films in general, so I was beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to finally see it in theaters. It was screened from a 35MM print, and it was a little rough compared to the restored BD from Criterion. There was obvious print damage, and some stabilization issues in the first 15 minutes or so, but then things got much better, and it looked mostly excellent for the rest of the film.

My ticket next to the booklet from Criterion BD

I've seen the film numerous times now, and it never gets old. Just a well-scripted, very entertaining, and often hilarious adventure film, complimented nicely by an excellent score, and another fantastic performance by Mifune. The movie has so many memorable scenes, but I especially love the Fire Festival part, where they're all dancing around the fire. I specifically took notice of the incredible choreography in the film, not just during that festival part, but also the various fighting scenes too. Kurosawa captures battle scenes like no other, and while this isn't a war movie per se, he still manages to throw in some great action scenes on horses, and a tense duel between Mifune's character, and another general.

sign above auditorium entrance.

I got to the theater about 20 minutes before showtime, which allowed me to hear some pretty entertaining banter from the crowd. One guy in particular said this: "For all the young people in the audience, I assume you're all aspiring filmmakers. Well there's no point stealing from this, it's already been done with Star Wars!"...and then a little while after he said this "I just want to let you know I have narcolepsy, especially during Kurosawa movies, so if I fall asleep just give me a tap on the shoulder" to which others in the crowd murmured "I hope he's joking".. New York City folks, you gotta love it. Once the movie started though, everyone was fully into it, laughing at the right times, and applauding at the end. It was a great experience, and I'll be going back again to see another Mifune film later this week.
