Which is one of the things that will always make them tops in my book.

I get why some people want to scream about 4K or some better extra on a different boutique label... but unless the customer service is great too, they lose points in my eyes no matter how good a release is supposed to be. Because if you encounter a problem, that higher quality is hard to take advantage of.

Criterion replaces things years later. Almost no one else would match that.

Any thoughts on the Agnes Varda collection? Thinking about getting it the next Criterion sale in July.

You should ask Jane Birkin, I heard she recently acquired a copy.

If you like her work, it's a no-brainer. The wealth of supplemental material is amazing, all of it touched with her unique wit and insight. The book is also excellent and even includes a large section devoted to her visual art.

Jean Renoir's 'The Rules of the Game' will be getting a 4K UHD in France. Since it's likely that they will be using the new 4K restoration that Criterion had been involved in, I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion were going to release a 4K UHD themselves.

If Jean Eustache's work finally comes to disc, Blu-ray.com is gonna have to amend their rules.

Idk if it’s been posted yet, but there’s a new restoration of I Know Where I’m Going that Janus was involved in. So that should definitely be getting a Criterion.

Seems like StudioCanal has announced a 4K UHD of Luis Bunuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise (1972). Hoping Criterion will actually re-release this as a 4K UHD as well so that the older HD master done probably around 2000 doesn't become the best looking presentation in the US for years to come.

Those who haven't seen this yet, I highly encourage you to add this to your watchlist as I, personally, consider this to be one of the few (yet truly) essential titles in Criterion's lineup of classic movies.

The life’s work of one of the greatest directors ever. A Criterion MVP! Agnes forever!

It’s a beautiful, lovingly compiled set that she herself collaborated with Criterion on in her (very active & energetic) final years.

Yeah, it's been mentioned. There's still time to watch the 24-hour premiere of the new restoration at the Film Foundation online screening room, incidentally:

Thanks for the heads-up about this, started watching it 30 mins ago, and I'm really enjoying it so far (taking a bathroom break). Hopefully others see this before it expires. The restoration looks very nice. The screening room is okay, though there's an X to close the screening in the top right corner that plays during the movie. Not sure if that's just the software, or a browser thing. Not really distracting when I'm watching the film though.

Itching for more Kiyoshi Kurosawa, so I join Duke in demanding Criterion release Cure sooner, rather than later!

I'm guessing we'll get that in October so July announcements? Still, with Criterion nothing is ever predictable. I'll take it sooner than that for sure, but hopefully not later.

ICYMI, Eureka just announced that their version of Medium Cool is now OOP. While I know they're different territories and licenses, just to be on the safe side, I would advise that anyone who wants the title should plan accordingly and buy the Criterion version as soon as possible.
Remember that the same thing happened with another Paramount license, Harold and Maude and shortly after Criterion's version went OOP as well.

Is this print different from the one on the Criterion Channel? I want to see it but I would prefer to watch it on a TV and with CC which the virtual room doesn't have.

Yeah it is, it's a new restoration while the channel one is a little dated. I could probably do a couple comparison screenshots between them. The Channel stream is still fine, and who knows, perhaps it'll be replaced with the newer restoration eventually.

edit: Here's some comparison shots between them. I just eyeballed it, so it's not perfect. It looks like they're going to be showing it again tomorrow. Before the film, there's also a great ~4 minute intro from Scorsese, so even if you decide to watch it via the Criterion Channel, you should still check out the intro if you can. There's some other vids too including a conversation between Joanna Hogg and Scorsese, and some interviews including one from Tilda Swinton (haven't seen those yet).

Some restoration details:

Quote:
Restoration Details
The Film Foundation and the BFI National Archive completed the 4K restoration of I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING! utilizing the original nitrate camera negative. A nitrate print and two nitrate fine grain negatives were also referenced: individual shots that had been cut from the original negative were present in the other prints, and reel 10 has now been returned to its original length by the inclusion of a second dissolve. Soundtrack reconstruction was completed in parallel. This was especially needed because much of the original sound negative had been replaced by poor quality duplicate material in the past. The result is a restoration of Powell and Pressburger’s beloved film that returns it to its full glory.

Restoration Credits
Restored by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation in association with ITV. Restoration funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation. Additional support provided by Matt Spick.

Unfortunate that the old Criterion titles that haven't been upgraded and been DVDs only since the beginning still go for $39.99 MSRP. Just revisited The Ruling Class (1972) today for its 50th anniversary and was surprised it still goes for the same price as a new Criterion Blu-ray would at the moment. But to be honest, I doubt the idea that a lot of people want a restored version of the film since it's not for everyone.

I bought that completely blind years ago when it was mispriced or something and absolutely loved it! Such a great film.
