From some users on Criterionforum who were able to watch the new restoration:

Quote:
The film was preceded by text explaining that the restoration was still a work in progress and that grading wasn't final, but it looked pretty good to me. Certainly no traces of Ritrovato's trademark yellow. The color timing is being carried out under the supervision of Bruno Nyutten, for some reason.
Quote:
I was at the same screening, and concur - there were a couple of moments where I hope we weren’t seeing the final versions of individual shots, but for the most part it looked superb.

Given Criterion's vast catalogue, why is their closet so tiny? Let's hope a 350-pound auteur director doesn't come on the scene because he will not fit in that tiny closet. Or someone with closet phobia.

It's a tiny room

It's not a closet unless it feels close.

Do any of my fellow Canadians know if B&N will ship to us this sale? Haven't been terribly impressed with Unobstructed View.

I attempted to place an order with B&N last year but the Criterion items in my cart were denied.

I needed to order from UV.

I'm not sure what the reason was why they stopped shipping Criterions to Canada. I thought I read it was somehow shipping cost related due to Covid.

Personally, I really hate UV as a reseller. so I ordered from Amazon.com. With currency exchange, customs, and shipping it pretty much matched UV pricing.

Amazon US has started lowering their Criterion prices.

So Imprint will be releasing Dersu Uzala. Criterion was restoring this for years, but remember having some issues along the way. So, is Imprint using Criterion's work or something else entirely?

During the last Criterion 50% off sale in November, I remember commenting that as a Canadian it cost me less to import them from Amazon US than it did to buy them from Unobstructed View. Looks like that's still the case for this sale.

Both Criterion and Imprint used the same restoration for War of the Worlds. Other than that, Imprint has used older masters compared to US releases, in cases like Breakdown and The Dead Zone.

Don't expect it.

Saw this in New York ages ago and can barely remember it. It's in Russian, right?

Does anyone know if Barnes and Noble stores are accepting memberships for an extra 10% off Criterion during this year’s sale?

Yes. Funded by the Soviets when Kurosawa couldn't get anyone else to give him money for a movie after the financial failure of Dodesk'da-den.

He got to make whatever he wanted as long as it was based on a Russian source.

Just got a Criterion email that the 50% sale is now on at B&N.

Have fun, collectors!

I usually try to buy everything during the Criterion one day 50% off sales. Criterion makes more money with those sales (no middle man) and I get points. But I really want to get Shaft UHD. And, not surprisingly, Amazon has matched the 50% off sale. And at Amazon, using an Amazon Visa, I get 5% back. Not a lot, but it all adds up. The best part? I just ordered it and delivery is guaranteed tomorrow.
