Why would you feel the need to do that? Does your current disc somehow become obsolete because it doesn't feature Criterion's logo on it?

If a Criterion ends up having DV, then maybe, yes. Otherwise, no. Over half the time, I'm generally content with a more barebones release of a film so long as the video quality isn't inferior.

Agreed about the saturation point. The only two films in the TSPDT Top 100 still MIA on blu-ray in the US or UK are Greed and Viridiana. What's a typical "Criterion title" many of us have heard of that hasn't yet been released by them or a comparable party, such as Arrow or BFI, that's still demanding better home video treatment? Jean Eustache's La Mama et La Putain maybe? Viridiana too of course. Maybe Los Olvidados. Needless to say, other labels like Kino, Arrow, and the like are now competing with Criterion for the rights to a lot of these "bread and butter classics". Look at all the films Criterion released on DVD that went to Kino for blu-ray and that CC released on blu-ray and that went to KL, yet again, for UHD.

There's a noticeable difference in the Japanese output because Toho seems to be playing hardball with the Kurosawa movies. Godzilla movies aside, has Toho licensed to Criterion since the Ikiru release?

Criterion's first 50 Laserdisc releases:
As you can see, the overwhelming majority has been released by Criterion on Blu-ray already. Some of those will likely become 4K releases down the road. Of the first 50, just two are Japanese films. The whole going back to their roots argument kind of falls flat here. |

According to a user on Criterionforum, it looks like Criterion/Janus have the rights to another HK action classic:

Damn. While this is great news, the bad news is that it could be forever before they release it. Eastern Condors outside of the John Woo films is my favorite 80's HK film.

Also, makes me wonder if they got the other two films that were in the Sammo Hung 3 film collection that Eureka put out?

I'm pretty late here in my reaction... but the October releases are solid in my view. There's nothing to complain about here. Any time there's a David Lynch film included in the announcements is a win-win.
Overall, excellent month! P.S. Also, is it a coincidence that 3 of the 6 films announced here were all released in the year 1997? They're getting their 25th anniversary releases! Last edited by jw007; 07-19-2022 at 04:30 PM. |

Also, I just wanted to add that exactly 10 years ago I joined this forum (July 2012), and here I am in July 2022 still alive and still a Criterion lover.
