Why would you feel the need to do that? Does your current disc somehow become obsolete because it doesn't feature Criterion's logo on it?

What would the cover art look like for a Scorsese at WB set?

If a Criterion ends up having DV, then maybe, yes. Otherwise, no. Over half the time, I'm generally content with a more barebones release of a film so long as the video quality isn't inferior.

If the boxset ends up the only way to get some of the others, then it makes sense.

Also, times change. I love discovering films that become classics to me as well. I can't believe I hadn't seen Mississippi Masala, for example, but I'm totally in love with it now.
What I mean by classic would be their bread and butter library from the laser disc and early DVD days. All the stuff they started releasing when getting into blu ray and suddenly took a hard break from starting around 6 or so years ago. They release them in a drip drip now. Agreed on Mississippi Masala though. I'd somehow not even heard of it.

Agreed about the saturation point. The only two films in the TSPDT Top 100 still MIA on blu-ray in the US or UK are Greed and Viridiana. What's a typical "Criterion title" many of us have heard of that hasn't yet been released by them or a comparable party, such as Arrow or BFI, that's still demanding better home video treatment? Jean Eustache's La Mama et La Putain maybe? Viridiana too of course. Maybe Los Olvidados. Needless to say, other labels like Kino, Arrow, and the like are now competing with Criterion for the rights to a lot of these "bread and butter classics". Look at all the films Criterion released on DVD that went to Kino for blu-ray and that CC released on blu-ray and that went to KL, yet again, for UHD.

Nearly all of their early Laserdisc releases have been put out on Blu-ray, and some now upgraded to 4K by Criterion, save for some major titles where the studio released it themselves. You seem to be overinflate how many Japanese films were put out in those days as well. It was hardly their bread and butter.

There's a noticeable difference in the Japanese output because Toho seems to be playing hardball with the Kurosawa movies. Godzilla movies aside, has Toho licensed to Criterion since the Ikiru release?

Criterion's first 50 Laserdisc releases:
  1. Citizen Kane - Released in 4K by CC
  2. King Kong - Studio released it (some murmurs of CC getting it back, but nothing reliable)
  3. The 39 Steps - Released on BD by CC
  4. The Lady Vanishes - Released on BD by CC
  5. The Third Man - Released on BD by CC (OOP, but they may have gotten it back)
  6. Swing Time - Released on BD by CC
  7. High Noon - Released by Olive
  8. Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Released by Olive
  9. The Magnificent Ambersons - Released on BD by CC
  10. The Seventh Seal - Released on BD by CC
  11. The Hidden Fortress - Released on BD by CC
  12. The Red Balloon and White Mane -
  13. Lola Montès - Released on BD by CC
  14. Black Orpheus - Released on BD by CC
  15. Shock Corridor - Released on BD by CC
  16. Help! - Studio released it
  17. The Graduate - Released on BD by CC (4K probably coming)
  18. It's a Wonderful Life - Studio released it
  19. Blade Runner - Studio released it
  20. A Hard Day's Night - Released in 4K by CC
  21. Monsieur Hulot's Holiday - Released on BD by CC
  22. Sabotage -
  23. Secret Agent
  24. Young and Innocent
  25. Grand Illusion - Studio released it (CC may have gotten it back)
  26. The Asphalt Jungle - Released on BD by CC
  27. 12 Angry Men - Released on BD by CC (Kino got 4K)
  28. The Night of the Hunter - Released on BD by CC (Kino got 4K)
  29. La Strada - Released on BD by CC
  30. Forbidden Games -
  31. A Night at the Opera - Studio released it
  32. Scaramouche
  33. Pygmalion
  34. Vengeance is Mine (open matte) - Released on BD by CC
  35. Fellini Satyricon - Released on BD by CC
  36. The Producers - Studio released it
  37. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - Released on BD by CC
  38. Black Narcissus - Released on BD by CC
  39. The Three Penny Opera
  40. The Princess Bride - Released on BD by CC
  41. Tunes of Glory - Released on BD by CC
  42. The Horse's Mouth
  43. Shoot the Piano Player
  44. Monterey Pop - Released on BD by CC
  45. Show Boat - Released on BD by CC
  46. North by Northwest - Studio released it
  47. Adam's Rib
  48. Blowup - Released on BD by CC
  49. Rashomon - Released on BD by CC
  50. The Rules of the Game - Released on BD by CC

As you can see, the overwhelming majority has been released by Criterion on Blu-ray already. Some of those will likely become 4K releases down the road. Of the first 50, just two are Japanese films. The whole going back to their roots argument kind of falls flat here.

So Criterion might release a Scorsese WB set? Hmm. Will be interesting to see if they release The Departed AND The Infernal Affairs trilogy.

According to a user on Criterionforum, it looks like Criterion/Janus have the rights to another HK action classic:

A film programmer friend has mentioned to me that apparently Janus Films now owns the rights to Sammo Hung’s Eastern Condors

Damn. While this is great news, the bad news is that it could be forever before they release it. Eastern Condors outside of the John Woo films is my favorite 80's HK film.

Also, makes me wonder if they got the other two films that were in the Sammo Hung 3 film collection that Eureka put out?

I'm pretty late here in my reaction... but the October releases are solid in my view. There's nothing to complain about here. Any time there's a David Lynch film included in the announcements is a win-win.

Overall, excellent month!

P.S. Also, is it a coincidence that 3 of the 6 films announced here were all released in the year 1997? They're getting their 25th anniversary releases!

Also, I just wanted to add that exactly 10 years ago I joined this forum (July 2012), and here I am in July 2022 still alive and still a Criterion lover.

Indeed. Ghosts come in many forms. Speaking of which, what's your favorite ghost story in the Criterion Collection? Mine is Kuroneko.
