You know I'm a little surprised of the amount of pre-code films that haven't been remastered.

Baby Face, Trouble in Paradise, etc.

Anybody know why? I would love to get these from Criterion.

IIRC, Trouble in Paradise recently got a restoration, so an upgrade from Criterion is hopefully not too far off. In terms of other Pre-Codes, I have to imagine that the state of the original elements for many films of that era are hit-or-miss. Baby Face would be a great release though! (I'm personally rooting for Red-Headed Woman)

Last sale items arrived in the mail from B&N. Now that the sale ended I am already missing going there over the past month lol. I just have no other reason to ever go.

Just picked up Le Cercle Rouge 4K and the disc looks like someone tried to skip it across the pavement. Even the top side of the disc is scratched.

Edit: my Pink Flamingo disc too. Unacceptable.

Same, same. Trouble In Paradise should’ve been upgraded years ago when the restoration was new.

Ugh that’s horrible…from my personal experience/anecdotal evidence, QC has gotten worse since the pandemic. Lately, I’ve received more discs with scratches and defects than mint ones. I also read people having mint looking discs that don’t play….so, that’s just great….Really annoying for a premium product….

I know QC has gone downhill across all companies to a certain extent, but it is only Criterion where I am hearing about these scratches...I have ordered dozens of movies from other companies and not one scratch.. So something is going on..

Several reports of scratched discs with Shout Factory releases..

It also happened with at least Kino's Touch of Evil release:

Toothpaste don't do jack. I still got two cavities AND my disc still didn't play

What's worse?

Having playback dropouts from a scratched blu-ray disc or pixelation and lost connection from streaming video?

At least with streaming video, we don't have to write letters to customer service about replacing the disc or returning it. We just try again with a better internet connection.

That being said, I still think 4k physical media has far better video quality than the fastest 4k streaming service today.

If I pop in a disc that I bought and paid for and it starts glitching because of scratches, that's a huge headache because I have to go through the hassle of getting it replaced. If it's something I'm watching on streaming, chances are I care about it less than something I've bought on disc so I can just deal with it or back out and try again.

I'm still hoping we get a surprise special announcement from Criterion anytime now, ahead of next week's regular November announcements (which I really, really hope are super), for a special treat of some kind for November... That's often the strongest month of the year for me...
