I actually didn't like that either because it provides a sort of justification for Max doing what he does. Having Sam be the target in the original just for doing the right thing, to me, is more frightening. |

A bit let down because I had really high expectations and we already knew Infernal Affairs was coming so that wasn't much of a surprise.
I'm happy their still fully supporting the 4K format though. I might get Malcolm X. Never seen In the Mood for Love but I'll consider it. |

Really surprised Infernal Affairs is just BD. I mean, I expected at least the first film to get a 4K disc as well.

Malcolm X on 4k is amazing but that cover art is underwhelming.

That’s why I’m holding off on buying it in case Criterion does the same thing to Wong Kar Wai set where they rerelease central films in 4K later individually.

I've set a few rules for myself to keep from going broke via UHD expenditures. Per Finch's list of UHDs on criterionforum.org, I'll only consider serial buying stuff if it's a reference disc. I'll buy "solid upgrades" of absolute favorites, and if the UHD is "disappointing" the 4K digital version on Apple TV will do just fine.
For "solid upgrades" of films I want to "check out" or that I want access to but don't necessarily worship I'll patiently wait until sites like the Criterion Channel offer 4K streaming. |

I'm actually super relieved to see In the Mood for Love 4K. I had this concern that Criterion might be hesitant to do solo 4K releases of movies from box sets, so this Hopefully we get some from the Fellini and Bergman sets down the line too.

It's available on UHD here in France, as well. I don't know how much of an improvement if any, encode wise, the Criterion will be. If not, I'll just wait for a price drop on the French disc.

"Malcolm X" is Lee's masterpiece. My Best Picture choice in 1992, and in my Top Ten for all the 90s. But, I too am happy with my Warner blu book release. The 4K won't do me any good, as I haven't gone that way, yet. And this blu I have is fine like it is.

Well The Seventh Seal is the only Bergman film that currently has a 4K master, and it already has an excellent UHD from BFI. Perhaps 8 1/2 could get a UHD if Criterion determine it would be a substantial enough improvement over the boxset blu-ray.

I've been considering upgrading my DVD of Infernal Affairs for a while. But, I'm not exactly gaga over it, have considered just giving it away, and the used market is surprisingly tight.
I find it ironic that I could now get the entire trilogy, restored, for the same price (during a sale) as it would have cost me to get the old Blu-ray used. I've never seen the sequels, so maybe... |

I think I’m more angry about In the Mood for Love UHD happening after being repeatedly told they didn’t see any benefit to UHD upgrade any of the WKW set. I feel like that’s the official opening of the floodgate. I guess that set is absolutely going to be made irrelevant over time. Why bother buying any blu-rays from Criterion then? Should I buy Infernal Affairs trilogy? Should I buy Cure? Should I buy Eve’s Bayou? I just don’t know anymore. I really don’t. So I guess nothing for me this month? Maybe, probably. Shrug.
