Werckmeister Harmonies is still my pick for greatest film of the 21st(?) century.

Exciting to hear Janus may have secured NA rights. Although Arbelos did marvelous restoration jobs on both Sátántangó and Damnation. Probably can't go wrong in either studio's hands.

Let's hope it makes it to disc soon!

Was there ever any actual evidence that Criterion would eventually release After Hours or is it just a wishlist item for people because it's unreleased and they have such a good relationship with Scorsese?

It’s mostly speculation. On a podcast, someone asked George Feltenstein about a series of titles possibly being released on blu-ray thru WAC, and After Hours was one of the movies mentioned. He responded that some of the films in question were already promised to the most prestigious boutique label out there, which surely meant Criterion.

Janus added a page for Au hasard Balthazar. I guess they never owned the NA rights to it until now?

Last month, I met Schultz in New York at the offices of the Criterion Collection, which in December will release a remastered special edition of “Cooley High” — a coming-of-age drama set in the 1960s at a school in Chicago. Schultz is slim and energetic, with an easygoing manner and a guitar-pick-shaped face framed by wavy silver hair. In a darkened editing suite, he directed a sound engineer to raise the soundtrack of a pivotal scene by four decibels.

“I wanted to make sure that people can hear it,” he said. “They’re going to be watching at home, and all kinds of stuff is happening at home.”

I'd imagine Werckmeister Harmonies would receive a UHD if Criterion has plans to release it on disc. It would get a UHD because it's the right move (Regardless of how niche the movie might be.).

The National Film Archive of India has posted on Facebook about ther 4K restoration of Satyajit Ray's The Chess Players (Shatranj ke Khiladi). The video restoration has been done by Prasad Corp who have handled a number of projects for Criterion.
https://www.facebook.com/nfaiofficia...zSorcUJad41KCl

Quote:
The 4K restoration of Satyajit Ray's classic Shatranj Ke Khilari had its world premiere on 2nd September at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. The restoration was screened in the Venice Classics Section. The film has been restored under the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM), a project undertaken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. The restoration was done by NFDC- National Film Archive of India from the original camera negative, which the producer of the film, Suresh Jindal, had deposited in NFAI for long-term preservation. Famed cinematographer, Mr. Sudeep Chatterjee, had supervised the grading. The picture restoration was done by Prasad Corporation and the Audio restoration by Cameo Digital System.
MD NFDC and Director NFAI, Mr. Ravinder Bhakar introduced the film to a packed audience in Venice. It was the second time this year when a restoration by NFDC-NFAI was shown at a major International Film Festival, as earlier in May, another Ray classic, Pratidwandi, premiered in the restored format at Cannes. The team at NFDC-NFAI is ensuring the highest standards while performing the restoration, thus prompting multiple International Festivals to screen the restorations of these Indian films in their respective classics section. Only a handful of films from around the world are being shown in Venice Classics this year, and Shatranj Ke Khilari is one of them.
The restoration of films under NFHM is the world's largest project of its kind. Thousands of features, documentaries and shorts will be restored in coming years by NFDC-NFAI. Newly restored films by more prominent Indian directors apart from Ray will soon be made accessible to the audience both domestic and international.

This should be an improvement on the Artificial Eye DVD! Though I’d like to see Criterion releasing more Indian films than just Satyajit Ray (though plenty of his films deserve Blu-rays, perhaps even a boxset.)

I'm back home from seeing Akira Kurosawa's Ran at the Paris Theater here in NYC. I was actually going to go see it yesterday, which would have cost $16, but when I visited the site I found out they were now participants of National Cinema Day, so I got to see it for just $3.00! This was my first time visiting the Paris Theater, which is the only remaining single-screen theater in the city. Its located right in the heart of 5th Avenue too, across the street from the famous Plaza Hotel, around the corner from luxury shops like Bergdorf Goodman, and Tiffany's and many others The theater had actually closed down in 2019, but thankfully Netflix came to its rescue and saved it. The theater is pretty nice, with traditional red velvet auditorium-style seating. There's also a balcony level, which I will have to try the next time I visit.

Seeing Ran in theaters was such an incredible experience. The epic scale of this film benefits from seeing it on the biggest screen possible. Hearing the film's booming score, with its haunting drums, gunfire, and hoofbeats added as much to the experience for me as its visuals. Like Throne of Blood, it manages to completely transport Shakesepeare's work into a Japanese setting. Its battle scenes are some of the greatest on film, and Tatsuya Nakadai gives one of the best performances of his impressive (and still ongoing) acting career. It is a masterpiece created by a legend, whom at the age of 75 already had a full career of masterpieces behind him.

Looks like it's called Paris, but Pants isn't bad sounding either.

Sign looks like Pants or Parts. I wonder if this place was around in 2008? Can’t believe I missed it if it was.

I thought Mirandy July's Kajillionaire (2020) might get a Criterion release, but Universal has just announced for bluray for October 25th.

Still glad it's getting a bluray release at all though (it had been DVD-only for a whil), will be picking it up.

Hoping Never Rarely Sometimes Always is next, that one deserves the upgrade, and it's similar to Kajillionaire in a lot of ways (Sundance 2020 hit, theatrical release impacted by COVID, Focus Features distribution, indie director darlings, etc)

I've only been there once as well - in 2007 (which I believe was my first visit to NYC) when I saw a film called 'Starting Out in the Evening'.

I was really surprised how packed it was for such a small film but it was a great experience. I sat in the balcony middle and had a really good view of the screen. I read they installed new seats. That's good because I do remember them being very uncomfortable.

Yeah, Netflix did a number of updates to the theater after acquiring it. The seats are comfortable, though me being ~6'3", I didn't have a lot of legroom as compared to modern theaters. There's cupholders on the back of the seats in front of you too, but after some initial adjustments, I was perfectly fine the whole movie.

Here's a random shot of the seats I took:

Another thing I really liked about the experience, and it's a small thing, but they had a red curtain that opened for the previews. And then it closed again briefly, before opening again to show the film. There's something magical and nostalgic about that reveal when the curtains part in a darkened theater, and the film begins.

I liked Hittman's first couple movies okay, but never understood the praise for NRSA. Even if the girl had no idea about judicial bypass laws in Pennsylvania, she could have easily gone to a Planned Parenthood and they would've assisted her. There are two locations within 50 miles of her city.

I'd gladly take some Larry Cark though, but I don't think they're up CC's alley.
