Let's just agree that all his movies that aren't named The Brothers Grimm are great (why, Heath, why?!).

A word of warning to the unfamiliar:

You will NEVER, and I mean NEVER, ever, get that closing song to "Epidemic" out of your head. Years later, I'd find myself going, "Epidemic! We All Fall Down! Epidemic!"

It's like that "The Kingdom" theme... "King-DOM!"

I'd be greatly interested to see that mythical extended cut. I really get the sense that it would be greatly improved.

I doubt it. Weinstein interfered with virtually every aspect of production and Gilliam didn't have it in him to try.

Does anyone know the chance of Criterion releasing more Edward Yang? Specifically, Mahjong & A Confucian Confusion!

Imprint is actually the label that's been wowing me, lately.

In just the past few months, I've bought "One False Move", "Dersu Uzala", "Barfly", "Pretty Baby", and "Burn!" from them. On top of already getting "The Duellists", "Hard Eight", "Drugstore Cowboy", and a number of others.

I used to buy tons of Criterions, too.

But I keep being consistently disappointed all the time by them.

That stuff Imprint is releasing is the kind of thing Criterion should be releasing, just in better technical quality.
Thank god for Imprint. Burn! will be mine

Imprint's title selection is great, but man technically they're barely a step up from Mill Creek. Dated masters and even inexplicable interlaced looking crap like Body Parts. Have they gotten better in the last year?

Agreed. I’m a huge Gilliam fan and it’s good to see they haven’t been scared off by Von Trier’s history...yet

The LvT set is one I’m most excited by today, but I’ll be buying the Baron again. And I’ll take Brazil, Fear & Loathing, Fisher King, and Time Bandits too, please.

The Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog, Red Beard, and many others. Again, it feels like a boxset is coming, but we have been saying that for YEARS at this point. I really wish we had a Criterion insider like we have a Kino one, just so we could have an understanding of some of their decisions.
I think it must be Toho's fault. The films you've mentioned haven't been released in blu-ray anywhere in the world, as far as I know.

All have been released in Japan and outside of Japan. The Bad Sleep Well in France, Red Beard in Germany, Stray Dog in France, etc. I'm sure Toho is hard to deal with, but Criterion seems to have a pretty good relationship with them.

Nothing really doing it for me this time around, but happy if it's the opposite for you.

Echo the sentiments on Imprint. Some decent titles, even if the quality is variable. Have a few now, and just pre-ordered Fear is the Key.

As mentioned above, they've all been released, and the scans look pretty good. Also a lot of the bigger titles have even had new 4K scans. Movies like Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Jojimbo, Sanjuro, and I think also Kagemusha.

Basically Criterion is so far behind when it comes to Akira Kurosawa releases that I think it can only be resolved by releasing a box. Presumably will use the new 4k scans on blu rays, or maybe even a few 4K's who knows.

Something odd is for sure going on with the Kurosawa titles as this is beyond strange for Criterion to go nearly 7 years without releasing one of his films. Again beyond strange. We all have assumed it's because of a boxset, and we are probably right, but the question remains as to how far out it is? Could be a a few months, to a few years, to a decade. Who knows.

Again, I wish they did some podcast or someway to actually get some vague answers out of them, or something more concrete to how the KL insider interacts with us. We are pretty lucky to have them, but would be great to have one for Criterion, or Shout, etc.

I feel your pain. I fought hard to not purchase the Sony release over the years. Came close a couple of times. So glad we're finally get it though and in 4K!

Curious about the aspect ratio. The LaserDisc had the European AR of 1.75:1

The January titles are growing on me.

At first I was confused about Bergman Island as I thought it was an upgrade of the Marie Nyreröd documentary also entitled Bergman Island. Now I see this is a feature film that was released last year, so I definitely need to watch that now.

Though I'm not a big fan of Lars Von Trier, this Europe trilogy intrigues me nonetheless. I haven't seen any of the three films, so I'm going to try and add these to my watch list as well.

I always welcome any Terry Gilliam to the collection, and the The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is one I'll look into purchasing during next year's sales.

Imitation of Life and This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection don't appeal to me so much however, but its nice to see some variety here.

Overall, a fairly solid month to start off 2023!
