I always thought the closet was kind of a waste. Sure, it's cool to hear what the celebs have to say about titles, but it doesn't in any way influence me. I've said this before, but they should run a contest once a year and let a "regular" person go in with a small bag. They can still make a video of it. Would make it more interesting for us film fans, I think.

Barry Jenkins video 100% influenced my decision to purchase Ratcatcher. Listening to him passionately speak about the film and it's influence on him had me sold. Not the first time it's happened and probably won't be the last. Oh, and I loved the movie. Fantastic blind buy.

Same. Added LETTER NEVER SENT to my shopping bag - always been on my to watch list but Cate Blanchett being super enthusiastic about it made me click order.

Never thought the closet videos could inspire so much contempt. I just enjoy listening to stars and filmmakers talk about movies, their tastes and preferences. It's not about influencing what I buy.

They probably stock the closet with factory rejects and damaged copies anyway.

How are you this unaware of celebrity endorsement being used as a marketing tool by companies in order to generate more interest in the company? This is literally basic marketing. I'm also sure that there are a lot of people who want to hear their favourite directors and actors talk about the films that inspire them, so I don't really see what the problem is here. At this point, you're just complaining for the sake of complaining, especially for something so trivial.

The Cate Blanchett / Field vid has generated 138K views in less than a week, and that's just Youtube. It's not purely about the titles that these famous people are recommending in the videos themselves, but the overall branding perception that Criterion has garnered with these videos. They've made a plainly designed closet filled with movies into something that can be marketed, and trend on social media. That absolutely helps expand their branding, especially to some that may not have even been that familiar with their company prior to such a video. And of course the celebrities themselves are often also marketing whatever project they're doing as well, and these videos also help with that as well (in this case, the film Tár..

"They should focus solely on QC and stop posting these top 10 lists to their site, as it would lower the costs of internet bandwidth. So Pablo Larrain, the Safdie Brothers, Kelly Reichardt et al doing a top 10 list influences your buying? Okay."

This would be very cool. Imagine how many movies the average person could grab in 30 seconds.

Criterion would need to add a wind element to make things interesting:

If they took down their website, they could do 3-5 more 4k releases a year!

If they released 2-3 fewer titles a month, that would free up the budget to release a lot more titles

Not me. I have over 200 CC discs and I’d still hit that closet like a loose dog at a picnic.

My Criterion wishlist has tripled in size because of the closet videos. Now whether that translates to purchases remains to be seen. Stay tuned for the next sale.

Yeah, the closet videos have inspired me to check out movies. Sometimes hearing someone who makes stuff I like talking about something that inspired them is way more interesting than reading a plot description on the Criterion website.

I almost never take advantage of the Criterion sale.

Should "The Power of the Dog" (releasing Nov. 8th), be a part of this sale?
