With the exception of The Hawks and the Sparrows (Which I think the contrast boost makes it too bright), I think Criterion's transfer beats every other edition. I particularly like the color grading of his color films, which makes them more natural and healthier. The contrast in Accattone is a pretty strong upgrade as well. Really excited to own this set but I'll have the desire to buy the rest of his works (Besides Comizi d'Amore, I have seen his Trilogy of Life and Salo). I'll have to get my hands on The Witches anthology as well

I do recall Salo having a 4K restoration, but I heard that the color grading was pretty bad on that. Don't know if I want to wait on that one or just go for the current edition.

Obviously fake. Criterion would never release a 4k UHD, there will never be enough demand for such a tiny quality boost.

Maybe he's got dibs on a Kurosawa box set too. Maybe he's in cahoots with Toho.

Wow. I just watched Celine Sciamma's "Petite Maman". What a sweet and beautiful little film.

On my list for the July B&N sale, eager to see it. Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire made my top ten for the 2010s near the top and I found Tomboy to be a wonderful film as well. She has this incredible talent for approaching often polarizing subject matter concerning gender and sexuality in a way that is universally relatable. Even this straight cis guy somehow got a little dust in his eyes by the end of Portrait.

Happy 100th Birthday to my favorite director:

There are still a handful of his works that should get a Blu-ray release, and some of those movies need them at least in the US (Youth of the Beast should definitely get one). A few others like Kanto Wanderer looks pretty bad in terms of DVD quality.

Default Kenneth Anger

RIP Kenneth Anger, 96, film director, writer, madman of the avant garde. Here’s hoping his final book, HOLLYWOOD BABYLON 3, finally avoids the net of Tom Cruise/Scientology legal mayhem and gets published. I saw many of his early films such as Scorpio Rising, Lucifer Rising, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, & Fireworks in various underground theaters in NYC in the mid 60s, but he’d been around forever. Big influence on Andy Warhol, among others. To my knowledge the only label carrying his DVDs is Fantoma (a 2 volume set), but sadly no Blu-ray’s exist. He’d be a perfect fit for Criterion. Give it up for the original Wild Man Fischer of the art world. There might never be another quite like him.
