Grabbed Revanche as a blind buy after seeing it recommended in here. What a pleasant surprise, such a great movie.

I'm still blowing up their emails. If enough people raised hell about The Third Man maybe they'd work out some form of a deal. They have to have at least a thousand OOP titles by now (all LDs, most DVDs, probably more Eclipse titles than we know, all Merchant Ivory titles sans A Room With A View (and all of the MI DVDs), and several box sets), and The Third Man is probably in the top ten of titles fans want back.

I would've just made the current (if you can call it that) Blu my movie purchase of the month, except that you're lucky to find it at a decent price. I recently rounded up several tapes that never made the jump to DVD, and the combined total was cheaper than any copy of The Third Man I could find.

Does anyone know if the standard Blus in the Three Colors 4K are remastered, or the same Blu-ray discs as before?

They are the same as the old Blus. Criterion has stated that anytime they update an existing title to 4K, the included Blus will be from the older release. They've stuck with that, with only a couple exceptions.

Now I never knew they made an official statement on this. That's good to know. It will keep me from double buying in case I want certain features, soundtracks, transfers etc from an older release.

It's a shame they're not remastering the standard Blus though. That's kinda a WB move.

Probably giving the option to people who don't like film-maker revisions on newer 4K resto's

I snagged the Criterion Blu for cheap at Walgreens around 2012.

There are a slew of OOP Criterions I wish they could regain the rights to and release on 4K:

1. RAN
2. The Long Good Friday
3. The Man Who Fell to Earth
4. Nights of Cabiria
5. Z

And we need the rest of Kurosawa's films on Blu/4K, especially Dodes’ka-den and Red Beard.

Ran and MWFTE 4K's had got limited steelbook releases from Lionsgate in the US, but those appear to be OOP and they haven't issued any standard releases.

As I know, The Long Good Friday last had a 2K scan+resto circa 2015 done by Arrow, which was supervised by the DoP (who even took the opportunity to do some brightness/color correction for one of the scenes. If you're not region-locked that's a great option. Around the same time Arrow also restored Mona Lisa, the same master was licensed by Criterion for their 2021 release of the film.

Yeah unfortunately Ran and The Man Who Fell to Earth both had Best Buy 4K steelbooks that are now OOP. Your best luck is to find the British 4Ks, which will probably include a Region B disc as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if The Long Good Friday and Z gets an announcement sometime down the line. The Long Good Friday has been teased by Janus Films a few times in the past and they have a page for it.

As for Z, I don't know what really is the case with this film. Janus Films does NOT have a page for it, unfortunately, but it has always been on the Criterion Channel page and will most likely never get removed off of it. Let alone, the film is available to purchase digitally on iTunes and Amazon. The Confession is another Costa-Gavras title that has gone OOP but strangely enough, the digital is STILL available to purchase on Amazon. I have heard that film was removed randomly by the rights holder themselves and seems like it was something that Criterion will have no say in and probably won't be able to get it back anytime soon.

Nights of Cabiria has already been released via the Essential Fellini set. Unless if Criterion has any interest in releasing it separately, I think you best take chances with the set. Criterion hasn't done a lot of separate releases for boxset only titles which is why I suggest owning the set rather than waiting for a possible release.

As for the Kurosawa films, I am just gonna wait on them. No signs of a 4K restoration for the two you have mentioned but I do think there are good chances of a new restoration sometime down the line. Either way, we should be getting some Kurosawa 4Ks in the US soon. Probably not a boxset that everyone is so passionate for but better than nothing.

I want Criterion to get the rights to more Costa-Gavras films! Also a 4K of Z would make me a very happy camper!

One thing that people on the forum have been saying is that Toho, which owns many of the classic Kurosawa films, has become incredibly hard to deal with for licensing. The recent 4K releases of Kurosawa films outside of Japan are mainly those which have been licensed from other studios.

I've never gone to a physical B&N to look at Criterions. Always ordered stuff online.

I got the new Jackie Chan set from B&N online, and the packaging was damaged. So, I took it to a physical store, to see if they would exchange it, which they did.

I thought I'd just look through what they had. I ended up leaving with a $200+ stack. Actually seeing titles in person was not a good thing for my wallet.

Even worse, I realized after that I'd bought the Blu-ray version of a film, that has a 4K. So, I have to go back to exchange that. We'll see if I can get out of there without spending even more money.

Anyone know if the Freshman (the 1925 Harold Lloyd movie) ever got a regular release? I remember years ago there was talk that Criterion would release a non-digipack version but haven't heard anything since. It's the only silent movie as far as I know that received the digipack treatment, so it sticks out like a sore thumb.

On that note, we haven't gotten a new Lloyd from Criterion in a really long time, it's starting to be kind of annoying. Same with the last few Chaplin short films they own (the First National Films he made). I figured we'd have gotten those by now but still nothing. :/

I read this to my wife, who figured I was reading aloud my own confession and asked what I spent the $200 on.

You just gotta get her in on the fun. My wife got LA BAMBA and DAZED AND CONFUSED 4K. I got THE EUROPE TRILOGY, JACKIE CHAN box, and SHOAH.

Hoping tomorrow will be my last trip this month, but I highly doubt it. My only blind buy this November will be THE RANOWN WESTERNS.

I can see that too: "3 Short Films by Charles Chaplin". I'd buy that.

The only thing that gets me about the Chaplin Blu-rays is that they only have the rescores from the 60s and 70s, even when in many cases the original scores from the 20s and 30s survive.

I'm terrible at guessing the arthouse releases (though I'm hoping for Neko z Alenky). I have a feeling we are going to get a Golden Age of Hollywood release for January.

My hopes/predictions:

Gentleman Prefer Blondes
Mrs. Miniver
An Affair to Remember
Random Harvest
The Little Foxes
Flesh and the Devil
West Side Story
Top Hat
Baby Face
They Drive by Night
Tea and Sympathy
Sabrina
Imitation of Life
Stella Dallas
Blonde Bombshell
My Favorite Wife
Born to Kill
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
etc.
