I have not watched it yet. I recently watched the theatrical version, which was only my second viewing after seeing it when it was released. I felt that I needed to re-familiarize myself with the film before seeing the extended version. Apparently, Malick has described the extended cut as a kind of alternate/longer version of the story rather than a "director's cut" that is preferred over the theatrical version; he still thinks the theatrical one is the definitive cut. Anyway, I am intrigued by the longer version and will give it a look sometime in the near future.

I prefer the theatrical cut. The extended cut is still magical, but the added stuff that gives it the extra 40 minutes doesn't actually contribute to the overall film in material ways. It largely just feels extra. I feel the same about all of his extended cuts, mostly The New World. I prefer the shorter cut as well.

A Hidden Life feels like an extended cut, and I wish he could go back and cut 30 minutes out for another alternate cut. Still great that makes me blubber like a baby, though.
