These Criterion 4k releases are no longer automatic purchases for me. The use of HDR is just too conservative for my taste. I am aware there’s an argument that HDR should be used sparingly to preserve the original look of the film, but when I pay $30 to upgrade a title and there’s only a subtle difference in the picture quality it’s hard to justify the expense.

I am not saying other’s opinions are wrong. It’s just where I am with things. I will still buy Criterion titles- just not with the same frequency as before. Criterion has been my favorite label since I began collecting, but there’s a lot more competition for my dollars- and Arrow, Second Sight and other boutique labels are pushing the envelope a little further imo. I’m happy for those whose aesthetic runs to the more conservative side. I’m just stating my own preferences. I’ve learned a lot on these boards and respect those who disagree with me. This is just my take.

Every Criterion sale I've seen at Barnes & Noble lists the world of Wong Kar Wai as out of stock. Currently on AMZN for $239.88 I recently picked up Eros from Nova during their sale. If each film in the set was scanned in 4k, I'm wondering if we're going to get a release in actual 4k anytime soon?

As someone who purchased In The Mood For Love on blu-ray, the original boxset AND then In The Mood For Love on 4K... that'd be a hard pill to swallow.

Im a simple man. I just want them to release Chungking Express in 4k. They did do In The Mood For Love in 4k so every month I wait for it and every month Im left sad.

It does have a German 4k release but without English subs.

Probably not the whole boxset together (it would be very expensive even at 50% off), and not after the issues they had with discs on the BD box. It would make more sense for them to release individual titles in 4K. Maybe after they've put out at least the major individuals, they may do a 4K box, and in the process trigger collectors' anxiety in all their customers who plumped for the individual 4K's

There was somebody else who only took one. I can't remember who it was now because it was a while ago, but it was a famous director.

I have probably 30 reusable shopping bags and a duffel bag, so that closet would probably be empty if they let me into it.

That's actually a good thing if it means the director had a nice set of Criterion titles already in their collection!

Bad news for DukeTogo84, Janus Films has the rights to Kenji Misumi's Kiru, Ken, and Kenki . New 4K transfers will be playing MoMA at the End of March/start of April

Haha, I actually thought Radiance would get these in the US. Will we ever see these on disc now is the question. If so, probably won't be for awhile.

Maybe we'll see them on disc in the 2040s.

Maybe Criterion are collectors like us (with our giant backlogs of unwatched films) - only it’s film rights they collect

I wouldn't put that past Spike Lee.

Spike Lee has 3 movies in the collection. So even if he just grabbed his that would be three movies he grabbed. But as far as I know he never did a closet video, yet. So none of it matters.

If you're using HDR to make something candy-colored for the sake of the showy saturation boost, it kinda invalidates the whole point of the project. Now, if they did their job so well that there's only a slight difference between editions, absolutely and go with God. There are a good number of titles I didn't upgrade even WITH HDR. But the proper use of HDR is capturing something that wasn't available before - the original dynamic range of film.

(For me, 4k has two aspects - HDR, which is great, but also texture. The first one, sometimes BD gets pretty close. With the latter? UHD with a good bitrate absolutely smokes a BD transfer. Like, Shaft and The Last Waltz were *transformative* experiences bc of how the film grain was rendered into something that felt like a genuinely celluloid presentation.)
