So after I finished watching Real Life last night great comedy by the way I watched the fantastic interview Criterion did with Albert Brooks, and well after the interview he mentioned Rob Reiner’s This is Spinal Tap at the end so that has me thinking. Is Criterion planning on putting out This Is Spinal Tap in 4K like they did with the Princess Bride? I honestly wouldn’t put it past them to put it out, and it would put a huge smile on my face.

This is very interesting so for my guesses for December here’s what I’m going with.

This is Spinal Tap 4K
Stray Dog Blu-Ray
The Bad Sleep Well Blu-Ray
Drunken Angel Blu-Ray
Alfred Hitchcock Box set since Studio Canal is doing a 10 film Blu-Ray box set I think Criterion might do one too and it will include Young and Innocent, Secret Agent, and Sabotage
Paris Texas 4K
The Time Masters 4K plus Blu-Ray
Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains Blu-Ray I think Criterion has this it feels incredibly up their alley plus more Laura Dern which Criterion has a lot of.
I don’t know about the Kurosawa stuff it may or may not happen this month anyway, but an Alfred Hitchcock box set is probably coming, and obviously Paris, Texas, and The Time Masters.

I have a feeling we're getting a lot of Hitchcock next year for the 100th anniversary of his first film. Probably a single release of The Pleasure Garden (with Easy Virtue as a bonus film), 4K and Blu of Spellbound, then maybe a collection of the rest of his 30s British films (Waltzes from Vienna, Secret Agent, Sabotage, and Young and Innocent).

Criterion really should do something like a 4K set of the four Selznick films, then an individual 4K combo of Spellbound. I'd happily re-buy Rebecca and Notorious in 4K.

Yes I have a strong feeling there's going to be a lot of Hitchcock next year including a box set. It's going to be great as a huge Hitchcock fan myself I'm really going to be looking forward to it.

I don't know. They've released 3 volumes of Hitchcock on 4k UHD over the last few years. I own all three.

UHD upgrades or completely new (to the Collection) films? Because there’s not a lot left that haven’t been released already.

I'm hoping we get those in 4K as well but unfortunately they are owned by Disney so who knows.

I’m thinking there’ll be upgrades of Young and Innocent, Secret Agent, and Sabotage on Blu-Ray and 4K as they did laserdiscs of all three back in the 90s. As well as, 4K upgrades of Notorious, Spellbound, Rebecca, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Lodger, and The Lady Vanishes. So basically both along with Blu-Rays that are new to the collection with the two remaining titles being Juno and the Paycock, and Pleasure Garden.

I notice Criterion rebranded their Youtube Channel to CRITERION. All caps. It was previously "criterioncollection"

It’s been like that for a few weeks now. I noticed because they have the theme song for The Blob posted and I saw it there. I wonder why they changed?

Yeah, it must have happened sometime in August as I looked at an archived page around the first week of August and it was the old way. I find the all caps to be too in your face, but I dont imagine this is a start of any company-wide rebranding, at least i hope not

I don't think it is I just think they decided to go with this logo as the old one is a bit dated plus they've been around since the laser disc days so they wanted to finally change the logo.

You’ve got a point there it’s very iconic as it’s on every release they’ve done starting with the laserdiscs.

I mean there are the two other designs from the DVD period, but the crooked C thing has really been around for an eternity, they kinda nailed it wit that one.

All they did was change to the C, so I think we’re “safe” whatever that means in this context.

I didn't intend for this to be a thing, as I was just pointing out a small observation, but I feel like people missed what I was referring to. The C has been there, but I was talking about the channel name being switched from "criterioncollection" to just CRITERION now. Not a big deal or anything. Companies do have a tendency to shorten and simplify their names (e.g., Apple Computer -> Apple, Kentucky Fried Chicken -> KFC, Dunkin Donuts -> Dunkin', etc..), so it'll be interesting to see if this kind of rebranding shows up elsewhere too.

I don't think this is any different than the website being at Criterion.com instead of Criterioncollection or, as it used to be, Criterionco.

The only thing I can think of is that it may have something to do with search engine optimization considering it was all one word previously. That or they just felt like it

Criterion aren't re-releasing a standalone BD in the US, and their M.O. has usually been to include the old BD with their 4K releases, so that UK BD may be the only way to get the 4K restoration on Blu-ray from Criterion.

It looks like Criterion are quietly re-releasing Godzilla on BD in the US as well on November 5th (same day as 4K release). There's a new listing up at importCDs. I assume it'll be in a plastic case like the UK release above.

https://www.importcds.com/godzilla/715515307215

A few days ago, I had emailed Criterion to inquire about that UK BD, and also whether the Blu-ray included with the US 4K would be from the new restoration, but unfortunately they confirmed it will be the old disc, which is typical with their 4K releases. It will be interesting to see if this new solo BD release has the new restoration, or if it's just a packaging change.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your interest! The upcoming 4K UHD + Blu-ray release of GODZILLA will include a new 4K digital restoration on the 4K UHD disc and the previous high-definition digital restoration on the Blu-ray disc. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Best,
Jon Mulvaney
Edit: I'm not sure if my email prompted this change, but I also now see that the Amazon UK listing has been updated, and they've gotten rid of the 4K wording. So, they're going to release it separately on Blu-ray in the UK using the old disc/transfer on the same day as the new 4K release ..I'd say this also more or less confirms the above US re-release will just be a packaging change too.
