I broke down and picked up Kagemusha. It's not my favorite Kurosawa (I would've preferred Ran), so I wasn't going to buy it, but I just couldn't pass up Kurosawa on Blu-ray. I also got Playtime as a blind buy. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to watch it soon to know if it was a good purchase.

I watched both Kagemusha and Playtime yesterday. Playtime has to be one of the best films I've seen in awhile. Mis-en-scene is out of this world.

Actually, I'm fine with the cover. The only thing about the cover that I do find a bit silly is the sub-heading of "and seven short films." I'll live, though. I mean... most of the time I'm just looking at the spines on my shelves anyway, right?

I'm not one of the self-proclaimed "Criterion elitists" that I find on certain other forums, so I'm pretty much down with whatever Criterion chooses to do. That's why I think I frequent this particular thread so often... because none of the 'regulars' in here come off as being too cocky or über-pretentious about these films. The only information I try to provide is from things I've come across on other forums or portions of the internet. Some people, though, in other places on the internet are just too much of an "elitist" to even consider enjoying films that aren't of the art-house, Criterion, Masters Of Cinema, New Yorker Films, MYA, underground circuit, etc. line of films, ya know? I always find it funny when these "film snobs" are typing about a particular film that they obviously don't enjoy but they feel the need to let everyone else know in parentheses that they don't... i.e. "I was over at my friend's house the other day to try and get them into some foreign films. Already playing on his tv was that Michael Bay travesty, "Transformers"(which I detest),..." And it goes on and on all the time. It just cracks me up.

A typical problem nowadays. Just as well as the fact, that I feel funny about my cousin's attempts to watch "independent, underground, elitist" European movies, pretending he likes and understands/appreciates them, while I can see he has not a clue what this is all about sometimes. This is the so-called PBS aka "Patrick Bateman Syndrome" - one has to do something not becuase they really have to do it, but because they feel this will let them "fit in" and "comply" with the "chosen ones" (simply, others).

all excellent points..... I find the acting in Transformers unbearable...... but I'm still buying it because it's chock full of action, and that part I enjoy..... gotta have variety!

There are many of the criterion films I simply don't enjoy, but I own them anyways, as I appreciate the film as an art.

I found it interesting however, when someone mentioned "Fat Girl" as a Criterion film not worth buying/seeing...... I actually really enjoy that one! Different strokes for different folks I guess.

A dirty little secret too......

[Show spoiler] I don't find In the Realm of the Senses to be a film I look forward to sitting down and watching..... however I do find it essential viewing because it provides a great story of a dynamic relationship, lifestyle, and subsequent ending of the relationship.... The general theme, although portrayed differently, is found in many "Love Stories"

Those elitists can be fun for a short while, but really get annoying when it's a longer period. I like all kinds of movies, so I shouldn't see why I couldn't enjoy a simpler action movie like Transformers (maybe a bad example as I didn't really like that one) or Iron Man or The Dark Knight or anything. Like Beta Man, I really need some variety. Every type of movie gets boring after a while, no matter what you're watching.

Kagemusha and Playtime both arrived today.... I might stay in tonight and do a "Double Feature"

Or I might go out, and pull a late night to watch Playtime!

A late night for the Beta Man is an early Sunday morning for the rest of us.

Mine have been setting there waiting to be moved to my new house as soon as my 10 day siege at work ends.

I'm watching my "Kagemusha" right now. Great stuff! It's my first time watching it, too, but I'll be watching it again, for sure. Last night, I watched "M. Hulot's Holiday" off of On Demand. So, either later today or tonight I'll be putting in "PlayTime."

Make sure to watch the documentary with Lucas and Speilberg. Pretty informative. And, of course, the It's Wonderful to Create feature is always a must.
I was saddened to see that it wasn't listed that way on the back of the package, just as a "41minute doc on the making of the film"

Not a proof, I know, but at least a realistic approach. By the way, what stops you from buying the same title from eBay?

Please pardon my tardy reply, nincollector - it's been a long week at work!
That site was given to me as a reference for that particular DVD, because it has a lot of details - I was just trying to verify if that Hard-Boiled Edition was intended for more than just the USA - all regions and the UK, specifically. (I moderate for a DVD Collection Program and that particular edition had been submitted to the UK DVD Database for approval)

Knowing that it can be difficult, depending on the film, to get rights to world-wide film-distribution can be difficult in many case - I was a little suspicious heh heh. But, I learn something everyday!
