Yep. I don't watch his films anymore and I don't care how much of a "genius" he was. That's one place and he's one person where I drew the line.

I'm hoping for Barry Lyndon on UHD since it's the 50th anniversary and Criterion already has a Blu-ray release.

Of course, and I think I made that point.

But I think we also know that there is a kind of "soft censorship" at play at a pragmatic Corporate level. You're unlikely to see calls for a ban on any film on these forums but there are absolutely campaigns on social media (which often bleeds into mainstream media) which create such a toxic whirl of misinformation that companies fear an impact on their bottom line.

I'm extremely pleased LAST TANGO IN PARIS is getting a 4k release but the fact that it's been relegated to Vinegar Syndrome's subsidiary labels and not a bells-and-whistles Criterion edition is quite telling. LTIP was, like it or not, a VERY big deal when it opened and the controversy both then and now deserved to be documented thoroughly as a vital piece of film and cultural history. So no, it's not been suppressed and thank god for that; but it's certainly being hushed and that's a shame, I think, as well as another footnote in an increasingly ominous text.

EDIT: As mentioned above, COME AND SEE (Klimov not Tarkovsky) is a great example of my own hypocrisy. I hate what happened there and yet I feel the film is so important and so effective as an anti-war statement that it's worth bearing that moment. But I couldn't blame anyone for not watching it on that basis. If they killed an animal today for as powerful a film, rather than just use CGI, I wouldn't give it a pass. But for me COME AND SEE is worth a thousand KHARTOUMs. Can't defend it, it's just my personal view. We all draw the lines in different places.

Tarkovsky had nothing to do with Come and See. Elem Klimov directed it.

Should we censor the speech of the social media campaigns?

Tarkovsky actually went to the location that day and did it just for fun, he was a real sicko like that. He could’ve visited his son or something in his one day back in the USSR from his “exile” but he chose cow-killing.

No, absolutely not. But Corporations should stop taking the bait. Social Media amplifies the most marginal voices (sometimes for the good) but attention spans are shorter than ever. It's the furnace of the Attention Economy - it will always need fuel but we can decide how, when and with what we feed it.

It really helps to know that depictions cruelty are fake. A simulated rape scene that serves the interests of the story can be fine. A real rape scene of course never is.

But even simulated cruelty can be distasteful and offensive if the point is only to titillate certain people who actually enjoy that kind of thing.

I also respect that people may be triggered even by simulated cruelty done with the best of intentions due to past trauma in their lives. (I have my own sensitivities... the details of which I do not want to get into here.)

That's a great and beautifully honest response but you lose me when you advocate censorship.

My Uncle was killed in a horrific road accident many years ago. At the time, UK TV showed quite horrific adverts about road safety, showing crash-test dummies being obliterated in slow-motion. It was difficult to sit and watch that with my family because our personal experience had sensitised us to the material. But would it have been right to call for a ban on those adverts?

We don't - we can't - legislate on the basis of the most sensitised members of the population. Grief and pain are a part of life and we can't and shouldn't try to block it out, however much we may want to. Not good for us personally and not good for Society in general.

EDIT: And they've announced BARRY LYNDON! So I'll shut up now.
