Of Malick's films, Days of Heaven is probably my least favorite, but I do love the incredible visuals. It's definitely not a bad movie, or I wouldn't have bought it.

Hey all, I just finished Akira Kurosawas "Ran".

Wow! Being new to Criterion film collecting and viewing, I feel as if I am being introduced to some truly remarkable and interesting films.

Please note: My review here contains spoilers and I am not sure how to do spoiler tags. If you do not want to read any details about the movie then please stop here.

As for my thoughts regarding the movie. I liked Ran quite a bit. The first two-thirds of the movie were completely engaging and I felt myself kind of feeling bad for the old man.

As the movie progresses, you learn that he really wasn't a good person at all and seemed to kill and destroy for personal gain and more power. When his sons turn against him and his dream (that he speaks of in the beginning) begins to unfold I found myself intrugued by where all of this would lead.

One of the surprising things in the film is him surviving that battle with arrows, gun shots, and flames all around him. When he walked out of the castle I half expected the armies below to bow to him as a god in amazement that he survived the brutal attack...but this doesn't happen. Instead, they give him respect, and let him pass through them unharmed any further.

I suppose, in a way, doing this ended up being more painful for him than death would have been at that point.

The brothers fighting amongst themselves for power didn't come as much of a shock though, and I really didn't like the girl who was running things with her cunning and deceptive ways. A fox indeed...

The third brother is the one I found the most interesting. Initially he came off as perhaps a bit jealous that he was the youngest, and did not inherit the kingdom. We learn to realize that ultimately, he was the only one that was really loyal to his father, no matter what happened in their relationship. That is quite admirable, IMO.

Anyway, I will sum up my "review" by giving it 3/4 stars. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is simply for the fact that I wasn't completely emotionally attached to a single character in the film. Maybe sue and her blind, flute playing brother, but they really weren't what I would consider main characters in the film. Although I did find the end to be quite satisfying and a nice conclusion to the story.

It's a theme of contrast for me, and fits perfectly.

I was blown away by the movie!
One of my favorites.

"The Thin Red Line" is on the way as said above!

Maybe I can connect better, because I have lived in Asia for quite some years.

regarding Ran.

the subtitle translation on the Criterion DVD is service-able, but studio canal's BD is awful. Saw a pristine 35mm film print w/theatrical subtitles and THAT was very well translated and packed an emotional wallop. brought the house down for those that watched it that night. for foreign films, if the subtitles aren't done well, it's hard to communicate all the visceral impact of what's going on, esp. w/Ran. really, wished the theatrical subs get carried over one day, it's a lot more literary.

&ofc, Dave, you knew that it was based on Shakespeare's King Lear yes? i think if you watch Ran after seeing/reading/knowing the Lear story, it is even more brilliant.

in Lear there were 3 daughters instead of sons. that's what's brilliant, making it sons and making it emotional, stroke of genius.

I thought the narration worked very well with her character and her relationships to those around her. But to each his or her own...

Finally received my Barnes & Noble orders of "Modern Times", "Charade" and
"Seven Samurai".

I watched "Charade" last night.
The first shot really scared the heck out of me, but then it luckily got better, but there was one problem that popped up from time to time that saddened me a little.

It's an issue also spotted by the reviewer at highdefdigest.com:

There seems to be some damage to the material used, as right around the 34:23 mark, the picture can temporarily darken and move slightly on screen, almost like it were being compressed briefly, for a few frames. This error only appears in this one scene, one shot that was used interspersed with a few cut-aways, but it is distracting nonetheless.

I noticed several times during the film, not just once, and it almost looks like compression artifacts you normally find on VCDs.

I just checked and at 34:23 it seems more like a print issue.

I spotted it at least 3 times:

1. At 19:25 mark
2. The one at 59:32 is the longest and most distracting

to lazy to find the third one.

Wasn't this the BD that was taken off Amazon.com for a while due to an error????

Please shed light on this if you can.

Overall, I'd rate Charade as follows:

Film: 4/5
PQ: 3 (first shots are awful. Film has a moderate level of grain throughout, but is littered with soft shots, many appear to be intentional as the mainly concern Andrey Hepburn close-ups. There is minor print damage, and some stability issues, but nothing too severe, except for the problems noted above.
AQ: 3,5 (OK)

Modern Times, which I have watched halfway through last night looks great.

Contrast is pitch perfect, detail is pleasing, grain acceptable and natural looking, and I only noticed a few hairs in some scenes.
I hope it looks this good all the way to the end!

I am very fond of the packaging of Seven Samurai. It looks fantastic to say the least, and two BDs makes it only sweeter.
Very nice indeed!

This. Despite some of the seemingly corny dialogue in the trailer, it looks like Malick is being incredibly ambitious this time around. Even the trailer moved me. This film and Shame by Steve McQueen are the only things I even care about for 2011.

As for Days of Heaven, Ebert wrote something nice about the film:

Malick's films have done that for me too.

I would also argue that a cursory knowledge of philosophy enhances his work substantially, Malick comes from an impressive academic background in that regard, and seeing his work through that lens allows for a greater understanding of what hes getting at, whether or not it resonates with you. I am not an accomplished scholar, but what little I have works in my favor when seeing his films.

That being said, even if you don't think his work is any good (I like it all except Badlands), there is something going on behind his gorgeous imagery, but not everyone is going to be moved by it or care and its not hard to see why. Despite the big name actors in Tree of Life, I don't doubt that it will be just as obtuse as his other output.

But yeah, the narration in Days of Heaven is grating, to say the least.

Hi all, long time film fan of the classics and modern and after a big upgrade to my electronic equipment this holiday season I took the plunge and bought my first Criterion films. A couple questions I need help from the 'pros' on here for.

1. My local box store seems to have 3 price points on the Criterion films - 1/3 is priced at $26, 1/3 at $37 and 1/3 at $43. Any explanation for this? or is it likely just based on release date/availability?

2. After reading through many of the posts on here and other sites I purchased Modern Times and Thin Red Line as my 1st 2 films. I'm a big fan of the silent films and war movies so these seemed like a couple of logical choices.

I need some advice for future purchases - can you recommend a couple more that are 'must have' - really want to find a couple that I literally will go 'WOW' watching due to the visuals, audio and of course storyline. I was thinking Paths of Glory and/or Seventh Seal. But being a relative newbie to Criterion I thought I'd ask the pros for help. Basically what are the 1 or 2 you wouldn't give up or would recommend the most.

Seven Samurai is probably the easiest recommendation based on my experiences. Not necessarily my favorite, but the packaging is lovely, the transfer is great, and the film is just downright accessible and enjoyable for almost everyone.

The Seventh Seal is a great package, but the film tends to be hit or miss, so rent it. Technically superb and the supplements are great, but none of that matters if you don't enjoy the movie.

Paths of Glory is an excellent choice. A lot of people call it an anti-war movie but I don't really see it that way. If anything, it's more anti-elites (not an uncommon Kubrick theme, actually).

You're not going to pull it out to demo your video or audio gear but the transfer is absolutely excellent. Not 'excellent given the age of the source'...just plain excellent.

There were a lot of points where either the writing or the acting could have veered from drama to melodrama but it never happens. Kirk Douglas in particular had a lot of opportunities to ham it up but he gives a fantastic performance.

Revanche
The Night of the Hunter
Seven Samurai
Bigger Than Life
Paris, Texas
Paths of Glory

Those are probably my favorites that I own personally.

You cannot go wrong with The 400 Blows being one of your first Criterion purchases. It's just so amazing. That or Seven Samurai. One of the more underrated Criterion works is also Revanche. That film needs more love, because it's an incredible film. Check that one out too.

I've never heard of the "great directors" saying anything about or being compared to any of those films...so it's hard to say they are amongst "THE MOST" influential. The only movies I've heard about are Easy Rider and 400 Blows.

AQ: 3,5 (OK) Modern Times, which I have watched halfway through last night looks great. Contrast is pitch perfect, detail is pleasing, grain acceptable and natural looking, and I only noticed a few hairs in some scenes. I hope it looks this good all the way to the end! I am very fond of the packaging of Seven Samurai. It looks fantastic to say the least, and two BDs makes it only sweeter. Very nice indeed!

Not necessarily my favorite, but the packaging is lovely, the transfer is great, and the film is just downright accessible and enjoyable for almost everyone. The Seventh Seal is a great package, but the film tends to be hit or miss, so rent it. Technically superb and the supplements are great, but none of that matters if you don't enjoy the movie.

A lot of people call it an anti-war movie but I don't really see it that way. If anything, it's more anti-elites (not an uncommon Kubrick theme, actually). You're not going to pull it out to demo your video or audio gear but the transfer is absolutely excellent. Not 'excellent given the age of the source'...just plain excellent. There were a lot of points where either the writing or the acting could have veered from drama to melodrama but it never happens. Kirk Douglas in particular had a lot of opportunities to ham it up but he gives a fantastic performance.
